WASHINGTON Accusing politicians of "pounding their chests" on immigration for short-term political gain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the tone of the debate had been "hurtful" to him and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.
Bush, the younger brother of President Bush, reserved some of his sharpest criticism for conservatives in his own Republican Party, calling it "just plain wrong" to charge illegal immigrants with a felony, as a provision passed by the Republican-led House would do. He also opposed "penalizing the children of illegal immigrants" by denying them U.S. citizenship, an idea backed by some conservatives but not included in the legislation.
"My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad," the Florida governor wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times.

I have four Bush Xmas cards. I have them framed.
Jeb turned tail a year ago and upon seeing his yellow stripe, I decided no more Bushes.
Yeah, traitor may be a little strong but if we are overrun by illegals due to lack of border security and a mass flood of more illegals creates a homeland crisis, a case could be made that somebody's violated their oath to defend the US of A.
I see from your profile page that you are an atheist. Florida has a big organization for atheists who have a working relationship with the ACLU. Florida's a real mess.
Jeb himself has used the word "devious" to describe a plan of his to work around a class size amendment. I think it was devious of him to seek out the LA Times when there are plenty of liberal papers right here in Florida.
Devious, in his own words.
Jeb using his wife in the article is really despicable. Is there no one the Bushes won't exploit for political gain? Poor Columba. She doesn't like to be in the spotlight.
I agree. Sick of them all and they don't speak for me at all. I mute the sound for both dems and rino pubbies now. I used to just mute the sound for leftist dems.
What to do about left wing gop? They're ruining the party and the country.
Kerry is a real cousin of the Bushes and the Bushes say Bubba is their brother. That's it for me.
I used to like my Governor (Jeb Bush). I knew, back in the primaries of 2000, that I didn't like "W" based on my dislike for his tax-raising, RINO dad. Now I know that I don't like the whole RINO family.
They can go back to their homeland and fix Mexico from within. Don't turn the U.S. into Mexico! I don't speak Spanish and have no plans to learn Spanish unless I am forced to down the road.
I've already been called a racist by the current administration just because I'm against illegal immigration and want a secure border! Stop the spreading freedom around the world b.s., stay the course in Iraq and then cut it out, mr. president. Further, please tell your baby brother that there are plenty of fine (lol)papers in Florida and that Jeb didn't have to seek out the LA Times while using his wife to get sympathy from the Hispanic community. Jeb's not as mighty or powerful as he thinks he is.
Oh, that probably hurt his feelings.
Any conservative who has not been called a racist these days is just too timid to open his mouth and speak the truth!
Wear it as a badge of honor.
So you are a proponent of censorship? What words are you fond of?
No, no. Jeb's helping Sen. Nelson behind the scenes against Katherine Harris. (I swear he is). Don't not help Katherine. www.electharris.org. The Bushes are faux-life. Katherine's pro-life.
This thread is so backbreaking. As an American, I just might not want to be on this thread. Can I outsource?
Jeb's a mama's boy. He's not going to occupy the White House because when the going gets tough, he runs to mama.

You post like you are an attorney. This is not a trial and there are enough freepers here who know how to read between the lines w/President Bush. It was clear that he's referring to the Minuteman just like it is clear now that if our opinions differ from the administrations, we are racists. They keep slammin' their own constitutents, middle America!
