WASHINGTON — Accusing politicians of "pounding their chests" on immigration for short-term political gain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the tone of the debate had been "hurtful" to him and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.

Bush, the younger brother of President Bush, reserved some of his sharpest criticism for conservatives in his own Republican Party, calling it "just plain wrong" to charge illegal immigrants with a felony, as a provision passed by the Republican-led House would do. He also opposed "penalizing the children of illegal immigrants" by denying them U.S. citizenship, an idea backed by some conservatives but not included in the legislation.

"My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad," the Florida governor wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times.

It's not looking good for anybody but invading criminals, i.e.; those looking to prosper illegally -and- terrorists that are waltzing into America and hiding in mosques and big rig/flight training schools.

this is not an immigration debate. it's an ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION debate. I wish people would get that straight. no one is opposed to legal immigration.

Congratulations - you have mastered the tar baby school of internet debate.

Now go try and hug someone else in your sticky embrace, which leaves them trying to deal with your nonsense at the expense of actually debating the issue at hand.

I don't believe you even like yourself, to be honest.

But, anyone that needs to scurry off to Admin to try and clear Partiots out of the discussion, they aren't much of a person to begin with.

Previous administrations and Congresses, of both major Parties, as well as their appointed Judges, who began and perpetuated the process of ignoring well-established immigration laws and processes in America bear full responsibility for the serious and threatening situation we now face. It is time that the current leadership of both of the guilty Parties step up to the plate and, by their prompt action, demonstrate that America is, indeed, a nation of "laws," and that citizenship requires adherence to that principle.

Well-stated. The 11 to 20 million illegal aliens in this country did not arrive overnight. It all stems back to 1965. Congress replaced the national origins system with a preference system designed to unite immigrant families and attract skilled immigrants to the United States. This change to national policy responded to changes in the sources of immigration since 1924. The majority of applicants for immigration visas now come from Asia and Latin America rather than Europe.

We are living with the consequences of failed leadership. Now we are told that the number of illegal immigrants is too large to deport and must now "solve" the problem by making them legal after the fact. In the meantime the number of illegals continue to grow. It is like someone killing his parents and asking mercy from the court because he is an orphan.

I agree with your points, and wish to add that I can think of no time in our history that we ever had a "viable system to verify new hires' work eligibility".

Historically, immigration has always been a messy business. I just found a Denver Post article on the Irish immigration on the bottom of the sidebar, and read it with great interest.

Bottom line, I think that the conditions set forth in the guest worker plan would separate the wheat from the chaff.
All those that wish to be Americans can follow the guidelines, and those that don't (probably 1/4?) would make it much easier to identify and target the no goods. Anyone who is illegal and in prison here should, of course, be put right out. The guest worker program also has a "one strike " provision that would, IMHO, really help establish some much needed law and order within the immigrant communities.

Clarence, I never mentioned "treason" or the "Constitution". The definition I related to was the dictionary definition of traitor........."one who betrays a cause".

There is nothing to "admit to" as I never discussed that. I only referred to the "conservative cause" and the betrayal of that conservative cause, thus a traitor to the conservative cause. (The cause that FR is all about).

"no one is opposed to legal immigration.

Oh boy, are you going to be surprised... You haven't read through all the posts yet ;)

Why, there are tens of thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, oh, maybe 8 or 9, against it.

illegal do jobs americans won't.

now up to two-thirds of all fugitive felony warrants in Los Angeles county(17,000) are for illegal aliens.

As it turns out, Americans are unwilling to commit these felonies...

There goes any political future for Jeb as far as I'm concerned--including replacing Katherine Harris in the Senate race.
