WASHINGTON Accusing politicians of "pounding their chests" on immigration for short-term political gain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the tone of the debate had been "hurtful" to him and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.
Bush, the younger brother of President Bush, reserved some of his sharpest criticism for conservatives in his own Republican Party, calling it "just plain wrong" to charge illegal immigrants with a felony, as a provision passed by the Republican-led House would do. He also opposed "penalizing the children of illegal immigrants" by denying them U.S. citizenship, an idea backed by some conservatives but not included in the legislation.
"My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad," the Florida governor wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times.

I suppose if that's the closest you get to having someone admit you're correct, then you hang onto that! :)

Something we can finally agree on: "it is not possible for us to absorb every human being on this planet" - let me know if anyone has proposed that.
Of course you are.
Temporarily stopping a program that is broken is not the same as being against it entirely.

They don't hate each other - professional politicians always protect each other, and there's a taxpayer tit for each gaggle of parasites, so they don't even have to share.
I didn't mean "correct" about the entire issue - I meant "correct" about a few people wanting to stop LEGAL immigration as well - one brick at a time ; )
Agreed. Funny, though, how "temporary" government actions linger for so long . . .
You never did answer if you wanted all LEGAL stopped though - why is that?
Ok, so what exactly is your point in finding a few people who agree that all immigration should be stopped?
susie
You mean like temporary workers?

"So your answer to the problem is to just wait until we loose?"
No, of course that is not my answer. The answer is to seal our Northern and Southern borders, and to enforce them. Force everyone entering the USA to go through one of our official border crossings and present the papers required to enter the USA.
Dealing with those already here through deportation is simply not going to work. It's not going to happen. It's impossible, especially since nobody is required to present identification in this country without good cause.
Reagan and Congress provided amnesty to 4 million. Bush and Congress is about to provide it to 12 million. Reagan did nothing to secure the borders against additional illegals. Will Bush and the current Congress? I certainly hope so, although I am not convinced.
Because due to an absolute refusal to enforce the standing laws the nation has been overwhelmed by illegal aliens that not only refuse to assimilate but want to take over.
Until you get rid of those who shouldn't be here and assimilate those who are here legally the opportunity for those from countries who have exploited our lack enforcement to come here should be put on hold, period.
We should not allow foreign countries to dictate our immigration process to us.
It's time to end the abiguity.
This is a recent letter I sent to my Senator.
Senator Ensign,
Regarding a border fence. I think this is something that we must have in place as soon as possible. One doesn't start mopping the floors until the water leak has been repaired or the water shut off.
I believe that if we had a program that harshly hits the employers who hire illegals we could accomplish the self removal in 50 months without too much ruckus. Pass a Bill that required the employers, one state at a time, to verify the SSI numbers of their employees. We must verify that these employees are paying taxes. Any problem and the employee has 30 days to bring in alternate proof that they were not attempting fraud.
Start in the Northeast. state#1 Maine, state#2 New Hampshire, state#3 Vermont and state#4 Mass., should be the first four states in the numerical order. Then state#5 RI., state#6 NY., state#7 CT., and state#8 NJ., in the numerical order.
Do you understand what I am proposing and what the effect would be? The illegal employees would rapidly see what is coming. Knowing that they couldn't produce verifiable tax identification they would start selling their belongings and shipping the items that they wished to retain back to their home countries.
The illegals from South America and Mexico would start moving West as their jobs disappeared on their own. As new jobs became impossible to attain they would see that Canada, Russia, Mexico or wherever their foreign homeland is should become their destination for employment.
Employers who couldn't find American workers could appeal to the proper Agency for a 24 month Guest Worker permit for specific named employees. This identification would be given to the employee at our border entry station as they apply for an Entry Card and permit this employee to work for just the one employer. Perhaps require the employer to send in verification that the employee is still needed and that he is will be working on site.
Once we have this system in place, then we could have the local police and ICE agents collect the rest of the illegals and deport them city by city across the United States. As each state comes up for it's 'clean up' I would favor a $10,000 fine for hiring a person in that state who isn't a US citizen or someone who doesn't have a Guest Worker identification card. That state should expel all students who aren't citizens, here on student visas or the children of authorized workers also.
We cannot afford to pay the costs of these people if they are not going to learn to speak English and assimilate into our communities. Their costs are much higher than their contributions. We could have a public award system for anyone patriotically turning in the names of unauthorized immigrants who are their neighbors. Perhaps have a portion of the money go to the local hospitals, police forces or school systems
Senator, I thank you for taking the time to read my ideas.
Sincerely,
You did, up two posts in #320.
I don't feel compelled to oblige trolls.
But for real FReepers, my views are well-known.
Pretty much aligned with Dr. Keyes:
The globalist gene appears to be very strong in the Bush family.
Ole' Jeb is just repeating the family mantra here.
I see that you advertise yourself in your tagline as "godless athiest."
I respect freedom of conscience, but I find your gratuitous and aggressive advertising of an opinion guranteed to offend many posters here, to be extremely offensive. That is the only one of my thoughts which I care to share with you MineralMan (godless athiest). It has been nice getting to know you. Good luch in all your future endeavors.
The battle between Mexican Americans and illegals who think America is their land isn't going to end soon.
To counter those who claim "Nobody is against LEGAL immigration." I think I've stated that several times now.
Yes, but the Bracero program lasted from 1942 until 1964, and those workers did return to Mexico. The current proposal is for less years than that.
