WASHINGTON Accusing politicians of "pounding their chests" on immigration for short-term political gain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the tone of the debate had been "hurtful" to him and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.
Bush, the younger brother of President Bush, reserved some of his sharpest criticism for conservatives in his own Republican Party, calling it "just plain wrong" to charge illegal immigrants with a felony, as a provision passed by the Republican-led House would do. He also opposed "penalizing the children of illegal immigrants" by denying them U.S. citizenship, an idea backed by some conservatives but not included in the legislation.
"My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad," the Florida governor wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times.

We will have to respectfully disagree.
You are STILL wrong. No "qualifing words" are needed. The dictionary defintion is clear. In no way does "traitor" equate to "treason". Jeb, George and Republicans in Congress have been traitors to the conservative cause of law and order and limited government. You are wrong and your spin falls flat since you deny dictionary definititions.
"In the same vein, flinging "Bushbot" at the other side causes the same problem. And Mineral Man is correct that casually using the term "treason" does the same."
Not to be too technical, the word I objected to was "traitor." I consider it tantamount to an accusation of treason, but that wasn't the word posters were using on this thread.
I don't like "Bushbot," either. I don't like "Limbot," either. All of those words, like "traitor," are imprecise and are just generic insults...used by those who do not have the capacity to argue their case effectively and accurately.
Using such shortcut labels is the mark of a weak argument, in my opinion.
Illegal aliens who take American jobs, use government programs, and/or commit crimes are hurtful.
"The dictionary defintion is clear. In no way does "traitor" equate to "treason". "
I believe it was you who posted the dictionary definition, and it clearly included a clause tying the word to "treason." In fact it said something like "especially with regard to treason."
To say that it "in no way" equates to treason is simply incorrect.
Agreed. Enforcement against employers has sunk to nearly zero under this administration.
Amnesty is only allowed in the most extreme cases of illegals who came here longer than 5 years ago and have established residency/family status. They should be required to pay any back taxes, or some portion of it.
So, you want to reward those who have broken the law the longest with precious American citizenship? That's illogical nonsense.
Any new illegals should be caught and deported and registered. If they repeat again, they then should be given a prison sentence and later deported. The Mexican government should be fined for repeat offenders.
We were promised this kind of enforcement in '86. Nothing happened. Why should we believe that it will be any better with this crop of amnesty-providers?
Illegals bring 55 billion $ per year into Mexico's economy...
Who cares? That's oil-rich Mexico's problem.
That 'miniscule slice' just happens to include several million of the most active and knowledgable conservatives in the GOP, sinkspur.
Creates quite a dilemma for folks like you, doesn't it...
Here is the definition you posted of the word "Traitor:"
Helping the Mexican economy grow would be part of the overall solution I think - I'm hoping the next Mexican President finally gets tough on his country's economy, corruption, etc. On our side of the border, we need to work on the demand side of the equation better. Higher levels of legal immigration and especially to make the process easier for qualified immigrants (i.e., the kind of people who aren't categorically prohibited from entering the country) would reduce the amount of needed enforcement by reducing the incentives to illegal immigration. Perhaps we could allow legal immigration at a higher cost to those who are unwilling to wait (I'd rather have them paying the U.S. Treasury than coyotes), so that more enforcement resources can be more effectively allocated where needed. I never said we should do away with all immigration laws or enforcement - I just think a wall without the manpower to guard it is a waste - better those monies be spent at catching terrorists.
Sorry you feel that way - I would never use a logical fallacy such as that.
The fact that great Americans like Alan Keyes are not welcome by the Republican 'elitists' is reason enough to support them from now on AFAIC. I guess RINOs are good for one thing, anyway. That being no more voting for a loser with an "R" who can beat another BIGGER LOSER with a "D", but rather vote for a winner and pray he can win.
They ARE all "immigrants" - see dictionary.
I am fine with raising ALL levels of legal immigration.
It's not "spamming" when I am simply responding to every person when THEY bring up: "No one is against legal immigration", but thanks for admitting I am correct : )
I don't know if you made it to the later parts of this thread, but if you're not here yet, the thread could use some graphics/links of those who were being "hurtful".
That word makes me want to puke.
Globalist crap does too.
I would love to see Mexico change. I think what would spur that on is a sudden influx of Mexican nationals who have lived in the US and have seen what life can be like, but who no longer have the choice of coming here in massive numbers. One thing I know is that it is not possible for us to absorb every human being on this planet who wants to come. Some of them are going to have to stay home and improve their own countries.
susie
bushdolebushdolebushdolebushdole - end it, Lord!
If they don't have a "problem" with legal immigrants, then why do they want it stopped, even temporarily? I thought the GOP didn't believe in "quotas"?
