Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net
The Conservative Voice ^ | Feb 11, 2005 | by William Gheen, President, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC

Posted on 02/11/2005 10:55:36 AM PST by Jim Robinson

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

JIm, I agree to disagree with many, in this forum. I for one do not believe in an open border policy. But I do believe that people who want to come into the Country, through proper legal documnetation, who will perform as Americans, should be allowed to have that chance.

The President, in my opinion has not backed undocumented,
aliens, coming into the Country at any time. He has stated that they should be identified, and documented, and allowed in.

I would like someone to show me where George W. has said let them in without any documentation.

Ops4 God Bless America!

Hey, if President Bush can be accused of pandering to voters then unionized Federal government employees can be seen as shilling for their own job security.

Shop owners defending their property during the LA riots: I said they where acting out as Vigilantes. You corrected me with:
“Self-defense isn't vigilantism.”

My mistake, you are correct.

And the banning of tortilla production helps us remain strong and resolute how exactly?

The fact that this thread (and I've read most of it) survived is somewhat amazing.

Self regulation is to be encouraged. Especially if one wishes to remain with the vast majority and not drift toward the fringes.

Preserving "our culture" via race based immigration quotas......

Not race-based, but culture-based. If we continue to allow our nation to be flooded with third-worlders (at the current rate) then it'll eventually take on the character of their hellholes of origin. And as opposed to immigrants from nations whose culture is similar to our own, a fat majority of these third-worlders have little intention of assimilating and becoming "Americanized" .....especially the ones who believe that the Southwest portion of the U.S. is theirs.

Luis is an immigration lawyer and Cuban American. His conservatism is not the same as most Cubans I know but whatever.

He's been here a long time and can be genial. I think he thinks that anyone who doesn't want the US to become Norte Mexico must hate Cubans too.

I sure don't...wish we had more Cubans here. I've known plenty....who fought in Vietnam and as proxies in the Congo and Angola.

Personal bias clouds perspective around here on this issue. I admit mine...would that others would too. Quite a few of the anti-anti-immigration crowd here are minorities as well and have an axe to grind.

Funny..though....I don't think of Luis as a minority...even though he can get MBE and other program set asides even in Dade county where he would be a majority.

That's America today.

Hi Luis!

"Maybe you want race based quotas so that Caucasians remain the 70% majority." I want to preserve our sovereignty and American culture.

A simple YES, would do. No need to wimp out with "I want to preserve our sovereignty and American culture." You know what that means, I know what that means. Everyone else knows what that means.

Yea.
Why should we not expect every citizen be able to read it?

The sacrifices of past American patriots is NEVER acknowledged by your ilk.

Why is that?

Whew starting on the sauce early today.

BTW, there was a thread on FR where a soldier who entered the US illegally, who was on his way to citizenship, joined the Service and gave his life for freedom in Iraq.

JMO, you and your "ilk" would be sneering at him as a "criminal illegal".

I don't know if you've seen self-defense referred to as vigilantism in news articles, but I have. Can't provide a link, as I'm just going from memory, but I've read more than one account of a sheriff or a police spokesman referring to an event where a homeowner shot an intruder as "vigilantism". Ugh. So, I tend to get particular about the usage of the word.

Just because the sum of all Medal of Honors issued to the loudmouthed anti-immigrants can't begin to compare to the accolades afforded to immigrant American heroes is no reason to discount their jealousy or angst over tortillas being sold in stores.

In truth, sadly, there are a good number of Americans who can't read it.

NEA and the one worlders have done their jobs well.

Yea. Why should we not expect every citizen be able to read it(the Constitution)?

Gee maybe you should try to get white liberals in Boston to try to read it also.

You know the people who think the Constitution entitles abortion and homosexual marriage, something Hispanic immigrants to the US are not for and wouldn't "read" in the Constitution.
