Actor Danny Masterson (primarily known as Hyde on "That 70s Show") has been convicted of rape. Specifically, he was convicted of raping adult women in his home, women who were in their 20s at the time. And he has now been sentenced for it. Thirty years to life. That's a heck of a sentence. The allegations surfaced in 2017 and 2018. The crimes – the alleged rapes, which he has completely denied - took place between 2001 and 2003. We shouldn’t want to take his side. He's a Scientologist - a particularly offensive cult that has a huge amount of...

According to local outlets in Tampa, Florida, process servers have attempted on nearly 30 occasions to deliver court papers at 10 different church properties. The drops occurred between May and August and the servers were all turned away by security guards, including at the Hacienda Gardens facility where former members say he lives. Court papers were also delivered to Scientology properties but all attempts resulted in unsigned returned receipts. Some were refused at the location. 'For years,...

Artist's impression of the catastrophe. (Katrina Kenny © 2022, author provided) Some 252 million years ago the world was going through a tumultuous period of rapid global warming. To understand what caused it, scientists have looked to one particular event in which a volcanic eruption in what is now Siberia spewed huge volumes of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. However, there is evidence the climate was already changing before this. Sea surface temperatures had increased by more than 6-8 ℃ in the hundreds of thousands of years leading up to the Siberian outpouring. Temperatures increased again after it, so much...

he Church of Scientology has firmly made Clearwater, Florida its home in the blink of an eye - shelling out $103million to sweep up 101 acres of the city's waterfront downtown area over the course of three years. In just three years, starting with a frantic land grab in January 2017, Scientology doubled its footprint in the city. Following a fallout with the City Council, Scientologists started to buy...

In the third lawsuit filed against the Church of Scientology and its leader, David Miscavige, in three months, a 25-year-old woman alleges she was repeatedly sexually assaulted as a child in Scientology’s care, including at the church’s Clearwater Academy. On top of the abuse, the lawsuit explains how church officials allegedly knew it was occurring and did nothing to stop it or alert law enforcement, actions rooted in policy written by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. When the woman spoke of her alleged abuse after leaving Scientology in 2018, the church deployed a campaign of harassment against her, a tactic...

I’m nominating Leah Remini for this year’s John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. Let me tell you why. For as long as I can remember I have been obsessed with the “religion” of Scientology. As a child I was a big fan of L. Ron Hubbard’s science fiction writing. My mom used to get me a subscription to Isaac Asimov’s monthly sci-fi publication and often there were short stories from Hubbard. One day I mistakenly checked out his Scientology handbook “Dianetics” and while I was grossly disappointed to discover it was not the sci-fi romp I’d hoped for, it...

In real life, Barry Seal was a TWA pilot fired in 1972 after being charged with smuggling plastic explosives into Mexico. In the movie, Barry Seal is a too-cool-for-school iconoclast who quits TWA, just up and walks away from a passenger plane on the tarmac, because he speaks for the everyman who can no longer stand the rote boredom and suffocating conformity of corporate life. In real life, Barry Seal flew tons of cocaine into America for various drug lords, including Pablo Escobar. It was only after he was busted that he began working for the DEA as an informant....

Forget the American electorate. Donald Trump’s biggest fan may be a British businessman who likes to play the odds. John Mappin, a media investor who owns Camelot Castle in Cornwall, has placed more than 15 wagers, totaling more than 2,000 pounds ($3,100), that Trump will secure the Republican presidential nomination, if not win the presidential election outright. Depending on the type of bet (nomination or presidential victory) — and the odds at the time it was placed — the payoffs range from 7-to-1 to more than 30-to-1. If Trump indeed becomes president and Mappin wins every bet he’s made, he...

Rupert Murdoch handed over 21st Century Fox, the conglomerate behind Fox News, to sons James and Lachlan July 1, 2015. James is now CEO and Lachlan executive co-chairman. Last year Murdoch elevated his sons to prominent positions, James to co-COO and Lachlan to non-executive co-chairman, but the turnover of the conglomerate came sooner than expected. For 15 years, Roger Ailes has enjoyed near total autonomy as head of Fox News, but Ailes’ sovereign rule ended abruptly with the move. A 21st Century Fox spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter from now on, “Roger will report to Lachlan and James.” “For Ailes,...

Governor Sarah Palin paid a quiet visit to the good folks at One America News Network this week.   One America News Network is headquartered in San Diego. This conservative alternative to Fox News has been slowly gaining ground from Fox News viewers.   The first hint of Governor Palin’s visit was innocuous enough. In the wake of the explosive HBO documentary “Going Clear,” John Travolta has come to Scientology’s defense. The 61-year-old made it clear he has no plans to see the doc, which alleges the church has physically abused and blackmailed some of its members, among other questionable acts. “No I haven’t and I don’t really care to,” Travolta told the Tampa Bay Times when asked if he’ll see the film. He’s been a member of the church for more than 40 years and claims his experiences have been nothing but amazing. “I haven’t experienced anything that the hearsay has (claimed), so...

Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren thinks MSNBC's liberal host Rachel Maddow would be a fine fit to replace Brian Williams as anchor of NBC's "Nightly News." "How about a woman?" wrote Van Susteren on her Gretawire blog Wednesday. "My suggestion: Rachel Maddow. Whether you agree with her or not, she will stir things up and provoke a debate. She is also the right price — she is already on the payroll!" Van Susteren's suggestion comes in light of news that Brian Williams has been suspended for six months as anchor and managing editor of NBC's "Nightly News." Van Susteren...
