Dogs in Moscow are ubiquitous, whether they are homeless or housebroken. Those who live on the streets can be found on almost every corner looking for food; those who have owners, like this dachshund near a pond in the Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo region of northern Moscow, have a more leisurely lifestyle.

Biologically speaking, many animals besides dogs bark, according to Kathryn Lord at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, but the evolutionary biologist also says domestic dogs vocalize in this way much more than birds, deer, monkeys and other wild animals that use barks. The reason is related to dogs 10,000-year history of hanging around human food refuse dumps, she suggests.....she and colleagues say barking is the auditory signal associated with an evolved behavior known as mobbing, a cooperative anti-predator response usually initiated by one individual who notices an approaching intruder. A dog barks because she feels an internal conflict an urge...

Master buys dog training software. Dog finds training software. Dog decides he needs no bloody training. Dog acts accordingly, destroys it, then goes after master and bites his or her ass.I really don't know if this photo is staged or not. And quite frankly, I don't care, because knowing—and loving—dogs, this is how things should be. At least, if we are talking about Jones here. Screw training, lips be damned. [Dark Roasted Blend]

November 26, 2008 Categories: Antics No "girly" dog for the Obamas Barbara Walters interviewed the Obamas, due to air tonight, and of course the topics of doggies came up. She, along with millions of Americans, actually sent Michelle Obama a picture of her beloved Havanese dog, Cha Cha Cha. (We're not kidding.) Here's the back and forth between Obama and Bawbwa: Obama: "Cha Cha?" Bawbwa: "It's short for Cha Cha Cha." O: "What is a Havanese?" B: "It's like a little terrier and they're non-allergenic and they're the sweetest dogs.." O: [Face suddenly changes.] "It's like a little yappy dog?"...

In August of 2007 luxury hotelier Leona Helmsley passed away. Her will revealed that her beloved pooch Trouble would receive a $12 million trust fund. The heiress left two of her grandchildren with nothing. The New York Post is reporting that a judge in the New York court system has altered the inheritance and now the white Maltese will have to somehow survive on a mere $2 million. The other $10 million is being given to charity. Oh, apparently the two grandkids, initially left out of the will, have fallen back into favor, at least with the courts. They will...

Dog, cat honored for saving masters By RICHARD PYLE, Associated Press Writer 13 minutes ago NEW YORK - When Debbie Parkhurst choked on a piece of apple at her Maryland home, her dog jumped in, landing hard on her chest and forcing the morsel to pop out of her throat. When the Keesling family of Indiana was about to be overcome by carbon monoxide, their cat clawed at wife Cathy's hair until she woke up and called for help. For their nick-of-time acts, Toby, a 2 1/2-year-old golden retriever, and Winnie, a gray-eyed American shorthair, were named Dog and Cat...

BENEDICT XVIANGELUSCastel GandolfoSunday, 20 August 2006 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today, the calendar mentions among the day's saints Bernard of Clairvaux, a great Doctor of the Church who lived between the 11th and 12th centuries (1091-1153). His example and teachings are proving more useful than ever, even in our time. Having withdrawn from the world after a period of intense inner travail, he was elected abbot of the Cistercian Monastery of Clairvaux at age 25, remaining its guide for 38 years until his death. His dedication to silence and contemplation did not prevent him from carrying out intense apostolic activity. He...

Tony Snow By Bill O'Reilly for BillOReilly.comThursday, Mar 29, 2007 My friend Tony Snow is once again fighting for his life, his cancer having returned. You may remember the White House press secretary underwent six months of chemotherapy after cancer was found in his colon two years ago. His mother died of cancer and Tony was very aggressive in treating his condition. Now cancer lesions have spread to his liver and Tony Snow is once again facing a painful struggle to defeat the disease. But if anyone can beat the beast down, it's Snow. He is a courageous guy....

While global warming is nothing to laugh at, an Australian company is providing some comic relief, selling carbon credits for flatulent pets and people. So-called carbon emissions, such as carbon dioxide and methane, are greenhouse gases that are thought to be key factors in climate change. These emissions can be offset by purchasing carbon credits, which may be used to fund environmental programs. For 35 Australian dollars (about 27 U.S. dollars), customers of Sydney-based Easy Being Green can offset a year's worth of carbon emissions linked to their dogs, from trips to the vet to, yes, breaking wind. Making your...

Antiwar protester Cindy Sheehan was arrested in December 2006 outside President George W. Bush’s Texas home for allegedly blocking the road leading to the Crawford ranch. Sheehan, 49, and four other protesters were busted after refusing police requests to move. The group was booked into the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office jail, where the below mug shot of Sheehan was taken. The protesters were each charged with obstructing a highway, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum of six months in prison and a $2000 fine.

Apparently, Kevin Federline wasn't the only warm-blooded being Britney Spears ousted from her home this year. Once the proud owner of pampered pooches Bit-Bit, Lacy and Lucky, Spears ended the year dog-less, a feat that earned her the title of World's Worst Celebrity Dog Owner in an online poll of readers of Hollywood Dog and New York Dog magazines. "Britney was the overwhelming choice," editor Hilary O'Hagan said in a statement. "She once had three Chihuahuas and never left home without at least one of them on her arm. As soon as she met K-Fed and had kids, they disappeared."...

Breakfast food company Kellogg's has come under fire from animal lovers furious about a television advert showing a man riding a dog like a horse. Nearly 100 complaints have been made against the new Crunchy Nut Cornflakes advert, which shows a very small man finishing work and riding home on the back of an Irish Wolfhound. Dog lovers say the behaviour in the scene is cruel and could be copied by children. However, no action is to be taken by the Advertising Standards Authority, which has dismissed the complaints. It says viewers would be able to spot that the scenes...

SNIP.... MINOR EDITINGMAC Cosmetics has censored Sandra Bernhard for bashing the GOP. The cosmetics giant, owned by Estée Lauder, got hundreds of complaints after it posted an online ad this week for its Plushglass lip gloss in which the balloon-lipped comic does some free-form ranting, including a riff about an "intimidated, frightened, right-wing Republican thin-lipped bitch." But Mac oddly didn't cut a line in which Bernhard cheekily discusses the bodily fluids of a horny barnyard bird.

A US dog has won an award for saving her owner's life by dialling a phone number that alerted emergency services to her owner's diabetic seizure. Belle the beagle triggered a call to an ambulance crew by biting on her owner, Kevin Weaver's, mobile phone. The dog was trained to detect potential diabetic attacks by licking and sniffing Mr Weaver's nose to check his blood sugar levels and pawing him. Belle resorted to dialling for help when Mr Weaver fell unconscious. The dog used her teeth to press the number nine key, which the phone was programmed to interpret...

Doctors Give Tony Snow The Go-Ahead The final part of Josh Bolten's five-point White House "recovery plan" involves courting the press, the latest issue of Time Magazine says. "...He believes the White House can work more astutely with journalists to make its case to the public, and he recognizes that the President has paid a price for the inclination of some on his staff to treat them dismissively or high-handedly. His first move, working with counselor Dan Bartlett, was to offer the press secretary job to Tony Snow." Mike Allen reports that Snow's "doctors have approved the possibility of his...

This historic advancement in Chinese animal welfare also saw the call for an outright ban on the century’s old practice of dog and cat eating. Millions of dogs and cats...
