Issac Sims left Iraq alive, but not unscathed. The lingering effects of a serious head injury and the emotional trauma wrought by the sights and sounds of war never left him. On Sunday, with the demons of untreated post-traumatic stress disorder roiling his mind, Sims grabbed a rifle and started firing off shots in and outside his family’s modest home on Kansas City’s East Side. ******* Officers summoned tactical teams to surround the area. After a standoff of about five hours, police said, Sims emerged and pointed the rifle at officers. They fired. And Sims was dead at the age...

While it is just a tragic anecdote, the latest story surrounding the chronic and too often fatal inefficiency of Veterans Affairs hospitals is illustrative of a much larger problem.

“A veteran who collapsed in an Albuquerque Veteran Affairs hospital cafeteria, 500 yards from the emergency room, died after waiting 30 minutes for an ambulance,” the Associated Press reported on Thursday. “Officials at the hospital Thursday confirmed it took a half an hour for the ambulance to be dispatched and take the man from one building to the other, which is about a five minute walk.”

The Stars and Stripes are at the center of controversy. At least at Larry Murphree’s home. “I want it to go away. It’s such a minor little thing and they keep coming after me,” he explained. “They” is Murphree’s homeowner’s association. He’s lived in the Sweetwater community for years, and been at odds with the HOA for more than two. All over a flag. The veteran decided to put one in his flower pot, and has been fined as a result. “They just sent me a letter that says I owe them around $8,000 and they put a foreclosure lien...

Two months ago came the bizarre phone call that changed everything. "My mom called me up and said ‘Hey, you're dead.' I said ‘No, I'm not,'" Morris said. The VA sent his parents a condolence letter.

SIERRA VISTA — For more than 100 years Elks lodges throughout the country have been holding special ceremonies to honor Flag Day. It began with a lodge in Texas in 1908 said Shirley Dixon, the exalted ruler of SierraVista Elks Lodge 2065. Saturday the special ceremony was held outside, at the lodge’s ramada area, attended by more than 150 people. Sitting in the audience were six World War II veterans, as special guests, as the 70th anniversary of the end of that war closes happens in 2015 — May when Germany surrendered and September when Japan signed its surrender documents....

As I see it, and saw it, serving my 4 years in the US Navy Submarine Service on the USS Grenadier (SS-525) and the USS George C. Bancroft (SSBN -643) as a TM 3 (MT) was a privilege. I owed my country my time & energy for providing me with the privilege of living in the greatest nation ever to arise on the face of the Earth. I'm not owed anything. Thank you America, for letting me serve.

A veteran died of a stroke after Veterans Affairs police beat him because he refused to wait any longer for treatment at a VA hospital in California. Now his widow is suing the government over the brutality that led to his death. Jonathan Montano had been at the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Loma Linda, Calif. for four hours with a shunt (a needle apparatus) in his arm, awaiting dialysis. Tired of biding his time, he decided to head to a different VA hospital in Long Beach, and asked his wife Norma to get the car. But instead of...

"Many people have met him," said Judy Avila, a friend and author of Nez's memoir. "When you meet him, you're charmed by him." He was the last living member of the group. "There were a lot of people and naysayers who said, 'How can these young Navajo men help...

Via the Standard, I need to correct the record. Yesterday I predicted that Pryor would join the mob of red-state Democrats frantically pushing Shinseki under the bus to protect themselves. I wrongly assumed that leaving 1,700 vets in Phoenix to twist in the wind on a secret wait list — a scheduling problem the IG explicitly said was “systemic” — would qualify as a firing offense, especially considering Shinseki had five years to right this ship. Not to Pryor, apparently. He needs to see more before his conscience is sufficiently troubled to pull the plug. Update: Via new Hot Air...

WATERVLIET – On this Memorial Day weekend, World War II veteran Joseph Teson is thinking about his fallen comrades – and his personal finances. I recently received a phone call from the local VA Clinic. They left a message to inform me of an upcoming appointment. It said I needed to fast. Yesterday, I received two letters from the VA. They were together in one envelope. One letter provided the same information as the phone message and confirmed the appointment. The other letter informed me that the appointment was cancelled. I called the clinic and they assured me that I still was still scheduled for the appointment. I asked about fasting and they told me to come one week prior to have blood drawn....
