ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Chester Nez, the last original Navajo Code Talker, has passed away in his Albuquerque home.
Nez was recruited with 28 other Native Americans by the U.S. Marines to create a code the Japanese couldn't crack during World War II.
Nez went into kidney failure Wednesday morning. He was 93.
"Many people have met him," said Judy Avila, a friend and author of Nez's memoir. "When you meet him, you're charmed by him."
He was the last living member of the group.
"There were a lot of people and naysayers who said, 'How can these young Navajo men help us?' But it turned out to be the only unbroken spoken code in modern warfare," said Avila.

Godspeed to the family, God bless the patriot.
Sadly we are losing the greatest generation this country has produced I pray that we will come full circle again not in my lifetime But i will still plant tress for the shade I will never know
Look at the date of this Seminole code talkers death.
The last surviving Seminole code talker, Edmond Harjo (US Army) of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, died on March 31, 2014, at the age of 96. Harjo had served as far afield as Normandy and the Battle of Iwo Jima during the war.
Bless you, Hero.
Enjoy your stay in heaven.
He served in both Normandy and Iwo Jima??? If only he had been a crew member on a 8th Air Force B-17 crew too he would have been the only triple crown winner of most dangerous assignments during WWII.
Rest in peace Mr. Nez. Thank you for your service to our country.
Remember the Army got around a lot, they did most of the fighting and dying in the Pacific, and had to do Africa and Europe.
My dad was Navy but he was in all three theaters during various stages of the war.
Thanks, CedarDave.
Ive had the honor of meeting some of the Code Talkers when accompanying my World War II Marine uncle to Marine Corps League events in the Four Corners area.
Beautiful sentiment, al baby. They were truly one of a kind.
RIP, Mr. Nez. You served our country well.

We still have a WWII Paiute code talker living in our community.
We'd be speaking German without these guys... good men all. May he rest in peace...
Even some Basque were used in WWII.
Active Duty ping.
When I heard the news from family that our hero had folded tents, I was saddened and heartened at the same time.
When some walk the earth, they do so in beauty. Our friend was such a man.
My father also a WWII vet passed this morning in his sleep
Possible interest ping.
