A neighbor called sheriff’s deputies on some rabid Tampa Bay Lightning fans who were screaming, “Shoot! Shoot!" as they watched Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final on TV Wednesday night. The call prompted several Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies to show up at Devon Garnett’s apartment door. He and two friends had gathered to watch the game at Garnett’s Radius Palms apartment. SNIP “So they came to the door and thought there were guns in the house,” Garnett, 26, told the Tampa Bay Times. “We’re like, ‘Nope, we’re just screaming for Steven Stamkos.’”

One of the most dramatic of sports stories gets the expert film it deserves in “The Russian Five,” a documentary that is moving in ways you won’t see coming. The sport is professional ice hockey, specifically the saga of the Detroit Red Wings, who in the 1990s changed both their professional trajectory and the way the game is played in the National Hockey League by boldly adding Russian players to the mix. The intensely human situations revealed by director Joshua Riehl will captivate you even if you don’t know a puck from a ping-pong ball. The key to “Russian Five’s”...

Canadian goaltender Braden Holtby said he will not visit the White House with his Washington Capitals teammates, joining forwards Brett Connolly and Devante Smith-Pelly as players who have declined the invitation to honor the team’s Stanley Cup victory Monday. “I’ve got to stay true to my values, and I’m going to respectfully decline the offer,” Holtby said Friday morning. “In saying that, it’s a tough situation for everyone to be in, to be forced to make a decision of that standing. You’re a team and you want to stick together no matter what, so I hope everyone kind of blows...

The two biggest items in Washington, D.C., crossed paths on Saturday night as Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner posed with the Stanley Cup. It was a matter of pure coincidence as the president's daughter and son-in-law visited D.C. hotspot Café Milano for a date night while Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin was celebrating with the Stanley Cup. The Capitals won the Stanley Cup, the NHL's championship trophy, on Thursday. They defeated the underdog Las Vegas Golden Knights in the series, 4-1, to win their first Cup. The Keeper of the Cup Philip Pritchard, who has traveled with the Cup as...

Across their 43 seasons, the Washington Capitals have dabbled in hapless hockey and exquisite hockey, boring hockey and effective hockey, but never had they played winning hockey through four playoff rounds, all the way to a grueling, glorious end. It took a team hardened by those postseason lures but liberated from high expectations to complete a run as dazzling as it was cathartic, capping it on Thursday night by dispatching the upstart Vegas Golden Knights, 4-3, to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history. It was the Capitals’ fourth consecutive victory in the finals after a disorienting 6-4 loss...

WINDSOR, Ont. - A new bridge between Windsor, Ont., and Detroit will be named after hockey legend Gordie Howe. Howe, who is now 87, was born in Floral, Sask., and came to be known as "Mr. Hockey." The still-to-be built Gordie Howe International Bridge is expected to be operational in 2020. The Windsor-Detroit corridor is the busiest commercial land crossing between the two countries and the border has long been a bottleneck. Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement today along with Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder at the river separating Canada and the U.S. Harper praised Howe as a proud...

VANCOUVER – Damage done to the psyche of those unwillingly caught up in last year’s Stanley Cup riot was the most expensive part of workers compensation claims related to the mayhem. In total, 24 of 51 filed claims were accepted by WorkSafeBC, the provincial workers compensation agency. Only four of them were for post-traumatic stress disorder, but the awards for those claims consumed $71,000 of the $117,000 in claims incurred in the riot’s aftermath. The Canadian Mental Health Association on its website says PTSD symptoms include flashbacks or nightmares, emotional numbing and withdrawing from friends and family. -snip- Kerry Jang,...
