The CBC is planning some counter-programming for female non-hockey fans who might be forced to tune into the Stanley Cup final next week. Viewers can go online to listen to an alternate commentary from Lena Sutherland and Jules Mancuso, who run WhileTheMenWatch.com. They describe their site as a sports talk show for women, “Sex and the City” meets ESPN, with banter “from a woman’s point of view.” “One afternoon while (our husbands) were both watching the same game on TV Jules and I were on the phone and we started just making comments to each other like, ‘Did you see...

Almost 150 people required hospital treatment and close to 100 were arrested after rioters swept through downtown Vancouver following a Canucks loss to the Boston Bruins in the decisive Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final. Vancouver Coastal Health spokeswoman Anna Marie D'Angelo said Thursday three stabbing victims have been admitted and an unidentified man is in critical condition with head injuries after a fall. Unhappy Vancouver Canucks fans are rioting in downtown Vancouver, and people are looting merchandise from The Bay and London Drugs. Young people unhappy about the Canucks' loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final broke windows at The Bay on Georgia Street and rioters were looting merchandise from the store from the Seymour Street side. Huge crowds gathered around the London Drugs location on Granville Street as people trashed the inside of the store and made off with stolen goods. Rioters danced around a burning van outside the store, tossing bottles into the blaze to...

POOR SPORTMENS conduct on display right after the Boston Bruins win the Stanley Cup Championship and it is NOT from the Vancouver Canucks team members themselves but from a large number of angry fans. While both the Boston Bruins and their fans both in Boston and throughout New England celebrate the Stanley Cup win after nearly forty years, the downtown area of the Canadian city of Vancouver EXPLODE into rioting. While I do give credit to the Vancouver Canucks for a successful season and a hard-fought effort to win the Stanley Cup, their fans could have learned from the team...

VANCOUVER, BC. - Despite some awful reports concerning the way Canucks fans were treated in Boston, the die-hard fans are expected to return for game six. Marie emailed News1130 to say the only place she wasn't harassed while in Boston was inside her hotel room. She says a group of teenage boys were verbally aggressive, and one Bruins fan even tried to shove his fingers in her mouth at TD Garden. (See her email below) The Green Men expected to be heckled in Boston, but Sully says some Bruins fans took it a bit far. "Game 4 was a little...

An eclectic mix of stars — The Stanley Cup with Blackhawks defenseman Brent Sopel, The Cubs’ Ernie Banks and country singer Chely Wright — basked in the celebration of an estimated 400,000 who attended the 41st Annual Pride Parade in the Lakeview neighborhood. The parade started at noon. Wright, who recently came out as a lesbian, is the parade’s Grand Marshal. Wright said her decision to publicly declare her sexual orientation has been “a dynamic experience.” Sopel, who stood on the float of the Chicago Gay Hockey Association, said he participated in the parade to honor the memory of the...

The image above (via Assignment Chicago) is a mural visible from the Eisenhower Expressway that depicts Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews(notes) after escaping from the Island of Dr. Moreau with trace amounts of swine DNA fused with his genetic code ... Oh, the jokes this pig-nosed image immediately launched. That Toews looks like the mutant nurse from "The Twilight Zone." That he resembles the fabled ManBearPig from "South Park." That he's the only player in the NHL who can smell the top of his own face shield. But while the transformation of Captain Marvel to Porky Pig may have...

scored two second-period goals, and the Pittsburgh Penguins overcame the loss of captain Sidney Crosby(notes) and a whole lot of history to beat the defending champion Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Friday night in Game 7 and win the Stanley Cup for the third time. Game 7 of the Final is hockey's ultimate contest For a hockey fan, Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final is like waiting for Christmas: It seems like the big day takes forever to get there, but when it does, it's well worth the wait. Of course, Christmas comes just once a year. A Final series that goes the maximum seven games comes along infrequently. Since the NHL expanded from the Original Six teams in 1967, the championship round has gone the distance just eight times, including this year's Final between Detroit and Pittsburgh. If the Stanley Cup Final is...

Good morning power players. Lots of coverage from the NHL.com crew off of last night's 3-1 Wings' victory. Your lineup includes Shawn P. Roarke, Dave Lozo, Larry Wigge, Phil Coffey and John Kreiser. Coffey has the game story covered right here. In a game that perfectly illustrated the slippery nature of hockey, the Red Wings took advantage of the breaks presented to them -- especially the lively end boards at Joe Louis Arena -- and the Pens could only shake their heads at the numerous chances that defied logic and stayed out of the net. Roarke has a very interesting...

It has been a quarter-century since the NHL had a rematch in the Stanley Cup Finals. And when the Edmonton Oilers beat the Islanders in 1984, it wasn't just the Cup that changed hands, it was the end of one dynasty and the start of another. Tonight, the Pittsburgh Penguins step into Joe Louis Arena to begin their quest for revenge and the third Cup in franchise history. To win it, they'll have to take down a Detroit Red Wings team that has won four Cups over the last 12 years and has shown no reason why it can't add...

NEW YORK -- The NHL went against its previous plan, pushing up the start of the Stanley Cup Finals to avoid a long layoff. The league announced Wednesday night that Detroit will host Pittsburgh on Saturday night in Game 1 of the first championship rematch in 25 years. Last week, the NHL said the Finals would begin June 5 if both conference finals were not decided by Tuesday. Plan B was put in place because NBC and the league didn't want to stunt the excitement about the matchup that has a potential to draw nontraditional viewers. Detroit and Pittsburgh, though,...

WASHINGTON D.C. – President George W. Bush held the Detroit Red Wings up as a shining example of the merits of perseverance during Tuesday's ceremony at the White House to salute the 2008 Stanley Cup champions. "Game 5 of the Final, you were just 34 seconds from raising the Cup, when the Pittsburgh Penguins scored to tie the game and then scored in triple overtime to extend the series," Bush told a standing-room only crowd in the East Room. "But you did not get discouraged, you were determined and you won; and we congratulate you for winning a very hard...
