The USA has won the gold medal game against Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships following a 5-4 victory in a shootout. The game was played at the Bell Centre in Montreal and Team Canada came out firing on all cylinders in the first period of play as they took a quick 2-0 lead within five-and-a-half minutes of play. Thomas Chabot scored at 4:38 into the period and Jeremy Lauzon followed up with another goal at 9:02. Team USA had defeated Canada in their first meeting of the tournament, but Canada quickly claimed command of the gold medal game...

The Timberwolves received a 90-minute tour of the White House that included a visit with President Obama during one of their two days between games in Philadelphia and Washington. The commander in chief and leader of the free world for the next two weeks offered them a scouting report of themselves. “Yeah,” Wolves guard Ricky Rubio said with a grin. “He said we’ve got to play better defense.”

PETE IACOBELLIJanuary 3, 2017 CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — No long stretches of games. More depth on defense. All in all, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney believes he has a fresher, steadier group heading into this year's national championship game with No. 1 Alabama. Swinney said his Tigers were impacted in 2015 by 10 consecutive weeks of grueling football from late September until the Atlantic Coast Conference title game in early December. On top of that, Swinney's defense was chock full of front line stars, yet had little experienced depth behind them. That's not the case this time around, at least not...

Ric Flair has a New Year's message to the world: deadlift this. The WWElegend is 67 but on Wednesday posted a video to Twitter that shows him deadlifting 400 pounds with the accompanying words: "I.Will.Never.Retire." After finishing the impressive feat of strength, Flair gives more of a "whoa!" than a solid"woo!", his trademark. Still, the video drew a range of responses from fellow wrestlers, past and present, as well thousands of others. Of course, the "Nature Boy" is never one to miss an opportunity. Hours after the video went viral, Flair was pitching merch from his online store.

Since Tuesday, 26 to 48 inches of fresh snow had fallen, with the deepest totals at the summit. Plows were working furiously to keep lots and streets clear. Normal resort operations could be affected as personnel struggle to deal with the snow.

Alex Scarborough January 4, 2017 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama's transition at offensive coordinator from Lane Kiffin to Steve Sarkisian is going smoothly as the team prepares to face Clemson in the College Football National Championship on Monday, coach Nick Saban said on Wednesday. Sarkisian has led two practices since assuming coordinator duties after Saban and Kiffin "mutually agreed" to part ways following the Crimson Tide's 24-7 win against Washington in the CFP semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl last Saturday. "It's been excellent," Saban said of the players' response to Sarkisian, who has been part of the staff as an...

It's probably just a little comedic relief, but you never know. Rob Schneider, the lovable funny man, has penned his bid — on Twitter that is — to purchase the beleaguered San Francisco 49ers from current owner and CEO Jed York. "Dear Jed York," Schneider wrote. "There is a chance for change at the top! I will put together a consortium of buyers. Please sell me the 49ers." The San Francisco native and longtime fan of the football franchise then elaborated on his plan to overhaul the struggling organization. Steve Young, the Hall of Fame quarterback who piloted the 49ers...

CLEMSON Clemson linebacker Ben Boulware downplayed Christian Wilkins groping an Ohio State player, as well as himself grabbing South Carolina offensive lineman Zack Bailey by the butt, when he met with the media on Wednesday. Boulware said it is something the Tigers have done all year to mess with players. “Is that really that big of a deal? People that are blowing that up have never played the game, or like I said, went into the bathroom stalls to change because they were scared to change in front of their teammates,” Boulware said. “Me and Christian have fun out there....

The Dalbeys are lifelong Cubs fans. Ellen Dalbey had suggested "Wrigley" as a boy's name, which Aaron said he wasn't too keen on. "The next day, she threw it out there for a girl." Aaron Dalbey said. "She wanted 'Wrigley Rose,' because Rose comes from her aunt. So, 'Wrigley Rose' went together and fit perfectly both being as big of Cubs fans as we are."

Richard Johnson January 2, 2017 Steve Sarkisian will assume the duties immediately. In a deviation from the original plan, Lane Kiffin will not call plays for Alabama in the National Championship. Instead, he’ll head to FAU early and assume his head coaching duties. The timing of this is fairly interesting. Kiffin was originally slated to stick around. Former Bama assistants Jim Mcelwain and Kirby Smart stuck around for the Tide balancing their new head coaching duties and coordinator responsibilities in Tuscaloosa. Now the responsibility will fall to former Washington and USC coach Steve Sarkisian. Sark has been an offensive analyst...

A little more than 11 months ago, Clelin Ferrell occupied a spot on the same University of Phoenix Stadium turf in the same No. 99 jersey and stood ready to contribute at defensive end for Clemson in the national championship game. That this most certainly would not happen was beside the point. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament as a high school senior and spent his first college season regaining strength and timing, concentrating on reconstruction rather than production. Also, he simply wasn’t needed; if the program was flush anywhere, it was along a feral defensive line anchored by two...

This news organization spent an hour talking to Edwards, 74, about what Kaepernick has done and where the movement needs to go. Here is an edited version of the conversation with the UC Berkeley professor emeritus who lives in Fremont: . . . "When I contacted the Smithsonian (new National Museum of African American History and Culture), I told them they shouldn’t wait another five or six years to get Kap’s shoes, jersey and photo of the Time magazine cover and a photo of him kneeling. They need to do that now. They absolutely agreed."

In every office, every corporate executive suite, and every law firm across this great land, the men who had got pantsed and received numerous swirlies at the hands of jocks in high school finally have their chance at redemption against their brawny tormentors. According to a press release from CBS, “The Big Bang Theory,” the brainy sitcom which references pyramids and autotrophs in its theme song, beat out NBC’s Sunday Night Football as the top-rated, live, primetime same day show. For the past five years Sunday Night Football had owned that coveted, top spot.

Dec 23, 2016Ted Miller Washington and Alabama first played in the 1926 Rose Bowl. AP Photo The rise of Southeastern football in general and Alabama football specifically and all the endless gloating that goes along with it? It's Washington's fault. That isn't just jealous prattle from fans of Oregon or Washington State, likely the two fan bases most annoyed by the Huskies' sudden rise to the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl opposite the vaunted Crimson Tide. No, it's a perfectly reasonable extrapolation from the words of multiple historians and sportswriters. On the surface, No. 4 Washington...

Marv Levy is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his work as head coach of the Bills from 1986 to 1997. And if given the opportunity, he’d be up for trying to get them back to the Super Bowl. Levy told 104.5 The Team in Albany that he thinks he’d be up to the task, even though he’s now 91 years old. “I might do it,” Levy said. “It was one of those things where after forty seven years of coaching I really needed to get that deep breath to step aside but after a couple of years...

When the 49ers announced their team awards Friday afternoon, Kaepernick was the recipient of the Len Eshmont Award, given to the 49er who "best exemplifies the inspirational and courageous play of Len Eshmont, an original member of the 1946 49ers team." The award, which was established after Eshmont died in 1957, is considered the most prestigious honor the players vote on.
