The USA has won the gold medal game against Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships following a 5-4 victory in a shootout.

The game was played at the Bell Centre in Montreal and Team Canada came out firing on all cylinders in the first period of play as they took a quick 2-0 lead within five-and-a-half minutes of play.  Thomas Chabot scored at 4:38 into the period and Jeremy Lauzon followed up with another goal at 9:02.

Team USA had defeated Canada in their first meeting of the tournament, but Canada quickly claimed command of the gold medal game in the early going.

However, the U.S. bounced right back in the second period scoring their first goal after three minutes of play at 3:04. Assistant captain Charlie McAvoy helped his team get on the board with his second goal of the tournament chopping Canada’s lead to 2-1.

Then with 9:30 left in the period, the U.S. tied the game at 2-2 on a power play goal from Kieffer Bellows. Canada went into the third on a power play and capitalized with a goal from Nicolas Roy to give them a 3-2 advantage with just over eighteen minutes left to play. Then Mathieu Joseph scored three minutes later to make it 4-2 for Canada.

It wasn’t long after that the U.S. came firing back with two quick goals on another from Kieffer Bellows (4:44) and one from Colin White (7:07) to tie the game a 4-4 with twelve minutes left in the third period.

Unfortunate to go to a shootout, but if tackling was considered a penalty then USA probably would have had as many power play chances as Canada got, so the right team probably won the skills exhibition.

Absolutely true. Great gameplay by these (dare I say) "kids". Watched the whole tournament and missed a ton of NHL games to do so. USA vs Canada is a fitting final. A USA overall win is awesome. In a shootout! Most awesome. I'm gonna have withdrawal symptoms.

Fully agree, was just going to post a WJHC article here.

Absolutely love watching this tournament every year, possibly the best combo of pure hockey and level of competition of all the tournaments. Less commercial than the Olympics. The World Cup comes closest.

As an Isles fan loved how Barzal played all tourney and how Bellows stepped up in the final. And came to have great respect for Russia’s captain Kaprizov, he was the best all around player in the tournament to me. What a steal for the Wild in Round 5 last year!

Another thing to like about this is those players who are draft-eligible in 2017 and take a big step up as well as those drafted who can use this as a springboard for confidence building.
