So Conor Gillaspie in 2016 is Marco Scutaro from 2012 or Travis Ishikawa from 2014 or Cody Ross from 2010, at least for one enormous Wild-Card game and that means it could go on and on again… And Madison Bumgarner in 2016 is… Madison Bumgarner, the perpetual postseason legend. That’s a two-paragraph summary of the Giants’ scintillating 3-0 Wild-Card victory over the Mets tonight, and yes, obviously, the patterns and connections from the previous three Giants postseason trips are impossible to ignore. You know who probably understands this better than anybody? That’d be the Cubs, who now face the Giants...

Brock Yates, Car and Driver’s Assassin, lost his long battle with Alzheimer’s on October 5, 2016. We take solace in the words he crafted for this publication, his screenplays, and his books, a legacy that long ago became permanent and prominent chapters of the American legend... Yates joined Car and Driver in 1964, as managing editor—although he claimed no experience in either managing or editing... Yates created the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash in 1971, a coast-to-coast public road race...

The NFL has been sacked for a loss. Once considered immune to the audience erosion plaguing the television industry, ratings for the National Football League have tumbled through the first four weeks of the season. TV networks have bet heavily on sports in general, and the NFL in particular, because of the must-see value of their content. While more viewers are watching commercial-free streaming services like Netflix or recording shows on DVRs and skipping the ads, sports is still primarily watched live, making it valuable to advertisers.

It's the Kaepernick Effect, stupid. The alarming fall in NFL TV ratings this season is partly because of fan anger over on-field protests by Colin Kaepernick and other players of the American flag/national anthem, according to pollster Rasmussen Reports.

As schools and cities are cancelling events across South Florida due to the impending storms of Hurricane Matthew, several sports teams are making decisions about games over the next few days in the area. The Florida Panthers cancelled their final home preseason game, scheduled for Thursday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. It’s the first time the team has had to cancel a game since Hurricane Wilma came through the area in 2005. In the most anticipated game of the weekend, the Miami Hurricanes say their game against the rival Florida State Seminoles – scheduled for 8 PM Saturday night at...

The two suspects are Oakland Raiders fans from New York Two Raiders fans from the tri-state -- including one who is a firefighter -- were charged with assault after authorities said they critically injured a man at a Baltimore Ravens game over the weekend. Susan Bauer told WBAL in Baltimore that her 55-year-old brother Joseph Bauer was attending the game with his wife Sunday when he got into an argument with a group of Raiders fans at M&T Bank Stadium. Authorities said that the two attackers, 28-year-old Scott Smith and 31-year-old Andrew Nappi, got angry when the siblings let a...

<p>LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — A farewell to the King turned somber when Jack Nicklaus, his voice cracking as a large tear formed in his left eye, urged the elite and the everyman to remember how Arnold Palmer touched their lives and "please don't forget why."</p>

What do NFL quarterbacks do on their bye weeks? If you’re Carson Wentz, you go out and bag yourself a “bye week buck.” If you haven’t been keeping track, Carson Wentz is really good at football, and he’s an avid outdoorsman, too. Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz is off to an incredible start in his debut NFL season. He has lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a 3-0 start and (knock on wood) has yet to throw an interception thus far. He’s a bright, young talent and is making an early bid for the NFL Rookie of the Year. On many occasions,...

The Cleveland Browns got screwed by a fumble call, when the ball was already in the possession of Duke Johnson and he stood up, while players fought for something else in a pile. To most rational people who can watch something with their own eyes, that’s what happened. However, rather than just acknowledge the mistake and move on (something that has happened many times in the past), the NFL is bizarrely digging its heels in on this one.

Texas isn’t firing Charlie Strong, but it certainly isn’t doing him any favors, according to a report that indicates he is “very close” to losing his job at the end of the season after consecutive losses to Cal and Oklahoma State. A high-ranking official described Strong’s status to SI’s Pete Thamel, adding that his job is safe until the end of the season. Strong is in his third season as coach of the 2-2 Longhorns, who wrap up their schedule Nov. 25.

Giants left fielder Angel Pagan body-slammed an animal rights activist clutching white paper flowers, who ran onto the field into the outfield grass at AT&T Park during the fourth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. The tackle, caught on camera, went viral. On Saturday, Wayne Hsiung, who landed in a heap beneath Pagan, said he is member of a Berkeley-based group called Direct Action Everywhere. Hsiung said he rushed the field in an attempt to bring attention to animal violence allegedly perpetrated by Farmer John, the company that supplies Dodger Dogs — the famous hot dogs served...

Prelims airing now on Fox Sports 2, a channel I know a lot of people don't get and Fox Sports GO. Main card at 11 eastern on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports GO, it's in Portland which is why it started so late. Former Flyweight title challenger John Dodson moves up to 135 and takes on John Lineker, who missed weight so it's a catchweight fight. Lineker moved up to 135 cause he kept missing weight at 125, and now he misses weight again. Former Bellator LW Champ Ill Will Brooks faces Alex Oliveira in the co-main event, Oliveira...

Records: Landry-Walker (3-2, 2-0), Bonnabel (0-5, 0-2) HOW IT WAS WON It was a controversial past week for the Bonnabel football program, and things didn't get any easier as Landry-Walker quarterback Keytaon Thompson continued his stellar season of play, accounting for five touchdowns in the victory at home. While Thompson was the contest's key player, there was an even bigger story taking place during pregame. A video released across social media last week showed the Bruins' team kneeling during the playing of the national anthem. As a result, the Bonnabel's Alumni Association reportedly canceled several fundraising events. On Friday night, however,...

It’s rare that the football world gasps over midweek injury report in September. Especially when that player is a defensive lineman, who toils in the meat-pile anonymity of the trenches. But J.J. Watt is a rare football player. Watt, widely regarded as the NFL’s best defensive player, had surgery on his back yesterday, and will be out for the rest of the season. And considering the violent nature of pro football, his rabid pass-rushing style and the precarious nature of back injuries, some wonder if Watt will ever return, at least to his all-world form.
