• Washington Post: Can Americans ditch guns the way we ditched cigarettes?

Not that long ago, cigarettes were completely woven into American culture. The Marlboro Man, posters telling us that “more doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette,” even the armrests on planes and all our cars were designed for smokers. And now? Not so much. Can it work like that with guns? (snip) I grew up surrounded by cigarette smoke. My dad smoked. So did practically everyone else I knew. But my kids? Totally different. They saw someone smoking in a restaurant while we were traveling abroad recently and they freaked out, like they’d witnessed a beheading. Inconceivable in their world.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has announced a deal with Senate Democrats to fund the government and set spending levels for defense and nondefense programs over the next two years. The legislation would avert a government shutdown on Friday, when federal funding is due to expire, and boost defense and nondefense programs. It also lifts the debt ceiling to March 2019, which White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders hailed as a decision that would move Congress away from "crisis-to-crisis budgeting." The deal is backed by McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), and will almost certainly be...

Social Security is, barring an immediate and massive overhaul in how benefits are paid to the back-end of the Baby Boomer generation and beyond, on its deathbed. There can be no mistaking that fact. Veronique de Rugy explains at Reason: Since 2010, [Social Security] has been running at a cash-flow deficit – meaning that the Social Security payroll taxes the government collects aren't enough to cover the benefits it's obliged to pay out. That should have been a signal that the time had come to look at reform. Instead, we've spent the last seven years ignoring the problem. To get...

I received a text from my Son In Law who is deployed in Africa. He sent me a text photo of the TV in the O-Club. All it showed was the logo of AFN...and a statement that said due to the government shut down, AFN will remain off air until the issue is resolved. Now, I know TV is not "essential." But I sure as hell would not want a few thousand troops to miss the Conference Finals later. Talk about a morale suck.

WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats, showing remarkable solidarity on Friday in the face of a clear political danger, blocked consideration of a stopgap spending measure to keep the government operating, leaving less than two hours for lawmakers to find a way to avert a midnight shutdown of much of the federal government.Senate Republican leaders fell well short of the 60 votes necessary to proceed on the spending bill, which had passed the House on Thursday. Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, was trying to rally support for a shorter temporary spending measure that would allow both parties to save face.But...
  • CNN to Dems: Why Did You Vote to Shut Down the Government?

Democrats insist they don't want the government to shut down this weekend, but their votes don't back up their claims. On Thursday, the House passed a short term spending bill to keep the government funded. Only five Democrats voted yes. It needs 60 votes to pass the Senate, but plenty of Democratic senators have indicated they'll vote against any measure that simply "kicks the can down the road."CNN anchors - yes CNN - are calling them out on their hypocrisy.Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) was pressed about why he voted against the measure. He says he voted against a continuing resolution,...

Democrats on Capitol Hill continue to put the needs of illegal immigrants over Americans Friday afternoon as the likelihood of a government shutdown increases by the hour. During an emergency White House briefing Friday morning, Budget Director Mick Mulvaney explained what will happen if Democrats don't agree to a deal by midnight. "The military will still go to work. They will not get paid. The border will still be patrolled. They will not get paid. Folks will still be fighting the fires out West. They will not get paid. The parks will be open. People won't get paid," Mulvaney said. "Parks will...

While it is hard to see through all the tax bill drama, our federal government is, once again, facing a potential government shutdown on Friday. While we all hope and expect that this disaster will be averted, it is important to understand what can happen when the government shuts down. It’s happened before, as recently as 2013, and there’s no reason to think it won’t happen again. And it can have a direct impact on military families. Please note: very little is written in law. Much of this information comes from understanding what has happened in previous shutdowns and interpretations...

RUSH: Let me just tell you what I firmly believe is going on, and that means it is what’s going on. In the first place — folks, never forget this — this is what disrupting the status quo in Washington looks like. And it’s gonna look like this every day that Trump is in office attempting to disrupt. This is what pushing back against the swamp looks like. Donald Trump was elected to do just this. The people that elected Donald Trump sent him there to turn upside down the way Washington has been working for all of these recent...

President Trump announced Wednesday he is shutting down two jobs councils, amid a wave of resignations by executives in the wake of the president’s response to the violence in Charlottesville. "Rather than putting pressure on the businesspeople of the Manufacturing Council & Strategy & Policy Forum, I am ending both. Thank you all!" he wrote on Twitter. The statement came amid multiple reports that the Strategic and Policy Forum, a group of top business leaders, had already agreed to disband.

President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans who control Congress face their first major budget test next week, with the threat of a U.S. government shutdown potentially hinging on his proposed Mexican border wall as well as Obamacare funding. With Republicans controlling the White House and both chambers of Congress, keeping the federal government operating is a basic test of their ability to govern, but their task could become even more complicated if they insist on using the spending legislation to bring about contentious policy changes. Not only must Republicans overcome intraparty ideological divisions that stopped major healthcare legislation last month, but...

The American people will have to absorb higher deficits, greater debt, less economic liberty and more corporate welfare. Congress cannot seem to help itself in bending to every whim of special interests. How can they face their constituents when they continue to burden our children and grandchildren with debts they will never be able to repay? Our government is failing us, so we must do something about it. Who knows how bad things will be when the next administration comes in and has to pick up the pieces?

Ohio's Planned Parenthood chapter has caught the eye of the state's attorney general after an investigation found that the non-profit's three locations in the Buckeye State sent aborted baby parts to their disposal service, who then dropped them into landfills, according to the Hill. Of course, Planned Parenthood denied the claims, but also said that the question about baby parts ending up in landfills is something for their disposal service to answer. The publication added that Mike Dewine, Ohio's Attorney General, has also notified the state's Department of Health. He said that Planned Parenthood violated Ohio's Administrative Code, which states...
