May 23, 2017 Tuesday of the Sixth Week of Easter Reading 1 Acts 16:22-34The crowd in Philippi joined in the attack on Paul and Silas, and the magistrates had them strippedand ordered them to be beaten with rods. After inflicting many blows on them, they threw them into prisonand instructed the jailer to guard them securely. When he received these instructions, he put them in the innermost celland secured their feet to a stake. About midnight, while Paul and Silas were prayingand singing hymns to God as the prisoners listened, there was suddenly such a severe earthquakethat the foundations of the jail shook;all the...

I am copying a Freepmail I got from another person for Farmer Dean. Farmer Dean, an all around good and likable guy, is starting chemo and more radiation for colon cancer today. I asked him if he wanted us to pray for him and he was very thankful and said yes. It is beautiful when Christians realize that prayers from other Christians, regardless of denomination, is a powerful thing. My mom’s been going to Mass for him and he has been so very grateful. Just a good guy whom I pray beats this through and through.

Evangelical Christians love America. Some see in her the last hope of creating a Christian nation. But it is not a Christian nation. It is pagan to the core. It is in danger of becoming, if it is not already, the new “Evil Empire.” The Mayflower Compact is a museum piece, a relic of a forgotten era. “In God We Trust” is now a lie. Yes, we must always work for social reform. Yes, we must be “profane” in Martin Luther’s sense of going out of the temple and into the world. We do not despise the country of our...

A church that cares not for truth is a community that rejects its very mission. The person who says, “I’m not interested in doctrine or theology,” is not “of the truth.” He or she has missed the voice of Jesus. For the church to be the church, she must bow before her King and embrace the mission He has given to her. Yes, we desire a cultural reformation and a restoration of public morality. But that is secondary to and dependent on our mission to bear witness to the truth. Doctrine is important because its central concern is for an...

“Immediately [Jesus] made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.” - Mark 6:45–46 We are accustomed to understanding the shepherding language in Scripture in warm, pastoral terms of comfort. Certainly, that is appropriate, since the Bible often uses shepherding imagery in such a way (for example, Ps. 23). However, the language of shepherd and sheep also appears in reference to military leaders. It is applied to Assyrian generals in Nahum...

It was the exodus of the Old Testament that earned the ancient Israelites the description of “pilgrims and sojourners.” They were a semi-nomadic people who lived the life of what Harvey Cox once likened to a floating craps game. They moved from place to place. Even their church was a tent that had to be pitched and taken down repeatedly as they followed the lead of God in the wilderness. This image figures prominently in the New Testament portrayal of the Incarnation. In John’s Gospel, it is written that the Logos, the divine Word, was “with God” and “was God”...

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem Isaiah Isaiah 31 Woe to Those Who Rely on Egypt 31 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help,     who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots     and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel,     or seek help from the Lord. 2 Yet he too is wise and can bring disaster;     he does not take back his words. He will rise up against that wicked nation,     against those who help evildoers. 3 But the Egyptians are mere mortals and not...

The Often-Disappointing Quality of the Prayer of the Faithful Msgr. Charles Pope • May 21, 2017 • One of the parts of the Ordinary Form of the Mass that was “restored” from antiquity is the Prayer of the Faithful. In my mind, however, there is a certain disappointing quality to the intentions as they are used today. They are either overly particular and ideological or, at the other end of the spectrum, perfunctory and flat. Peter Kwasniewski, in an article at New Liturgical Movement.org (here), summarizes the problem very well.It is surely no exaggeration to say that throughout the...

Add year to year     and let your cycle of festivals go on. 2 Yet I will besiege Ariel;     she will mourn and lament,     she will be to me like an altar hearth.[a] 3 I will encamp against you on all sides;     I will encircle you with towers     and set up my siege works against you. 4 Brought low, you will speak from the ground;     your speech will mumble out of the dust. May 18, 2017 Thursday of the Fifth Week of Easter Reading 1 Acts 15:7-21After much debate had taken place,Peter got up and said to the Apostles and the presbyters,"My brothers, you are well aware that from early daysGod made his choice among you that through my mouththe Gentiles would hear the word of the Gospel and believe. And God, who knows the heart, bore witness by granting them the Holy Spiritjust as he did us.He made no distinction between us and them, for by faith he purified their hearts. Why, then, are you now putting God to the testby placing on the shoulders...

May 17, 2017 Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Easter Reading 1 Acts 15:1-6Some who had come down from Judea were instructing the brothers,"Unless you are circumcised according to the Mosaic practice, you cannot be saved."Because there arose no little dissension and debateby Paul and Barnabas with them,it was decided that Paul, Barnabas, and some of the othersshould go up to Jerusalem to the Apostles and presbytersabout this question. They were sent on their journey by the Church, and passed through Phoenicia and Samariatelling of the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the brethren. When they arrived in Jerusalem, they were...
