The Drawing of the Father " No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him… —John 6:44 " When God begins to draw me to Himself, the problem of my will comes in immediately. Will I react positively to the truth that God has revealed? Will I come to Him? To discuss or deliberate over spiritual matters when God calls is inappropriate and disrespectful to Him. When God speaks, never discuss it with anyone as if to decide what your response may be (see Galatians 1:15-16). Belief is not the result of an intellectual...

December 22, 2014Monday of the Fourth Week of Advent    Reading 1 1 Sm 1:24-28 In those days,Hannah brought Samuel with her, along with a three-year-old bull,an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and presented him at the temple of the LORD in Shiloh. After the boy’s father had sacrificed the young bull,Hannah, his mother, approached Eli and said:“Pardon, my lord!As you live, my lord,I am the woman who stood near you here, praying to the LORD. I prayed for this child, and the LORD granted my request. Now I, in turn, give him to the LORD;as long as...

Experience or God’s Revealed Truth? " We have received…the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. —1 Corinthians 2:12 " My experience is not what makes redemption real— redemption is reality. Redemption has no real meaning for me until it is worked out through my conscious life. When I am born again, the Spirit of God takes me beyond myself and my experiences, and identifies me with Jesus Christ. If I am left only with my personal experiences, I am left with something not produced by...

The Right Kind of Help " And I, if I am lifted up…will draw all peoples to Myself. —John 12:32 " Very few of us have any understanding of the reason why Jesus Christ died. If sympathy is all that human beings need, then the Cross of Christ is an absurdity and there is absolutely no need for it. What the world needs is not “a little bit of love,” but major surgery. When you find yourself face to face with a person who is spiritually lost, remind yourself of Jesus Christ on the cross. If that person can get...

ˇ         The Meaning of Christmas: Look Deeper ˇ         PETER KREEFT While Christmas is so familiar that we sometimes wonder whether anything fresh and true can be said about it, there is a way to explore its meaning that may seem new to us today, yet is in fact quite traditional, dating back to the Middle Ages and the ancient Fathers of the Church.Modern interpreters often argue about whether a given Scripture passage should be interpreted literally or symbolically. Medieval writers would question the either/or approach. They thought a passage could have as many as four right interpretations, one literal...

Catholics in many cultures have prayed the Christmas Novena (nine consecutive days of prayer), from December 16-24. It is a devotion well worth reviving, particularly in young families, for it focuses attention intensely on our expectation of the Coming King, and helps to prepare us spiritually to receive him into our hearts. The Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy (on theVatican web site) comments on the background of the Christmas Novena, and suggests the use of the "O Antiphons" (see below) in the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours, at Vespers: "103. The Christmas novena began as...

The Focus Of Our Message " I did not come to bring peace but a sword. —Matthew 10:34 " Never be sympathetic with a person whose situation causes you to conclude that God is dealing harshly with him. God can be more tender than we can conceive, and every once in a while He gives us the opportunity to deal firmly with someone so that He may be viewed as the tender One. Test of Faithfulness " We know that all things work together for good to those who love God… —Romans 8:28 " It is only a faithful person who truly believes that God sovereignly controls his circumstances. We take our circumstances for granted, saying God is in control, but not really believing it. We act as if the things that happen were completely controlled by people. To be faithful in every circumstance means that we have only one loyalty, or object of our faith— the Lord Jesus Christ. God may cause our circumstances to suddenly fall apart, which may bring...

Intercessory Prayer " …men always ought to pray and not lose heart. —Luke 18:1 " You cannot truly intercede through prayer if you do not believe in the reality of redemption. Instead, you will simply be turning intercession into useless sympathy for others, which will serve only to increase the contentment they have for remaining out of touch with God. True intercession involves bringing the person, or the circumstance that seems to be crashing in on you, before God, until you are changed by His attitude toward that person or circumstance. It was not altogether surprising as people with nontraditional beliefs increasingly are demanding their place in the public square. Personality " …that they may be one just as We are one… —John 17:22 " Personality is the unique, limitless part of our life that makes us distinct from everyone else. We don’t know the great depths of our being, therefore we cannot measure ourselves. We start out thinking we can, but soon realize that there is really only one Being who fully understands us, and that is our...

Individuality " Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself…" —Matthew 16:24 " Individuality is the hard outer layer surrounding the inner spiritual life. Individuality shoves others aside, separating and isolating people. We see it as the primary characteristic of a child, and rightly so. When we confuse individuality with the spiritual life, we remain isolated. This shell of individuality is God’s created natural covering designed to protect the spiritual life. But our individuality must be yielded to God so that our spiritual life may be brought forth into fellowship with...
