As Christians, we are new creations. Our hearts of stone have been turned into hearts of flesh. In this metaphor, flesh is used as a positive figure, not a pejorative one. Where once my heart was cold and recalcitrant, dead and inert to the things of God, now it throbs and pulsates with spiritual life. Once I was biologically alive but spiritually dead. Now I am biologically alive and spiritually alive as well. I am a new person. There is radical discontinuity between my new self and my old self. This radical discontinuity, however, is not total discontinuity. A link...

Black magic goes up in flames when we pray. I put a prayer on you, “I-put-a-spell-on-you-Mr-President Diana Wagman. My prayer is not meant to harm you, but only to keep you and thousands of witches from succeeding at their task of spell-binding, through black magic, the President of the United States of America. Prayer is so much more powerful than “A Spell to Bind Donald Trump and All Those Who Abet Him” under each waning crescent moon at midnight, and very much worth it. People who pray, don’t need itty bitty orange candle stubs when speaking directly to the Almighty....

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem Isaiah Isaiah 33 Distress and Help 33 Woe to you, destroyer,     you who have not been destroyed! Woe to you, betrayer,     you who have not been betrayed! When you stop destroying,     you will be destroyed; when you stop betraying,     you will be betrayed. 2 Lord, be gracious to us;     we long for you. Be our strength every morning,     our salvation in time of distress. 3 At the uproar of your army, the peoples flee;     when you rise up, the nations scatter. 4 Your plunder, O nations, is harvested as by young locusts;     like a swarm of locusts...

Millions of people love Apple computers and wouldn't be caught using a PC. By contrast, there are many millions of PC users who feel the same way about Apple computers. Many men like double-breasted suits, but I wouldn't be caught dead in one. Some people swear by Cadillac cars, but my favorite is Mercedes-Benz. Despite these strongly held preferences, there's no conflict. We never see Apple computer lovers picketing firms that serve PC lovers. Mercedes-Benz lovers don't battle Cadillac lovers. In free markets, people with strong differences in preferences get along and often are good friends. The reason is simple....

The story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde could be an allegory for the Christian life. There is a war in our members, a constant conflict between the old and the new, between vice and virtue, sin and obedience. We seem to be moral schizoids. It is a struggle between what the Bible calls the “old man” and the “new man.” Whenever I hear an evangelist declare, “Come to Jesus and all your problems will be over,” I cringe because I am hearing false advertising. I cringe because this promise conflicts with my experience and my spiritual pilgrimage. In one...

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem Isaiah Isaiah 32 The Kingdom of Righteousness 32 See, a king will reign in righteousness     and rulers will rule with justice. 2 Each one will be like a shelter from the wind     and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in the desert     and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land. 3 Then the eyes of those who see will no longer be closed,     and the ears of those who hear will listen. 4 The fearful heart will know and understand,     and the stammering tongue will be fluent and clear. 5 No longer...

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Many of the Republican presidential candidates descended Friday on Greenville ahead of Saturday's CBS debate. But only one was savvy enough to get himself enlisted as the opening act of a throbbing, trembling Christian rock concert that packed 14,000 evangelicals into a downtown arena on Friday night. So here came Ted Cruz, striding onto the catwalk of a stage, beaming under the spotlight, leading the crowd in prayer, asking them to unite behind him in next Saturday's primary election, and jumping up like a basketball player high-fiving fans as he walked into the locker rooms in the bowels of...

I am copying a Freepmail I got from another person for Farmer Dean. Farmer Dean, an all around good and likable guy, is starting chemo and more radiation for colon cancer today. I asked him if he wanted us to pray for him and he was very thankful and said yes. It is beautiful when Christians realize that prayers from other Christians, regardless of denomination, is a powerful thing. My mom’s been going to Mass for him and he has been so very grateful. Just a good guy whom I pray beats this through and through.

Evangelical Christians love America. Some see in her the last hope of creating a Christian nation. But it is not a Christian nation. It is pagan to the core. It is in danger of becoming, if it is not already, the new “Evil Empire.” The Mayflower Compact is a museum piece, a relic of a forgotten era. “In God We Trust” is now a lie. Yes, we must always work for social reform. Yes, we must be “profane” in Martin Luther’s sense of going out of the temple and into the world. We do not despise the country of our...

A church that cares not for truth is a community that rejects its very mission. The person who says, “I’m not interested in doctrine or theology,” is not “of the truth.” He or she has missed the voice of Jesus. For the church to be the church, she must bow before her King and embrace the mission He has given to her. Yes, we desire a cultural reformation and a restoration of public morality. But that is secondary to and dependent on our mission to bear witness to the truth. Doctrine is important because its central concern is for an...

“Immediately [Jesus] made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.” - Mark 6:45–46 We are accustomed to understanding the shepherding language in Scripture in warm, pastoral terms of comfort. Certainly, that is appropriate, since the Bible often uses shepherding imagery in such a way (for example, Ps. 23). However, the language of shepherd and sheep also appears in reference to military leaders. It is applied to Assyrian generals in Nahum...

It was the exodus of the Old Testament that earned the ancient Israelites the description of “pilgrims and sojourners.” They were a semi-nomadic people who lived the life of what Harvey Cox once likened to a floating craps game. They moved from place to place. Even their church was a tent that had to be pitched and taken down repeatedly as they followed the lead of God in the wilderness. This image figures prominently in the New Testament portrayal of the Incarnation. In John’s Gospel, it is written that the Logos, the divine Word, was “with God” and “was God”...

The Often-Disappointing Quality of the Prayer of the Faithful Msgr. Charles Pope • May 21, 2017 • One of the parts of the Ordinary Form of the Mass that was “restored” from antiquity is the Prayer of the Faithful. In my mind, however, there is a certain disappointing quality to the intentions as they are used today. They are either overly particular and ideological or, at the other end of the spectrum, perfunctory and flat. Peter Kwasniewski, in an article at New Liturgical Movement.org (here), summarizes the problem very well.It is surely no exaggeration to say that throughout the...
