Two people were fatally stabbed after trying to intervene when a man was spewing "hate speech" on a Portland, Oregon train on Friday, police said. The suspect, who was not immediately identified, was captured south of the Hollywood transit center shortly after the 4:30 p.m. stabbing on a MAX light rail train, Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson said.

What began as a peaceful march for labor rights on May Day in Portland turned violent as a group of self-described anarchists threw objects at officers and officers fired non-lethal weapons back. Police canceled the permitted march and deemed it a riot as tensions escalated.  Portland police arrested 25 protesters, on charges ranging from arson to assault, criminal mischief and theft. Portland Police officers dressed in riot gear patrolled the march, and worked to keep the opposing groups on opposite sides of the street despite several cases of "intermingling." Officers said they saw demonstrators with guns, improvised weapons, and defensive gear in the area, but no violence was reported. Police did, however, arrest one person wearing a pumpkin outfit for disorderly conduct. The person was later identified as a man named Luis Marquez. Portland police this week arrested a 20-year-old homeless man who they say repeatedly sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl who'd run away from her home and was living with him for a few days in a Southeast Portland park.
