NO COPS”, got into more shouting and shoving matches, and were plowed into by one driver on Peacock Lane, which is home to one of the biggest Christmas light displays in Portland.

Full title: Kid Holding ‘Free Hugs’ Sign at Protest Attracts Cop’s Attention. What Happens at the End of Their Encounter Goes Viral. Police Sergeant Bret Barnum was wearing protective head gear and patrolling a protest earlier this week in Portland, Oregon — one of several flashpoint U.S. cities that have seen demonstrations after a grand jury decided not to indict a white police officer who fatally shot a 18-year-old black man in Ferguson, Missouri, in August. But amid the and anger and loud voices on Nov. 25, something altogether different got Barnum’s attention: A kid with tears in his eyes...

A Portland activist said she was “disgusted” over recent Facebook postings by Portland police that displayed solidarity with a Missouri police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black teen. On Monday afternoon, a Missouri grand jury had yet to announce if it had indicted officer Darren Wilson after Michael Brown, 18, was shot and killed on Aug 9. Sunday evening, a social media flurry kicked up on Facebook after three Portland police officers posted images of a police badge covered by a black band reading “I am Darren Wilson.” “I think it’s sickening and it promotes fear amongst our...

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The fate of a little-noticed ballot measure in strongly Democratic Oregon serves as a warning to President Barack Obama and his party about the political perils of immigration policy. Even as Oregon voters were legalizing recreational marijuana and expanding Democratic majorities in state government, they decided by a margin of 66-34 to cancel a new state law that would have provided driver's licenses to people who are in the United States illegally. Obama is considering acting on his own, as early as this week, to possibly shield from deportation up to 5 million immigrants now living...

A week ago I wrote an article about the unicorn event of an open carrier having his firearm stolen by an armed robber.   It is only the second event that has been documented.   Numerous pundits sided with those who want their political opponents disarmed.   An important detail was left out of the story. Multnomah County, where the robbery took place, requires that openly carried guns must be unloaded.   The ordinance makes it an offense to possess a loaded magazine or speed loader if you do not have a concealed carry permit.  As the open carrier was barely old enough...

Just before the sentence was announced by Senior U.S. District Judge Garr M. King at 11:25 a.m., Mohamud stood and apologized to the court. "The things I said and did were terrible," he said. "I want to apologize to everyone, to the community." He also apologized to the Muslim community, saying he wants people to know that Islam does not preach hate. Mohamud, now...

The feline uprising is upon us, and to be fair, it's about damn time. Our cat companions have suffered for too long at the hands of the internet, as we rush to monetize their every move. Have you ever stopped and considered the fact that maybe they don't want to be internet famous? While we continue to ignore their right to privacy, cats across the nation are rising up against their owners to say: We're mad as hell, and we're not gonna take it anymore, and also, meow, please give us more dry food. Earlier this year, a 20-pound cat...

Gov. Paul LePage is threatening to withhold all General Assistance funding for communities that ignore his administration’s new policy prohibiting undocumented immigrants from receiving state aid. LePage made the statement at the bottom of a two-page letter to municipalities throughout the state, effectively raising the stakes for Portland and other communities that have vowed to continue providing General Assistance to asylum seekers and other undocumented immigrants. Although the letter was dated Friday, several municipal officials said Tuesday morning they had not received a copy yet.For Portland, a total loss of state reimbursement would be a huge financial hit. In fiscal...

The LePage administration’s plan to stop funding General Assistance benefits for undocumented immigrants has many immigrant families worried that they will lose their apartments and that their children will go hungry, say leaders in the immigrant community in Greater Portland. “People will have nothing to feed their kids,” said Mia Ntahobari, 43, of Portland, who leads the Burundian Women’s Commission. “They just don’t know what to do.”Ntahobari discussed the rule change Thursday at the monthly meeting of the Maine Immigrant Women’s Network, which drew 20 women from almost every immigrant group in the city. Many were surprised to hear about...
