Gov. Paul LePage is threatening to withhold all General Assistance funding for communities that ignore his administrations new policy prohibiting undocumented immigrants from receiving state aid.
LePage made the statement at the bottom of a two-page letter to municipalities throughout the state, effectively raising the stakes for Portland and other communities that have vowed to continue providing General Assistance to asylum seekers and other undocumented immigrants. Although the letter was dated Friday, several municipal officials said Tuesday morning they had not received a copy yet.For Portland, a total loss of state reimbursement would be a huge financial hit. In fiscal year 2013, the city received $7.4 million from the state for the General Assistance program that provided emergency assistance to 4,376 individuals and families.
I expect the head of each municipality to communicate with [the Department of Health and Human Services] to certify in writing compliance with federal law, LePage wrote. If DHHS finds that a municipality fails to comply with the law, it will cut off all General Assistance reimbursement to that community.
LePages letter follows guidance sent out by DHHS advising communities that the administration planned to stop reimbursing municipalities for aid to people who are living in the U.S. illegally. LePage said a 1996 welfare-reform law prohibits states from offering General Assistance to undocumented immigrants unless states pass a state law specifically allowing it. The LePage administration says Maine has no such law.

Agreed. Pity the Dims have wised up and aren’t going to split their votes this time. His best poll number is 38%. Ugh.
Every state in the Union needs to do the same thing. If every state did that a lot of illegals would go home.
But this is in a three person race.
Getting rid of the deduction for state and local taxes would have a similar effect.
They are illegal immigrants, not "illegal" immigrants.
Only sociopaths/psychopaths would refuse to acknowledge the difference between legal and illegal activities.
Paul LePage is gov in OR? I worked with that man! :D
Oops! Maine! lLOL well my dad is from there, and Paul was from New England....maybe they are related!
Many would go home if we got rid of minimum wage.
Hurrah!
