Tensions ran high in the Philadelphia Police Department Sunday in the wake of an attempted assassination of an officer by a man allegedly claiming he did it "in the name of Islam" after an anonymous tip to officers on Saturday said the threat against police in the city is ongoing. According to a police report obtained by NBC10, an anonymous tipster told officers that, "the threat to police is not over" and that the man who shot Officer Jesse Hartnett is "part of a group that consists of three others," adding that alleged shooter "is not the most radical of...

It’s a tough job being a terrorist in Philadelphia where no matter what you do and say, no one in authority will believe you are one It has long rumoured that the tombstone of comedian W.C. Fields was engraved with the words, “Better here than Philadelphia.†That turned out to be an urban legend; all that is written on Fields’ gravestone is his name, date of birth, and the date he passed away. Former major league pitcher, Bo Belinsky, once said, “Philadelphia fans would boo funerals, an Easter egg hunt, a parade of armless war vets and the “Liberty Bell.â€...

When the news broke about the attempted assassination of a Philadelphia police officer yesterday, Ed covered the story and noted the gun control aspect of it. Philadelphia’s brand new mayor, Jim Kenney, was quick out of the gate to declare that this was a problem because of all the guns out on the streets. You’ll notice that he hasn’t had much more to say on that subject since it turned out that the gun in question had been stolen from a cop’s home and probably traded around among gang members like a baseball card. Perhaps in an effort to...

As easily as he slid into office with no qualifications for the post, Obama is falling from grace with fate and the voters. His dishonesty and incompetence are too patent. This week, no sooner had his relatively sparsely viewed presser ended and his clearly manufactured tears about gun violence dried, than his central argument -- that gun control, not fighting Islamic terrorism, should be our priority -- was exposed as nonsense. A thug, who had stolen a gun from a cop, used it in Philadelphia to try to assassinate a law enforcement officer. Echoing Obama Philadelphia's Democratic Mayor declared Jim...

The suspect, Edward Archer, 30, of Yeadon, has given a full confession, saying he did it in the name of Islam, according to CBS News. Sources also told Eyewitness News that Archer provided the confession in written form, and his police testimony was recorded on camera, as well. "This is absolutely one of the scariest things I've ever seen,"...

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A pregnant mother ran back into her burning row house to rescue her toddler Friday morning but died along with the child when smoke prevented their escape, officials said. The fire broke out around 4 a.m. in the city's Fairhill neighborhood. The woman initially escaped the blaze with other relatives but realized her toddler was missing, Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer said. She ran back inside to try to save the child. She was found with the child in her arms near a second-floor bedroom doorway after heavy smoke and flames prevented them from getting out, Sawyer...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The man who shot a policeman in Philadelphia and claimed to have pledged allegiance to Islamic State militants does not appear to be a mosque-going Muslim, a senior official at the largest U.S. Muslim advocacy group said. "At this hour, it does not appear that he was an observant or mosque-going Muslim" in the local community, said Jacob Bender, executive director of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. "I've called numerous imams and mosques to try to see if the name rings a bell with anyone. So far it hasn't," he told Reuters in...

A Bad Day for Preferred Narratives Noah Rothman Everything was going as planned at President Barack Obama's Thursday evening town hall on gun control when the unexpected occurred. A woman, a mother, a victim of sexual assault in college, someone who according to the overly simplistic center-left perspective should be sympathetic both to Democrats and stricter gun laws, stood up and defended firearm ownership. It was a moment that demonstrated the fragility of narratives and stereotyping. It exposed just how rapidly worldviews predicated on a naïve and one-dimensional typecasting - a trap into which political demographers easily fall - can...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — During a police press conference Friday afternoon, Mayor Jim Kenney stated that he believes the shooting of a Philadelphia police officer has “nothing to do with being a Muslim,†despite the suspect claiming he did it in the name of Islam.
-
He began by expressing his well-wishes for the officer who the Muslim man attempted to execute, but then spent the latter part of his statement distancing Islam from the shooter, who claimed he was carrying out the shooting for Islam. “In no way shape or form does anyone in this room believe that Islam or the teaching of Islam has anything to do with what you’ve seen on the screen,†said Mayor Kenney. “That is abhorrent. It’s just terrible and it does not represent this religion [Islam] in any way shape or form or any of its teachings,†he added....

Philadelphia high school senior Michael Moroz knew he was courting controversy when he wrote about race in the school newspaper, but he never expected death threats from classmates and strangers. Just before Christmas break, the 17-year-old wrote an opinion piece for the Central High school paper, the Centralizer. In it, he criticized the racially charged University of Missouri protests and opined that Michael Brown, the black teenager killed in 2014 by a white police officer in Ferguson, Mo., was "a delinquent" who was "at worst, justifiably killed, and at best, [was] a thug." The story hit the paper’s Facebook page...

Philadelphia's incoming mayor and organizers of the city's annual New Year's Day parade condemned expressions of hate, a day after some Mummers Parade participants mocked Caitlyn Jenner, were accused of harassing gays and painted their faces brown to portray Mexicans. Officials with the 116-year-old Mummers Parade pledged Saturday to cooperate with authorities looking into any complaints. They said in a statement that they will continue discussions on sensitivity, on what is considered satire and what is "over the line." They also said a member of one of the Friday parade's performance groups, the Finnegan NYB, has been banned from the...

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Philadelphia Mayor-elect Jim Kenney bristles at the label "progressive." "How about fairness?" he said in a recent interview. "When you know something's unfair, it's unfair. There are certain things that you have to acknowledge are the case and then work to fix them." Jim Kenney is not African-American but few white politicians are as comfortable discussing issues of inequality, mass incarceration and policing. The 57-year-old Irish-American, South Philly native's positions have earned him comparisons with New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.
