Maine Gov. Paul LePage, who endorsed Donald Trump for president last Friday, claimed on Wednesday that Ted Cruz, like his Canadian-born daughters, is ineligible to be the president. Asked on The Howie Carr Show why he endorsed Trump over Ted Cruz, LePage replied, “Very simple. It’s very simple. I am the most conservative governor that there is. He’s a first time senator. He’s not ready. Number one. Number two is I also have two daughters who were born in Canada. They had to be naturalized. They couldn’t be natural. And so, I have a question there.”

Republican Gov. Paul LePage recently began enforcing Maine’s volunteer and work requirements for food stamp SNAP recipients to keep their benefits. The end result was more than 9,000 non-disabled adults getting dropped from the program. The rules prevent adults who are not disabled and do not have dependents from receiving food stamps for more than three months, unless they work at least 20 hours a week, participate in a work-training program, or meet volunteer guidelines for 24 hours out of the month. Any one of those three getting met will not result in the loss of their SNAP food benefits.

Maine Governor Paul LePage on Monday revived legislation to crack down on welfare fraud, making good on a 2014 campaign promise to tighten restrictions on the state's public assistance programs and help speed the transition from "welfare to work." LePage's bill would require applicants for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families to apply for three jobs before receiving state aid, while prohibiting use of electronic benefit cards to purchase tobacco, liquor, tattoos, lottery tickets or to pay for bail.

AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul Le-Page’s administration is firing back at the federal government over its policy of putting welfare recipients’ photos on the cards used to access food stamps, which federal officials have warned could cause Maine to lose some program funding. In a Dec. 18 letter to the Food and Nutrition Service obtained by The Associated Press, Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew responded to several concerns raised by the agency last month and blasted officials for consistently putting up “roadblocks and barriers” in the state’s effort to prevent fraud and abuse.
