Maine Governor Paul LePage on Monday revived legislation to crack down on welfare fraud, making good on a 2014 campaign promise to tighten restrictions on the state's public assistance programs and help speed the transition from "welfare to work."

LePage's bill would require applicants for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families to apply for three jobs before receiving state aid, while prohibiting use of electronic benefit cards to purchase tobacco, liquor, tattoos, lottery tickets or to pay for bail.

Now, this sounds like typical political hype.

Apply for 3 jobs????? All that they will do is simply go through the phone book and list some businesses and that will be it. No proof, no followup, no actual contact.

That’s the way they do it for unemployment and that’s the way they will do it for welfare.

Absolutely nothing will change......but it sounds good.

Might Gov. LePage be someone to consider for VP?

Paul LePage has hinted he might challenge Angus King for the U.S. Senate in 2018.

I live in Maine and I voted for Paul LePage in 2010 and 2014. The man is one of a kind.

I like LePage too and hope he runs for Senate one day. More than a lot of other politicians, he understands that people need to work and earn a living.

The Maine POV, Sense of Humor, General Approach to Life in a Harsh Climate, Truculence in the Face of Massachusetts Tourists, Somali Jihadist Welfare Loafers, etc. does not make for a national candidate.

What the RNC and the MSM are looking for are really bland Republican candidates in the 'Ward Cleaver' mold. Someone like Mitt The Mormon Milquetoast who can gracefully make it look like a fight for a few rounds and then take a dive.

I have people call our business all the time here in Texas wanting to know if we have any vacancies. Have started telling them yes and require that they send in a resume. They always want to know rates, hours and fringe benefit package. Again repeat that they need to send in a resume. Have yet to receive any.

I’m much more a “hard ass” than you.

When they ask me the same questions I ask them to answer my question first: “What do you offer my business and how will you pay your own way and also produce a profit for the business.” One out of 25 will even attempt to answer the question.

Those are great questions but never fear - I can be a “hard ass” when necessary. Learned how when I supervised a longshoremen’s union crew in Louisiana loading soybeans for export years ago. Not too many women on the docks in those days and probably even not now. I just refuse to tell anyone whether we’re hiring or not unless they at least get off their duff and send a resume. If they do, I will at least take a look at them, maybe set up an interview, give them some tests and an interview and then maybe we talk. Sometimes turn it into a learning experience for the applicant. I have clients who are always on the search for clerical employees - sometimes we get lucky and find a diamond in the rough!
