I'm having more and more trouble keeping track of passwords on multiple sites. I would appreciate any advice someone might have on an app that would help me to do so securely and efficiently. I'm posting this because Freepers have an astonishingly wide range of knowledge and have helped me a lot in the past. Here's what I'd like: Android app that allows me to store all passwords and usernames securely, behind a single master password. Easy, preferably automatic, syncing to my PC and the cloud. Access to the stored info by phone, PC or by any computer or other...

WASHINGTON – People who have accounts on the enrollment website for President Obama's signature health care law are being told to change their passwords following an administration-wide review of the government's vulnerability to the confounding Heartbleed Internet security flaw. Senior administration officials said there is no indication that the HealthCare.gov site has been compromised and the action is being taken out of an abundance of caution. The government's Heartbleed review is ongoing, the officials said, and users of other websites may also be told to change their passwords in the coming days, including those with accounts on the popular WhiteHouse.gov...

An interesting simulation of 1962 America. A bit hokey, and also that the simulated broadcast comes from Dayton, OH, home of Wright-Patterson Air Force base, and would have been one of the first places on the mark for a soviet nuclear attack, I believe it echoes the times.

A Minnesota school district has agreed to pay $70,000 to settle a lawsuit that claimed school officials violated a student's constitutional rights by viewing her Facebook and email accounts without permission. The lawsuit, filed in 2012 by the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota, alleged that Riley Stratton, now 15, was given detention after posting disparaging comments about a teacher's aide on her Facebook page, even though she was at home and not using school computers. The ACLU also said administrators viewed her online conversations between the then-Minnewaska Area Middle School sixth-grader and a boy because of a complaint the...

Usernames and passwords of some of Yahoo's email customers have been stolen and used to gather personal information about people those Yahoo mail users have recently corresponded with, the company said Thursday. Yahoo didn't say how many accounts have been affected. Yahoo is the second-largest email service worldwide, after Google's Gmail, according to the research firm comScore. There are 273 million Yahoo mail accounts worldwide, including 81 million in the United States.
  • Air Force Swears: Our Nuke Launch Code Was Never '00000000'

For nearly a decade, an awkward debate has raged about the U.S. military's nuclear force: Did top Air Force officials really choose "00000000" as a code that could enable the launch of a nuclear missile? Ten years later, in a document obtained by Foreign Policy, the U.S. military told Congress that it never happened. But is the Pentagon telling the truth? Bruce Blair, a nuclear security expert and former launch officer , says no. Blair, now a scholar and author at Princeton University, first raised the idea in a piece published in 2004. He accused the Air Force of circumventing...

**SNIP** So let's recap, if you lose your password you have to call a phone line that's always busy. I expected more from our first technologically savvy presidential administration. Odd---the President can always find a way to get those email blasts to me to ask for money but his crack IT team couldn't retrieve my ID & log in information in a timely manner. Go figure. After a few minutes of stewing, it turned out that the healthcare.gov did have one saving grace that helped me jog my memory.

But the most significant news to come out of the event is a new security feature on the iPhone 5S called Touch ID, which is an app that allows users to use their fingerprint to access information in their phone. The new function is essentially a fingerprint identity sensor in the home button on the phone that enables users to unlock their device. However, it can also be used as a substitute for passwords when making purchases, including in Apple's iTunes Store. "Your fingerprint is one of the best passwords in the world. It's always with you," said Dan Riccio,...

New technique takes password security to new depths No matter the measures one takes to protect a password, whether it’s storing it to memory, thumb drive, or a carefully hidden piece of paper in a hardly-ever-used book, it is still possible to get a Jack Bauer-like character to force that person to reveal the password or its location. That is, until now. Researchers have discovered a technique in which a person can store information in the subconscious part of their brain in such a way that it is literally impossible to consciously disclose it — no matter how hard the...

Kimberly Hester, a grade school teacher's aide in Michigan, was fired for refusing to hand over her Facebook password to her supervisors. Hester posted a picture of a co-workers' shoes and pants bunched around her ankles on Facebook in April 2011 with the caption, "Thinking of you." She posted the picture in jest, but a parent who's on her Facebook friend list saw the image and reported it to Frank Squires Elementary where Hester was employed, prompting the investigation. Teachers have gotten in trouble for Facebook status messages before, but in Hester's case, it's her refusal to hand over her...

A teacher's aide was suspended after she refused to let the school district she worked access her Facebook profile. Officials at the Frank Squires Elementary School in Cassopolis, Michigan insisted they check Kimberly Hester's account last year after she posted a picture of a co-worker wearing pants around the ankles and a pair of shoes. The woman is trying to take legal action against the school now that she has been put on unpaid leave. She told WSBT-TV: 'I did nothing wrong. And I would not, still to this day, let them in my Facebook. And I don't think it's...

Cyberspace has become an indispensible component of everyday life for all Americans.  We have all witnessed how the application and use of this technology has increased exponentially over the years. Cyberspace includes the networks in our homes, businesses, schools, and our Nation’s critical infrastructure.  It is where we exchange information, buy and sell products and services, and enable many other types of transactions across a wide range of sectors. But not all components of this technology have kept up with the pace of growth.  Privacy and security require greater emphasis moving forward; and because of this, the technology that has brought many...

Ever since Google disclosed in January that Internet intruders had stolen information from its computers, the exact nature and extent of the theft has been a closely guarded company secret. But a person with direct knowledge of the investigation now says that the losses included one of Google’s crown jewels, a password system that controls access by millions of users worldwide to almost all of the company’s Web services, including e-mail and business applications.
