LINDEN — Rahway mayoral candidate James Devine was found guilty tonight of stealing more than $20 worth of items from a city grocery store. Municipal Court Judge Cassandra Corbett found that Devine intentionally concealed two bags of prewashed lettuce, a protein supplement and hair conditioner on a July 19, 2013, trip to the local ShopRite without planning to pay for them. “I do find that Mr. Devine…did conceal the items… and so I therefore find Mr. Devine guilty of shoplifting,” she said. RAHWAY — A longtime Democratic operative from Union County has responded to the Wednesday shooting of a congressman by calling for a “hunt” of Republicans. James Devine posted several messages on Facebook and Twitter following the Alexandra, Virginia, shooting of U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise and several others by a gunman with a history of violence and of making online rantings against Republican officials and their policies.

A man was beaten to death while walking his dog in New Jersey, prosecutors said. Viktor Yashchyshyk, 51, was walking his dog and talking to his girlfriend in Old Bridge about a block from his home when he was knocked unconscious, police said. His skull was fractured, jaw broken and he was missing teeth, Middlesex County prosecutors said. Police say Earl Allayne Jr, a twenty-year-old black male, attacked Yashchyshyn at random and critically injured him.

Chris Christie touted New Jersey employment gains on Monday during a Statehouse news conference at which he also warned voters to choose his successor carefully or risk undoing the economic progress made during his nearly eight-year tenure. TRENTON -- Former "Saturday Night Live" star Joe Piscopo will not run for governor of New Jersey, and will instead endorse the Republican front-runner, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno. "We are going to support Kim," Piscopo told NJ Advance Media on Wednesday shortly before going on his morning radio show on 970-AM to make the announcement. New Jersey millennials may be sad to hear that the Garden State isn’t the best place to be. A new Wallethub study found that New Jersey is ranked 40 out of 51 states for quality of life among millennials. When asked why New Jersey was ranked so low, Wallethub stated that housing difficulties were a key factor. “Forty-five percent of millennials are still living with their parents, that is what really dragged New Jersey down,” said Jill Gonzalez, a analyst for Wallethub.

Sen. Robert Menendez ongoing corruption case could upend the New Jersey Democrat’s reelection bid in 2018, with the longtime politician scheduled to go to court this fall. Jersey City is mourning the deaths of Russell Maffei and Marie Tauro, two longtime fixtures on the local political scene who were killed in North Bergen last night.
