  • The anti-iPhone: World's simplest mobile that only lets you make calls

You can't access the internet. And it doesn't have a camera or games you can play. In fact, this new mobile phone doesn't even let you send text messages. The designers of 'John's Phone' have created a device that has only one function: it lets you make calls. Hailed as the world's simplest phone, it is designed to be a tongue-in-cheek 'basic backlash' by targeting users who do not want the flashy features of next-generation models.

Microsoft Corp. knows the cell phone world is where it's happening, and it's determined to be a part of it. After years of declining sales of phones based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile software, the company is starting with a fresh slate — a completely new operating system for phones. The new handsets will go up against Apple Inc.'s highly popular iPhone and the expanding number of phones running on Google Inc.'s Android operating system. The first phone with Windows Phone 7 will be the Samsung Focus, which hits AT&T Inc. stores Nov. 8 for $200 with a two-year contract requirement,...
  • Steve Ballmer Only Gets Half His Potential Bonus Because Of Microsoft's Continued Failure In Mobile

Someone's paying attention at Microsoft. At least enough to only grant CEO Steve Ballmer half of his maximum bonus this year, because of Microsoft's continued failure in the mobile industry, and because tablet computers are threatening Microsoft's core Windows business. As Reuters reports, "a discussion of Ballmer's pay in the company's annual proxy filing also referred to the 'unsuccessful launch of the Kin phone, loss of market share in the company's mobile phone business, and the need for the company to pursue innovations to take advantage of new form factors'." You may recall that Microsoft canceled its Kin mobile phone...
  • Let's Be Honest: Microsoft's Mobile Business Is A Fantasy (Windows 7 Mobile Business is flawed)

Everyone's excited about the forthcoming Windows Phone 7 software, which Microsoft bulls are hoping will mark Microsoft's return to relevance in the mobile industry. Reviews of the software have been good, and the only major complaint is that it's a year behind the rest of the industry--namely Apple's iPhone OS and Google's Android. In the rapidly evolving smartphone world, being a year behind is a recipe for trouble. If Microsoft focused huge resources on the problem, however, it might be able to close the gap. But Microsoft actually has a bigger problem in mobile, one that threatens to turn Windows...

Until now, only users of Google's tragically short lived Nexus One had access to Android 2.2 (codenamed Froyo), but according to a communiqué from Verizon, the original Droid will be getting the update next week. This is big news for a large segment of the Android user base as the Droid was a very popular phone.  Android 2.2 brings some useful new features to the platform. For instance, Google's new Jun-in-time compiler speeds up applications dramatically, and the browsers new JavaScript V8 engine makes web pages render much faster. We're going to be very interested to see how Motorola handles...

Motorola's eagerly anticipated Droid X smartphone is expected to hit the hot summer streets in just a few hours. But don't plan on hacking, rooting or modding the Android-powered device anytime soon.
In addition to locking down the smartphone with an encrypted bootloader, Motorola has instructed its obedient Droid to brick itself if the kernel, bootloader or ROM becomes noticeably compromised.

A mobile phone company has suspended the number 0888 888 888 – after every single person assigned to it died in the last 10 years. The first owner Vladimir Grashnov – the former CEO of Bulgarian mobile phone company Mobitel which issued the number – died of cancer in 2001 aged just 48. Despite a spotless business record there were persistent rumours that his cancer had been caused by a business rival using radioactive poisoning. The number then passed to Bulgarian mafia boss, Konstantin Dimitrov, who was gunned down in 2003 by a lone assassin in the Netherlands during a...

I am stuck at the airport and I have this new low end model Motorola phone for T-Mobile. The phone has no model number on it but does have a green case with white face plate and black surrounding the screen if that helps to ID it. The problem is as soon as I turn it on it says 'good bye' and shuts down again. I have tried taking the battery out several times to try and break this cycle. Any suggestions?

While rumors of a possible Verizon-compatible iPhone in 2010 persist, one analyst has predicted that Apple will instead bring the iPhone to another GSM-based carrier in the U.S.: T-Mobile. In a note to investors released this week, Doug Reid of Thomas Weisel Partners said his firm believes that T-Mobile, and not Verizon, will be the beneficiary when Apple's exclusive agreement with AT&T expires next year... AT&T's exclusive contract with Apple for the iPhone is due to expire in 2010... While the iPhone in its current iteration is compatible with T-Mobile's network, it is not capable of connecting to its high-speed...

The leftists are marketing "Credo Mobile" against AT&T and Verizon. Their advertisement asserts that AT&T and Verizon "support politicians opposed to real healthcare reform, like a single-payer system or public option" and that they "fund anti-environment politicians". Who knew? If that's true, support AT&T and Verizon!AlterNet's promotional e-mail tells its followers to "Join the mobile phone company that's fighting for a robust public option in healthcare reform-and hasn't given a cent to Joe Lieberman."

Original in German; here's a Babelfish translation: T-mobile had today a country wide loss in the portable radio net. Speaking and SMS services were concerned. The cause of the today's disturbance in the portable radio enterprise of T-mobile is recognized. Reason was a software fault in the so-called Home location register (HLR). The HLR is responsible to make a connection between portable radio station and the associated portable radio number. After putting the system back the first parts of the net are again available since approx. 19:00 clock. That can lead isolated to an overload in the net. We assume...
  • Solution to World's Pirate Problem May Come From Mobile

The solution to the world's pirate problem may be made in Mobile. The dramatic showdown between the U.S. Navy and a group of Somalian pirates ended badly for the buccaneers, but military experts say it also demonstrated that the Navy is ill-equipped to deal with a growing threat to global commerce. That's chiefly because the Navy lacks the sort of fast, flexible vessel that can chase pirates where they roam, the so-called "green" waters within 100 or so miles of shore. Enter Austal USA's littoral combat ship, a swift, agile and lethal vessel that may be a pirate's worst nightmare....
