ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) - At Archway Memorial Chapel in Hazelwood, owner Kenneth McGhee had nothing but good things to say about the Patriot Guard Riders, a volunteer motorcycle group that escorts funeral processions for fallen service members. "Very kind people, very diligent," McGhee said. "They are very dignified and very proud of the service they provide for fellow veterans." McGhee was particularly distressed to learn that a 64-year-old Patriot Guard Rider was struck by a vehicle and killed in south St. Louis County Monday while escorting a procession that originated at his funeral home. "Until we learned the...

Attorney General Loretta Lynch issued a nine-page letter through her civil-rights division to municipal and state judges around the United States, warning them to ease off prosecution of criminals, particularly those of minority status, or else face loss of federal funding. Specifically, she wants the 6,500 municipal level courts in the country to offer community service in lieu of jail time, or provide more “amnesty days” to those with outstanding warrants so they can pay a fee instead of serving behind bars, the New York Post reported. The ‘Stop Hillary’ campaign is on fire! Join the surging response to this...

A Missouri court has struck down parts of a law meant to address concerns raised after the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson. A Cole County judge ruled Monday it is unconstitutional to limit St. Louis-area municipalities to less traffic ticket and court fine revenues than cities elsewhere in the state. The judge also struck down requirements for those cities’ police departments, including written use-of-force policies and procedures for reporting police stops. …

So, after the whole mess surrounding the poop swastika; instances of harassment that were allegedly racially-motivated, though unverifiable since they occurred off campus; and a professor who was charged with assaulting a student reporter at protests over said events has a caused a budget shortfall at the University of Missouri. I know, totally shocking, right? (via Daily Caller): The University of Missouri (MU) is losing about 1500 students and is facing a huge $32 million budget shortfall four months after it attracted national attention as the site of massive race-based campus protests.“I am writing to you today to confirm...

The school took action this week on two diversity demands, hiring a chief diversity officer and requiring students to complete diversity-themed courses. Still reeling from last year’s student protests, the University of Missouri took action this week on two more diversity demands, hiring a chief diversity officer and requiring students to complete diversity-themed courses. The College of Arts and Science at Mizzou announced Wednesday that undergraduates will now have to complete three credit-hours of “diversity intensive” (DI) courses in order to graduate, saying the courses will focus on “understanding differing social groups” and “will explore at least one form of...

Top executives from some of the St. Louis area’s largest companies say Missouri’s proposed religious freedom bill could have a devastating impact on the state’s economy. Leaders from Monsanto, MasterCard and other firms joined Gov. Jay Nixon Friday at the St. Louis Regional Chamber to express opposition to Senate Joint Resolution 39. The bill survived a 37-hour filibuster by Senate Democrats. If approved by the Legislature, it would go to voters. The proposal calls for amending the state Constitution to create religious protections for some businesses objecting to gay marriage. The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced its opposition...

Kansas City cops are not horsing around. A woman suspected of striking “Dan” the police horse during last week’s Donald Trump protest in Missouri was arrested Friday night. In an attempt to spook a member of the city’s mounted patrol, April Foster, 29, allegedly yelled at the horse as its officer pushed through a crowd of protesters. She then slapped it with an open hand, according to the Kansas City Star.

Here in Columbia, the University of Missouri homecoming parade is a big deal, so arriving early to grab a spot last October was crucial. Getting out the door with a young family on a Saturday morning however, can be a bit of a struggle and my thoughts that morning were dominated by the usual worries of anyone rushing out to the door to a much-anticipated event. Grateful to have found a spot that would accommodate us just moments before the parade began, we were frustrated when the candy throwing and band marching unexpectedly stopped.

The Kansas City, Kan., man accused of killing five people in a two-state shooting spree earlier this month has a long, documented history of violent behavior. The first hints of a volatile temper for Pablo Serrano-Vitorino surfaced in 1998, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records. At least twice since then, Serrano-Vitorino has faced domestic violence-related charges, most recently last June when he was accused of punching his brother in the face during a disturbance in Kansas City, Kan. In 2003, he pointed a rifle at the mother of his three children and threatened to kill her, according to the...

Rep. Kevin Yoder is taking steps to find out how Pablo Serrano-Vitorino, the man charged with four murders in Kansas City, Kansas, and one murder in Montgomery County, Missouri, was in the United States after being deported years before. On Thursday, Yoder was on a call with Immigration and Customs Enforcement with Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer. Both sought answers to how Serrano-Vitorino was able to slip through the cracks in spite of multiple encounters with police. The Mexican national had a criminal record and was ticketed for not having a driver's license. Local immigration attorney Michael Sharma-Crawford said, "He never necessarily...

The lawsuit was brought against Ferguson by the department after the city initially rejected some of the terms proposed in an agreement put forth to improve the city's police department and court practices, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. However, the Ferguson City Council finally approved the Justice proposal Tuesday, citing a letter from Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, as a reason why. In the letter, Gupta assured city officials that the projected costs of the proposal had been overstated.
  • Plurality Rules (Don’t confuse Donald Trump’s slim margins with a sign of weakness)

A bit of conventional wisdom was settling in on Wednesday morning that though Donald Trump enjoyed a good “Super Tuesday II,” with victories in the Northern Mariana Islands, Florida, North Carolina, Illinois, and—tentatively—Missouri, he may not have done well enough to ward off a contested convention. John Kasich’s win in his home state, Ohio, deprived Trump of a juicy 66 delegates, and he has still not shown that he can claim a state with anything greater than a plurality of the popular vote. By the Associated Press’ latest estimate, he’ll need to win 54 percent of the remaining delegates to...

The Missouri GOP released a tentative delegate allocation on Wednesday after the state's Tuesday Republican primary. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump received 37 delegates, followed by rival Ted Cruz who received 15 delegates, according to a reporter from St. Louis Public Radio. According to the Associated Press, Trump received 40.9 percent of the vote in Missouri, followed closely by Cruz who got 40.7 percent of the vote. Cruz could still call for a recount, given the extremely close margin separating him and Trump.Bernie Sanders, likewise trailing Hillary Clinton by two-tenths of a point, could also ask for a recount. Trump...

The University of Missouri's Board of Curators has rejected an appeal filed by Melissa Click, the former assistant professor fired last month after she'd gained notoriety last fall for her role in protests on Mizzou's campus. The board's unanimous decision to reject Click's appeal means her termination has been upheld and she has no further recourse through the university to get her job back. Click had been on paid suspension pending her appeal since the board fired her in February. In announcing the board's action Tuesday morning, board chairwoman Pamela Henrickson said Click has been treated fairly throughout the process.

It appears that GOP frontrunner Donald Trump slightly edged out Sen. Ted Cruz in Missouri on Tuesday night. Trump took 40.7 percent of the votes in the Show Me State with 100 percent of the votes tallied. Sen. Ted Cruz is close behind at 40.6 percent–down by approximately 1,700 votes. With this small a margin, Cruz could potentially ask for a recount. However, since Missouri is not a winner-take-all primary, the recount fight may not yield many new delegates even if he is ultimately declared the state’s winner...
