Speak out on health careFriday, July 31, 2009 Edition Published: Tuesday, July 28, 2009 3:40 PM CDT It’s generally accepted that some kind of health-care reform is needed. But what kind and when? Some on the right are leery about government mandates and public options and fear the possible cost to taxpayers—and the possibility of expanding the use of tax funds for abortions. Some on the left are concerned that the government is not actively considering a single-payer option but is instead choosing to work primarily through the current private-insurance system. The president, meanwhile, is warning that the current system...

The organized Jewish community's first official meeting with US President Barack Obama late Monday was set to include more liberal organizations than in years past, which groups on both sides saw as indicative of the White House's interest in magnifying their voices. The new J Street lobby and Americans for Peace Now made the final cut of a pared-down list that kept off traditional participants Zionist Organization of America, the Lubavitch movement and the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, all of which are on the more conservative part of the spectrum. "They're looking to legitimize the more progressive parts...

The meeting this week between Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will speak volumes as to where the United States will officially stand in relation to its long history of support for Israel. Perhaps we are now at a point and place in history where the United States will no longer reach back to the Bible in its understanding the miraculous fulfillment of prophecy that occurred.

The global financial crisis will dominate the agenda at this week's Summit of the Americas in Trinidad, which also serves as U.S. President Barack Obama's coming-out party in the region. After eight years of George W. Bush, there is excitement among the 33 heads of state and government, most of whom are meeting Mr. Obama for the first time, as well as hope for a new era of civility and co-operation. For example, Dr Eugenie Scott of the staunchly anticreationist National Center for Science Education (NCSE) revealed their agenda when she said: “ … I would describe myself as a humanist or a nontheist. I have found that the most effective allies for evolution are people of the faith community. One clergyman with a backward collar is worth two biologists at a school board meeting any day! … What we [such clergy and atheists] have in common is that we want to see evolution taught in the public schools … .”4
