Mayor Michael Bloomberg ignited a firestorm of debate with his proposal to ban super-size sugary drinks in New York City. Critics bashed his nanny-statism, but supporters like first lady Michelle Obama hailed his courage. Nationally, just 24 percent of American adults think the ban is a good idea, while 65 percent oppose it. This response is similar to the high level of opposition found for efforts to impose so-called "sin taxes" on soda and junk food. People never like it when the government picks winners and losers, and they are especially resistant to having the government determine what foods we...

UFT President Mike Mulgrew was caught “in flagrante delicto” with a guidance counselor at William Grady HS, where he taught before becoming the union’s boss, a bombshell lawsuit charges. The accusation that Mulgrew was seen having sex with a co-worker in a woodshop at the vocational school, and that it was hushed up, comes in a rambling 73-page suit filed in Brooklyn federal court last week by Andrew Ostrowsky, a math teacher at Frank Sinatra HS of the Arts in Manhattan. Ostrowsky, 35, names Mayor Bloomberg, Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott, Mulgrew and the UFT, claiming the teachers union conspired with...

Mayor Bloomberg practiced his version of verbal jujitsu Wednesday, mangling a greeting to Muslim leaders at a Ramadan gathering with "shalom alaikum." Hizzoner was shooting for "salaam alaikum" - the traditional Arabic "peace to you" greeting. "He just got a little confused," one witness said. Imam Omar Abunamous of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York said it was an understandable mistake for the Jewish mayor. "Well, it's common to both religions," Abunamous said. "They are the same thing. The same idea." The mayor frequently butchers names and words, and he often ends each press announcement with a cringeworthy pronunciation...

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf has advertised the controversial Ground Zero mosque as an Islamic outreach to the community, a cultural center open and intended to unify all religions. Today, he still stands by that assertion, even as his proposed mosque continues to exact the opposite effect before it’s even built. Now, harsh critics, such as Chairman of the Religious Freedom Coalition, William Murray, are presented with even more perplexing information in the form of Sharif El-Gamal (pictured), the mysterious developer behind the mosque. Reportedly a waiter by profession who suddenly “came into” the kind of money to spearhead a $100...

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is like the Angelina Jolie to President Obama's Brad Pitt. So unpopular is he, every time the president is seen with another economically savvy individual, people start to get excited that the pair might finally be breaking up. So it follows that, after Mayor Bloomberg told reporters that he and Obama spent much of their intimate golf session in Martha's Vineyard last week discussing the economy, "Page Six" says they're hearing "whispers" that the president asked the mayor about taking over as Treasury secretary. "It's been the focus of a lot of discussion," one Democrat, who...

By Stephen Prothero, Special to CNN In a commentary on the shrill Republican silence in the face of the "Obama is a Muslim" nonsense, Slate’s John Dickerson wrote that "with so much traffic on the low road in American politics, you'd imagine a politician or two might take the high road simply to beat the congestion." Well, New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg continues to take the road less...

Hudson New York reported: An identified group with unknown sponsors has purchased building steps away from where the WorldTrade Center once stood — to turn it into potentially one of the largest New York City mosques. At the moment the building, the old Burlington Coat Factory, already serves as a mini-mosque: an iron grill lifts every Friday afternoon for a little known Imam leading prayers a few yards...

“If I had to guess, twenty five cents, this would be exactly that,” Bloomberg said. “Homegrown maybe a mentally deranged person or someone with a political agenda that doesn’t like the health care bill or something. It could be anything.”

[Scroll down 1/2 page to article]...If the configuration of the propane gas cylinders and gasoline containers in the back of a SUV sounds familiar, it should. In an article that was published on this web site on 29 June 2007, we warned that the operational tactics of Islamic terrorists of the London attempted bombings outside of a night club would be used on U.S. soil, and identified the crowded streets of New York as a prime target.

The Bloomberg-funded Mayors Against Illegal Guns announced today it sent a six-question survey to both John McCain and Barack Obama focued on "common sense steps necessary to fix the nation’s broken background check system" that the group endorsed during its national summit in April. This isn't the first time the coalition has sought to influence the presidential contests that its benefactor once considered joining. It ran pint ads in New Hampshire and Iowa newspapers in advance of the primary and caucuses, respectively, and also aired a TV spot (in which the mayor, playing the role of an "undecided voter" was...

New Jersey Mayor Continues Trend: Leaves Bloomberg’s Anti-Gun Coalition Monday, July 09, 2007 Fairfax, VA - Oldsmans Township, NJ Mayor Harry Moore has resigned his membership from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun coalition, continuing the trend of mayors jaded by Bloomberg’s focus on gun control rather than crime control. “I applaud Mayor Harry Moore for having the courage to quit this anti-gun coalition once he recognized Mike Bloomberg true intentions,” said Chris W. Cox, National Rifle Association (NRA)’s chief lobbyist. “Mayors across the country have come to realize the coalition is nothing more than a front...
