Bloomberg Tries Again On Gun Control (6 questions to Obama & McCain)
NY Daily News ^ | August 6, 2008 | Elizabeth Benjamin

Posted on 08/08/2008 1:19:57 PM PDT by neverdem

The Bloomberg-funded Mayors Against Illegal Guns announced today it sent a six-question survey to both John McCain and Barack Obama focued on "common sense steps necessary to fix the nation’s broken background check system" that the group endorsed during its national summit in April.

This isn't the first time the coalition has sought to influence the presidential contests that its benefactor once considered joining.

It ran pint ads in New Hampshire and Iowa newspapers in advance of the primary and caucuses, respectively, and also aired a TV spot (in which the mayor, playing the role of an "undecided voter" was prominently featured) in key primary states like Pennsylvania.

The coalition sent a similar survey to the primary candidates, but didn't get much in the way of a response. Now that the field has tightened to two - between whom the billionaire mayor has yet to choose - perhaps they'll have better luck.

The survey questions appear after the jump.

!) As President, will you commit to push for the passage of legislation in Congress to require background checks on all gun sales at gun shows in 2009?

2) As President, would you support passage of S.1237/H.R.2074 or other similar legislation to close this Terror Gap in federal laws?

3) As President, would you support passage of H.R.6676 or other similar legislation that would require that people behind the counter at gun stores pass the same background check as their customers?

4) As President, would you support passage of H.R.6664 or other similar legislation to put an end to the practice of allowing gun dealers whose licenses have been revoked for selling guns illegally to continue selling guns in their inventory without doing background checks?

5) As President, would you eliminate the Tiahrt Amendment crime gun trace data restrictions in your budgets for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF)?

6) Will your first proposed budget include full funding of the NICS Improvement Amendments Act of 2007?

Our fine socialists are hard at work, continuing their efforts to disarm the law-abiding public under the ruse of crime prevention, as if criminals obey laws.

How stupid do they think we are, looking at their efforts to negate the Second Amendment and to sooth their Marxist paranoia about an armed citizenry??

1) background checks

I'll trust background checks when I can trust the checker to dump the records.

That means never.

Every one of these "common sense provisions" has its very own hidden agenda.

Gun control has cleared the way for seven major genocides since 1915, in which governments gone bad murdered 56,000,000 persons, including millions of children. – Aaron Zelman, Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership

The background check is not broken and works very well.

Private sales should not have paperwork and background checks. The present law says gun owners should not sell or give a gun to people one has reason to know are not eligible to have a firearm, plus provides penalties.

Anyone who works in a gun store is very likely to be a regular buyer and therefore undergoes the usual background checks. Most stores do a check on hiring a gun counter sales person. Another law isn’t needed.

You sure are right:

Oh, it it "question and answer" time? Excellent. I've got one. Mr. Bloomberg, do you and your "Mayors Against Illegal Guns" cohort Tom Menino support gun control laws that allow wealthy, upper-class (read: politically connected) whites living in your cities to exercise their second amendment rights, while denying the same to lower-income residents of color? Why, yes, you do...

From what I’ve read of both candidates, they will both answer yes to all 6 questions.

Somehow, I ended up without a dog in this (election) fight.

Revoking the Tirhart (sp?) ammendment.

Good one Mr. Bloomberg, you common filthy city rat!

You mean the one you violated and broke the law to get your grubby hands on trace data for your ILLEGAL raids.

Go spend your millions, people don’t think the way you do and we are NOT sheeple. See the flag below posted by a fellow member.

ERRRRR, I hate that guy, almost as much as I hate Pelosi!

I'll trust background checks when I can trust the checker to dump the records.

I would also have to trust that they would never be used to deny arms to people who have a Second Amendment right to them. Since the government already uses them for that purpose, it's pretty clear how far I trust that.

The 2 candidates are night and day on gun control. If you really think that about McCain, you know nothing about the man.

If I were to run for mayor of NYC...

Complete 180º turnaround from Bloomberg. I’d try suspending gun laws with an Executive Order, and get NYC Reps in the NY House and Senate to repeal the Sullivan Law and every other POS gun law on the books in the state. I’d try to make it like Utah ASAP, then maybe go for Vermont or Alaska.

While he won’t try to take EVERYTHING away like Obama, McCain has indicated his support for all the items in the list.

Which will just set us up for someone else to take them all away.

Go check out his record at GOA. I know they don’t like him, but their rhetoric doesn’t match his votes. Based on that record, I think he’d go our way on 3 of those for sure, and maybe 1 more.

Not to get off topic but I have an AR 15. I’m thinking of putting a Trijicon sight on it. Any comments?
