Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is like the Angelina Jolie to President Obama's Brad Pitt. So unpopular is he, every time the president is seen with another economically savvy individual, people start to get excited that the pair might finally be breaking up. So it follows that, after Mayor Bloomberg told reporters that he and Obama spent much of their intimate golf session in Martha's Vineyard last week discussing the economy, "Page Six" says they're hearing "whispers" that the president asked the mayor about taking over as Treasury secretary.
"It's been the focus of a lot of discussion," one Democrat, who may or may not be the mayor's hairstylist, told the Post. "He's very well-liked and well-respected on Wall Street." Unlike some people.
Poor Tim Geithner. Rumors of this sort must be hard on him. Though we also feel a twinge of pity for Bloomberg, who likely has no intention of leaving his hard-won third term, but will nonetheless have to suck in his paunch over the next few weeks, lest he be accused of having a baby bump.

Most people don't realize that Bloomberg is a salesman, not a financier. He made his money by paying smart people to build a product that he could market in negotiated transactions.
He is not an economist or an experienced proprietary trader: he owns a software company, not a hedge fund.
. . . wow if Blumberg can do for the US what he’s done to New York he’ll fit right in .
Good spot for Bloomy...probably less than a two year job....
That’s one way to get Bloomy out of NYC...since he’s canned term limits for himself.
RE: wow if Blumberg can do for the US what hes done to New York hell fit right in .
Is this good or bad for the country?
As a multi-billionaire Bloomy’s who built a tech company in finance, Bloomy’s got plenty of financial cred. (Far more than your usual clueless economist!)
Of course, Bloomberg could only carry NYC in a National presidential race, but that doesn't register in his constrained little world.
They might just be right about Obama, Geithner, and Bloomberg, but they don't have a clue about Brangelina. She's not unpopular, and there isn't much real speculation about whether Brad is going to find someone new.
It's all a media creation to sell magazines. If one of them goes leave, it will be Angelina.
There is a lot of talk about whether Brad and Jen will get back together, but that's also been created by the media. They won't.
But as for the politics, just about anybody would be better than Geithner. The reason he's lasted this long is because Obama doesn't want to be seen as admitting that he made a mistake.
This might explain Bloomy’s otherwise inexplicable support of the GZM when NoooYawkers are so much against it.
Sheesh. Solid reporting there, ace.
To people who don't understand finance, absolutely.
Again, Bloomberg is a salesman - specifically the kind of intelligent salesman who is able to anticipate the needs of a very wealthy clientele.
It's a wonderful skillset to have, but it isn't the skillset for the job.
Ya remember John Snow’s turn at the job?
Taken a look at little Timmy’s credentials?
RE: as possible springboard for 2016.
Bloomberg is 68 this year. Does he really want to be President at age 74?
By the way, I don’t think Bloomy goes for Treasury at all. It’ll take Biden’s spot for 2012 to get him on board.
RE: Again, Bloomberg is a salesman
Maybe that’s what Obambi wants — a salesman. Someone who can convincingly sell his snake oil... what better person than an experienced salesman who used to be a Republican ?
All three men have very different backgrounds. Snow’s job in private industry necessitated familiarity with commodity markets and the structure of interest rates in a relatively hands-on way. Geithner is purely an academic.
The answer is YES. His ego demands it.
Geithner calls himself an economist, but his undergrad degree is in government and Asian studies and his only graduate degree is an MA in ‘international economics and East Asian studies’. So he’s not legitimately an economist—or in any way an ‘academic’—he’s a pure, lifelong bureaucrat.
What is this bit dismissing Bloomberg as ‘a salesman’? He was a partner at Salomon Brothers and headed their equity trading.
He’s also got a solid education with an undergraduate EE degree and an MBA from Harvard. He was a visionary building his company in a tough, tough market.
