New Jersey Mayor Continues Trend: Leaves Bloomberg’s Anti-Gun Coalition

Monday, July 09, 2007

Fairfax, VA - Oldsmans Township, NJ Mayor Harry Moore has resigned his membership from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun coalition, continuing the trend of mayors jaded by Bloomberg’s focus on gun control rather than crime control.

“I applaud Mayor Harry Moore for having the courage to quit this anti-gun coalition once he recognized Mike Bloomberg true intentions,” said Chris W. Cox, National Rifle Association (NRA)’s chief lobbyist. “Mayors across the country have come to realize the coalition is nothing more than a front group for gun control.”

Bloomberg’s anti-gun coalition opposes the Shelby-Tiahrt Amendment in Congress that is supported by rank-and-file law enforcement across the country. The National Fraternal Order of Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Department of Justice and NRA are united in wanting to keep trace information in the hands of law enforcement. These law enforcement organizations have expressed concern that giving this information to politicians will compromise on-going investigations and endanger the safety of law enforcement officers.

"Mayor Bloomberg has wasted taxpayer money jet-setting across the country, holding media events and spreading a load of propaganda to other mayors," Cox continued. " Bloomberg’s own actions prove that protecting law enforcement officers is not at the top of his agenda."

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America’s oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group. Four million members strong, NRA continues its mission to uphold Second Amendment rights and to advocate enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the military.

SAF LAUDS NJ MAYOR FOR ‘BLUNT HONESTY’ IN EXIT FROM BLOOMBERG GROUP

For Immediate Release:   7/10/2007

BELLEVUE, WA – Applauding the blunt honesty of Oldmans Township, NJ Mayor Harry Moore in his resignation letter to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the Second Amendment Foundation today said Moore’s candor should be an inspiration to everyone who opposes political demagoguery. Mr. Moore is the sixth mayor to quit the coalition.

“Regrettably,” Moore wrote in his letter to Bloomberg, “it has become abundantly clear to me that you are using this coalition of mayors to advance a hidden agenda of bringing lawsuits against members of the firearms industry and spreading anti-gun propaganda.” Cautioning Bloomberg against further “gun shop sting” operations – which brought a warning from the Department of Justice about interfering with genuine criminal investigations – Mayor Moore added, “I do not want the blood of a police officer on my hands so that you can advance your anti-gun litigation campaign.”

“Mayor Moore’s brutally candid assessment should stand as a warning signal to other municipal leaders who have been beguiled by billionaire Bloomberg’s siren song,” said SAF founder Alan Gottlieb. “This anti-gun coalition has never been about public safety, and Bloomberg and his closest colleagues know it. This has always been about getting access to sensitive gun trace data to fuel harassment lawsuits against the firearms industry, and to advance Bloomberg’s agenda of personal and political self-aggrandizement.

“We’ve known for a long time what Mayor Moore discovered with a little digging,” Gottlieb continued. “He learned that Mayor Bloomberg has actually rebuffed efforts by the firearms community to work with local, state and federal law enforcement to prevent criminal access to firearms. He also realized, and says so in his letter, that Bloomberg’s ultimate goal is ‘to end lawful firearms ownership and destroy a lawful American industry.’

“Michael Bloomberg and his vigilante mayors’ group must be stopped,” Gottlieb concluded. “It will come through the courageous leadership of people like Mayor Moore and other mayors who have quit Bloomberg’s coalition. In the real fight against crime, there is no room for lawsuit-happy, publicity-seeking demagogues like Michael Bloomberg.”

The Second Amendment Foundation (www.saf.org) is the nations oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, The Foundation has grown to more than 600,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control. SAF has previously funded successful firearms-related suits against the cities of Los Angeles; New Haven, CT; and San Francisco on behalf of American gun owners, a lawsuit against the cities suing gun makers and an amicus brief and fund for the Emerson case holding the Second Amendment as an individual right.

I never heard of that town before.

I hadn't either, but it's right by the Delaware River, not far from Newark.

Sorry....I guess that from the way I expressed that it’s easy to tell that I’m not a “Joisey-stoat” :-)

I suppose I should have said “It’s about 12 miles southwest of Philly” or something like that :-)
