The first map is a disturbing illustration of food and inflation riots around the globe in 2011 (updated through Feb. 19) I came across on Google. Most of the inflation riots and protests are concentrated in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, but as you can see on the Google map, they are starting to migrate into Europe, as well as China and India. In the U.S., anemic growth, an ongoing housing depression, high unemployment and two rounds of quantitative easing (QE) probably have laid a pretty solid foundation for a similar riot map if Chairman Bernanke decides...

Bin Laden's compound is just north, as you can see below, of a hospital for women and children and a cinema. About 800 feet to the west is the Cantt Police Station. There's little information available about the station online, but a Flickr photo taken in February 2007 shows it in rough condition. The station, at that time, was "included in the demolition list of the provincial government works department," the caption claims.

Map details radiation at N-plant site Tokyo Electric Power Co. has released to the public for the first time a map of its Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant that shows results of a survey of radiation levels at the site. The map released Sunday shows high levels of radiation in different parts of the site, including 300 millisieverts per hour from debris near the No. 3 reactor, the outer building of which was damaged in a hydrogen explosion more than a month ago. The map, which shows radiation levels at about 230 locations within the nuclear plant complex, indicates...

The Map The Crystal Ball’s First 2011 Take on 2012’s Electoral College Larry J. Sabato, Director, U.Va. Center for Politics April 21st, 2011With 18 months to go until November 2012, there is exactly one use for a current projection of the 2012 Electoral College results. This is merely a baseline from which we can judge more reliable projections made closer to the election. Where did we start–before we knew the identity of the Republican nominee for president, the state of the economy in fall 2012 and many other critical facts? And so, with that enormous caveat in mind, here is...

Yeah, yeah, we know: the election's not even this year. Eighteen months or something. But look, it's never too early for our first Larry Sabato electoral map!

I never looked at this map before of states organized by right to vote and forced union. It looks a lot like George Bush's electoral victory maps in 00 & 04. Is it because republicans have done a good job of keeping unions out of red states or ..... is it because the union does a good job of making states blue?

The New Jersey Historical Society has sold one of its prized possessions — an incredibly rare, hand-colored map of the United States from 1784 — because the Newark institution is hard up for cash. But in the museum world, some experts are calling the sale unethical because museums are not supposed to sell their treasures to raise money. The Abel Buell map, which brought in almost $2.1 million at the Christie’s auction, was described by a cartography expert as "one of the most coveted of all American maps." It is the first map of United State published in America, the...

SNIPPET: "U.S. counterterrorism officials have linked one of the nation's most wanted terrorists to last year's thwarted plot to bomb the New York City subway system, authorities said Wednesday. Current and former counterterrorism officials said top al-Qaida operative Adnan Shukrijumah met with one of the would-be suicide bombers in a plot that Attorney General Eric Holder called one of the most dangerous since the 9/11 terror attacks."

SNIPPET: "ROME (Reuters) - Two Moroccan students deported from Italy last month were suspected of plotting to assassinate Pope Benedict, an Interior Ministry source said on Friday. Mohamed Hlal, 26, and Ahmed Errahmouni, 22, students at the University for Foreigners in the central Italian city of Perugia, had been under surveillance by anti-terrorist police for months before they were expelled on April 29." SNIPPET: "Six other foreign students, suspected of contacts with militant Islamic groups, are still under investigation." SNIPPET: "The magazine said police discovered a map of Turin at Errahmouni's house annotated with numbers and circles, ahead of a...

For a quarter of a century, two archaeologists and their team slogged through wild tropical vegetation to investigate and map the remains of one of the largest Maya cities, in Central America. Slow, sweaty hacking with machetes seemed to be the only way to discover the breadth of an ancient urban landscape now hidden beneath a dense forest canopy. Even the new remote-sensing technologies, so effective in recent decades at surveying other archaeological sites, were no help. Imaging radar and multispectral surveys by air and from space could not “see” through the trees. Then, in the dry spring season a...

A Virginia man who once spent eight years on the run from naval investigators was arrested in Somerset County early today with a trove of high-powered weapons, including a grenade-launcher and two assault rifles, along with maps of a U.S. military base and a civilian neighborhood, authorities said. The federal government’s Joint Terrorism Task Force quickly joined the investigation into Lloyd R. Woodson, 43, who had been staying at a Branchburg motel since last week. Woodson, whose last known address was in Reston, Va., was wearing a bullet-proof vest and carrying one of the assault rifles — customized to shoot...
