All Eric McDonough wanted was for Homestead Police officer Alejandro Murguido to obey the same traffic laws he enforced in their neighborhood. Instead, the 36-year-old scientist ended up in jail on charges of aggravated stalking and threatening a public servant because he confronted Murguido with his cellphone’s voice recorder outside the cop’s home two years ago. Since then, McDonough says Homestead Police Department brass have refused to investigate Murguido for falsely accusing him even though he has an audio recording that contradicts the cop’s version of events. McDonough tells his story in this video, so this is not the usual...

Running for the U.S. Senate in 2010, Rand Paul became known as that crazy right-winger who expressed reservations about the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But in the past two years, the Kentucky Republican has emerged as his party's most passionate voice on criminal justice reform, explicitly decrying the system's disproportionate impact on African Americans. You might assume that Paul, widely seen as a contender for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, is trying to redeem himself with black voters who were alienated by his criticism of the Civil Rights Act. Yet both positions spring from the same wariness of state...

Cops will die because of Ferguson. That’s the increasing likelihood as politicians, activists and media advocates across the country vilify law enforcement and the men and women who work in it. Cops will die because of Ferguson. They will certainly face increased danger, and so will we. The convergence of two unavoidable consequences of the rhetorical attack on the police will make that inevitable. The first is the emboldening of those who would raise a fist or a gun against the police. When you have the president of the United States – twice – criticize law enforcement, implying racism, and...

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine will convene a special grand jury in two weeks to determine whether a crime was committed when Beavercreek police officers shot John Crawford III on Aug. 5 at a Walmart store. DeWine said his office is reviewing footage from more than 200 cameras at the Pentagon Boulevard store where Crawford, 22, was shot by police officers on the evening of Aug. 5. He said his office is also retaining a "use of force" expert on the matter. - See more at: http://m.whio.com/news/news/kasich-news-conference-today-walmart-shooting/ng5WB/#sthash.jXSkIYFU.dpuf

One of the fascinating layers of the Ferguson riot story is how this tragedy has exposed what is a rapidly changing attitudinal climate towards law enforcement officers (LEOs). What was for years a stable predicate -- conservatives being reflexively ‘law and order’ and inherently giving cops the benefit of the doubt -- while liberals with the built in ACLU type disdain for cops tending to always assume the worst of those in power – is now a vortex of confusion, cross currents, and contradictions. It’s not a total flip-flop of the convention, but it’s moving in that direction. After all, we’ve...

The rioting, protests and controversy continue to swirl around Ferguson this weekend, and you will no doubt be reading plenty of coverage from both sides about it. But in the background, a disturbing, larger national conversation has erupted out of the troubles in the St. Louis suburb. The hot topic everywhere seems to be a growing call to halt the so called “militarization” of the nation’s civilian police forces, highlighted by the riot suppression gear on display in Ferguson. It’s an argument coming from both sides of the ideological spectrum, too. The IBD editorial board warns us to “beware” of...

If you’ve been watching cable news, reading Hollywood celebrities’ tweets, and listening to race-hustling opportunists, you might think that every police officer in America has a finger on the trigger, hunting for any excuse to gun down defenseless youths. This hysterical nonsense must be stopped. The Cirque du Cop-Bashing, with Al Sharpton as ringmaster, is working overtime to exploit the deadly incident in Ferguson, Mo. That means stoking anti–law enforcement fires at all costs. Are there bad cops? Yes. Does the police state go overboard sometimes? Yes. Do the demagogues decrying systemic racism and braying about “assassinations” know what happened...

It's not every day people are thankful for being pulled over for running a red light, but for one woman choking on a sausage and biscuit, the stop likely saved her life. Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer Jason Gates, meanwhile, says he was just doing his job. After he pulled her over and approached the car, he wondered for a second or two if the woman was just trying to get out of a ticket, but he quickly knew she was really choking and told her to get out of the car. Just two firm pumps of the Heimlich maneuver dislodged...

For the past week in Ferguson, reporters have been using the McDonald’s a few blocks from the scene of Michael Brown’s shooting as a staging area. Demonstrations have blown up each night nearby. But inside there’s WiFi and outlets, so it’s common for reporters to gather there. snip As I made my way toward the door, the officers gave me conflicting information. One instructed me to exit to my left. As I turned left, another officer emerged, blocking my path. Go another way,” he said. As I turned, my backpack, which was slung over one shoulder, began to slip. I...

HuffPost Live host Marc Lamont Hill has poured gasoline on the racial controversy over Michael Brown, the unnarmed, 18-year-old black Missouri man who was shot dead by a police officer. “A Black man in America is killed every 28 hours by police or vigilantes,†Hill tweeted on Monday. “THAT, not rioting, is domestic terrorism…†Hill was referring to unrest that broke out in Ferguson, Mo., following the shooting that resulted Monday in law enforcement using teargas on protesters. Hill followed up on that tweet with more racial commentary. “Michael Brown should be starting college in a few hours. Instead, he’s...
