    Newser ^ | Aug 16, 2014 | Newser Editors
If you're partial to black and white "tuxedo" cats, an animal shelter in Novato, Calif., would like to talk. It seems someone has dropped off more than 100 of the cats over the last 18 months. The last dropoff occurred Monday, when a car pulled up to the Marin Humane Society and left behind three boxes with 24 cats. It was the fourth such occurrence in the last 18 months. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that all the cats, which range in age from kitten to full-grown, appeared to be in good health, with no fleas or diseases. The unidentified...
  • A ‘purr-fect’ day to adopt a black cat (Aug 17th)

    08/16/2014 12:29:49 PM PDT · by Perdogg · 26 replies
Sleek, majestic, playful and cuddly—what’s not to like about a black cat? This Sunday, Aug. 17, is National Black Cat Appreciation Day, a time to recognize the fine features of these felines and to encourage the adoption of black cats. A black cat is not a specific breed. The Cat Fanciers Association allows solid black coloring in 22 of its recognized breeds. The only breed with all-black felines is the Bombay, produced by mating a Burmese with a black American shorthair.

Officers got into a standoff with an enraged cat early Tuesday morning after it allegedly trapped its owners in the bedroom of their Chula Vista home. According to Chula Vista police, a woman and her adult daughter called 911 at about 4 a.m. to report that they had barricaded themselves inside a bedroom in the 4000 block of Neptune Court because their cat would not let them out. They told emergency dispatchers that when they tried to exit the room, the cat became furious. Officers responded and tried coaxing the cat, named "Cuppy," by softly calling it, until it eventually...
  • The Feline Uprising Is Upon Us

The feline uprising is upon us, and to be fair, it's about damn time. Our cat companions have suffered for too long at the hands of the internet, as we rush to monetize their every move. Have you ever stopped and considered the fact that maybe they don't want to be internet famous? While we continue to ignore their right to privacy, cats across the nation are rising up against their owners to say: We're mad as hell, and we're not gonna take it anymore, and also, meow, please give us more dry food. Earlier this year, a 20-pound cat...

When a litter of puppies was born on the base where Caba served, the animals provided just the relief he needed. But a few months later, the soldiers’ tour was coming to an end. Determined not to leave the dogs behind, they searched for a way to get them to America. That’s when Caba was connected with Nowzad Dogs. Since 2007, the organization has reunited hundreds of soldiers with the stray dogs and cats they rescued while serving on the front lines. The group’s shelter and clinic in Kabul are staffed by 14 Afghan nationals, four of whom are trained...
  • 23 silly cat tongues to rule them all [photos]

Catching them with their jaws down It's a phenomenon that cat enthusiasts eagerly await — the moment when a beloved feline lets down its guard and allows its tiny pink tongue to hang absent-mindedly out of its mouth. This often happens when the kitty is deep in sleep (as seen above) or following a fastidious licking bath (below), but one thing everyone knows for certain is that the longer the tongue stays out the kitty's mouth, the more magical (and hilarious) the moment becomes. Sometimes these silly moments only last a couple seconds, so the cat's human inevitably makes a...

Butterscotch, the Brandon cat with a bird feeder stuck on his head, has been caught and is no longer wearing the bird feeder that has been stuck on his head for about the last two weeks. BALA, the Brandon and Area Lost Animals group that has been trying to trap the feline, posted Saturday on its Facebook page that Butterscotch is safe. The group said Butterscotch is being checked out by the Grand Valley Animal Clinic and he's in good shape. The posting said while Butterscotch was in the trap, he broke the bird feeder, "exposing his handsome face to...

Yesterday, I posted a YouTube video that had spawned the gif of the tiger attack you see below. For some reason the video was terribly disappointing and I felt that way, too. But had thought the video would be superior to a simple gif. Today, reading a commenter's disappointment totally agreed with him as I've expressed here below. Hopefully you'll all enjoy the gif and never bother to seethe video it originated from. I wouldn't, couldn't disagree with you. I first saw the famed tiger attack as a gif (here below much more dramatic than the video could ever be)and...

This is THE famous Tiger Attack video! A tiger attacked forest rangers in Kaziranga National Park, in the north-east of India, in 2004. This is the story of what actually happened that day, including an Interview with forest ranger R. K. Das. You've seen this video on Google Video ever since Wilderness Films India Ltd. launched its content on the site, in December 2005. Due to widespread compromises to our IPR, we decided to withdraw the video from the internet. We're now back on the internet, with Youtube, and the world now gets to see our viral videos and other...

I LIVED with the same cat for 19 years — by far the longest relationship of my adult life. Under common law, this cat was my wife. I fell asleep at night with the warm, pleasant weight of the cat on my chest. The first thing I saw on most mornings was the foreshortened paw of the cat retreating slowly from my face and her baleful crescent glare informing me that it was Cat Food Time. As I often told her, in a mellow, resonant, Barry White voice: “There is no luuve … like the luuve that exists … between...

Your cat can haz fun in the sun at what is expected to be a massive meeting of felines and their human counterparts at Dolores Park this Saturday. Now we could be wrong, but it appears that this is the first time San Franciscans have organized such a cat convergence, better known as First Caturday. Needless to say, if you have cat allergies, this might be a good day to visit those friends you've been meaning to see in the far East Bay. First Caturday starts at 2 p.m. sharp, and for the following three hours, cats will have free...

SYDNEY — A newly-adopted cat has been credited with saving the home of its new family. Tilly, a tabby, alerted her owner Matt Clayton to a fire in the roof of the family home in Melbourne, Australia. As he was leaving for work later than usual, Tilly refused to move out of his way. Instead she starred at the ceiling, purring repeatedly. There was a silent, odourless fire in the roof but traces of danger were hidden. At Tilly's insistence, Matt gently touched a down-light and smoke came billowing out. He said the straw insulation would have caught alight and...

Tonawanda Island is overrun with forgotten felines. They might not have a council or a conch, but cats have completely taken over an island in the middle of the Niagara River in New York. Locals estimate that Tonawanda Island now has hundreds of abandoned and feral cats roaming its shores. People don't live on the 85-acre island year-round, but the cats now do. Word about the cat population has apparently spread because people will come to the island specifically to drop off their unwanted feline friends. "They're throughout the whole island," Mike Charnock, the owner of the Shores Waterfront Restaurant &...
