Houston, we have a problem. That's the message supporters of the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) are sending after voters rejected the measure Tuesday by a margin of 61 percent to 39 percent. The controversial measure would have established nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ people in the city, among other groups.

The city of Houston decided on Tuesday not to engage in the mass delusion that says that men are women and women men. The 2-1 vote not to allow biological men to use female bathrooms, and not to force employers to continue paying employees who decide to impersonate members of other sexes on the job, is a welcome breath of fresh air.

On Tuesday, Houston voters will be asked if they want to keep or repeal the city's strong and enlightened equal rights ordinance, which was approved by the City Council last year and put on hold pending this week's vote. Opponents of the law have perversely turned a broad, sensible measure that protects people from discrimination in employment, city services, housing and public accommodations, among other things, into a debate about sexual predators in women's restrooms.

Video at link. Houston Mayor Annise Parker wasn’t exactly gracious in defeat, accusing those who opposed the city’s transgender-rights ordinance of “deliberate lies†and predicting the city’s economy would suffer as a result of the measure’s repeal. In remarks shortly after Tuesday’s balloting, Ms. Parker blamed the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance’s lopsided loss on “a very small but determined group of right-wing ideologues and the religionist right†for waging “a campaign of fear-mongering and deliberate lies.†The ordinance, named Proposition 1 on the city ballot, lost by 62 to 38 percent despite the strong support of national gay-rights organizations, who...

Hope for Christian bakeries and women who don't want to see drag queens in the restroom It was a year ago that the Houston City Council, with the backing of lesbian Democrat Mayor Annise Parker, decided that private businesses owned by Christians had no rights, nor did women who preferred to feel confident that those they might encounter in public restrooms who looked like women actually were. Last night, in a demonstration that normal people have not traveled as far down the lunatic track as politicians, Houston voters repealed this nonsense:

Houston's controversial equal rights ordinance failed by a wide margin Tuesday, with voters opting to repeal the law that offered broad non-discrimination protections, according to incomplete and unofficial returns. The hotly contested election has spurred national attention, drawing comment from the White House and the state's top officials. Largely conservative opponents of the law allege that it would allow men dressed as women, including sexual predators, to enter women's restrooms. Supporters of the law, including Mayor Annise Parker, argue that it extends an important local recourse for a range of protected classes to respond to discrimination. Supporters released a written...

"It’s [already] illegal to go into a bathroom with the intent to harm someone. And, last time we checked, rapists and abusers are going to behave as you would expect them to behave–without regard for the law, with or without an equal rights ordinance."

A veto referendum on the anti-discrimination ordinance known as the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) will be on the ballot for Houston voters in Harris County, Texas on November 3, 2015. It’s controversial for two significant reasons and is the result of a several year battle between the residents of Houston and its outgoing lesbian mayor Annise Parker. Despite protections already provided by Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Proposition 1 on the ballot reads: Read more at http://constitution.com/hero-zero-protection-for-womens-girls-rights/

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- On the first day of early voting, two new ads were released to abc13. Both of them are available here, but we are told will start airing on broadcast and cable television Tuesday. Lt. Governor Dan Patrick held a news conference Monday to unveil his offering. In the 30-second spot paid for by Patrick's campaign, the Lt. Governor stands against a flag draped background and tells viewers, "City of Houston Prop One is not about equality. That is already the law of the land. It's about allowing men in women's locker rooms and bathrooms."

In what undoubtedly will be seen as a controversial move, Texans owner Bob McNair donated $10,000 this week to a group advocating against LGBTQ rights. The donation comes at a time when the NFL has been publicly promoting acceptance of gay players and Michael Sam, the league's first openly gay player, was drafted last year.

A large amount of scaffolding collapsed Friday outside a building under construction in Houston, causing “multiple injuries,” a city agency said. Video from the scene showed piles of metal lying on the ground outside a roughly seven-story building. The collapsed scaffolding appeared to cover a large section of a city block. Houston’s Office of Emergency Management reported the injures from the collapse, which happened near the corner of Crawford and Preston streets — an area not far from Minute Maid Park, the home of Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros. People were urged to steer clear of the area so emergency...

Just as the Houston Astros are making their first post-season appearance in a decade, one of the franchise's all-time top players has made an ad blasting the city's mayor over a proposal headed for the November ballot that would allow transgender people to use the public restroom of their choice. Lance Berkman, who slugged 366 home runs for the Astros, Rangers, Cardinals and Yankees during a 15-year career, filmed a commercial for a political action committee working to defeat the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance when it comes up for a vote on Nov. 3. HERO would ban discrimination on a...
