Ok, gotta admit I've wanted an AR-15 for awhile, and now the State of Illinois is looking to ban "assault weapons" and trying to make political hay out of the Aurora, Colorado shootings last week. I'm opposed to government gun control, and I'd like to add a nice AR-15 to my collection. Problem is, I'm not well versed on them, and my budget is about $1200 for one. I've looked at the Smith & Wesson AR-15 Sport and think it's "ok" but I'm interested in something a little more.

I apologize for the vanity posting, but I am at the end of my rope on this. And that leads me to ask this question to the smartest people in the world, the people that read and post articles to the Free Republic website. You cant buy fresh "off the tree" olives anywhere, that I can find, in California. And they are everywhere. I was up in Napa and Sonoma Valley last week, and there are olive trees everywhere. We drove all over the place, to every produce stand we could find. Nobody sells uncured olives. The thing is, I...

If I had tried to get this same image by trying to pose the animals, it never would have happened. The best pictures of livestock and pets come from the moment. Animals have emotions, but they do not provide them on a command. Looking at Rita's face, the strength and love of this animal shows.

Swedish police have detained a 31-year-old man in Ängelholm in Western Sweden who was discovered after he sought advice from authorities on the legality of building a nuclear reactor in a domestic kitchen. The man began his experiment some six months ago and has reportedly been open about his plans to construct a nuclear reactor in his apartment in the small Swedish coastal town, maintaining a blog of his nuclear adventure. The man, who explained that his interest in nuclear physics was awakened as a teenager, ordered some radioactive material from overseas and acquired more by taking apart a domestic...

BRUSSELS — The European Union says it is temporarily banning the import of certain seeds from Egypt after some were linked to a deadly outbreak of the E. coli in Germany and France. The EU said Tuesday member states also have to ensure that all "seeds imported from one Egyptian exporter between 2009 and 2011 are withdrawn from the market, sampled and destroyed." The bloc's Safety Authority said earlier Tuesday that the fenugreek seeds blamed for the recent outbreak are still on the market and were shipped to more countries than was previously believed, including Austria, Britain and Spain. ........snip...more...

Why waste your money on a 2006, used-up Maxum 4200 SY? Or yet another boring Lexus that lets you down? Over here in Sweden and elsewhere in Scandinavia, a lot of people are crazy about restoring old (wooden) yachts and veteran cars of the 1930s-1970s, even if nurturing such projects often set them back way more than buying new cars and boats would. Why is that so? Perhaps life was better around 1950? Or perhaps not. Personally, I'd say life always has involved hardship and seldom been carefree, but that didn't exactly bother people like Virgil Exner, did it? (Click...

It seems collecting empty crisp packets is quite a popular hobby. Last week Metro reported on Dave Valentine’s impressive 500-pack archive – but this obviously opened a can (well, a packet) of worms. Hannah Conduct has come forward to reveal a whopping 9,000 empty bags in her collection, which she has gathered over the past 30 years. The marketing manager, who insists she is ‘not a big crisp eater’, said her pastime began during one of her regular family holidays on a canal boat. ‘We were sitting at a pub on the canals one day and I was eating pork...

Each year, around 10 000 cars of America's past flood the streets of Swedish Västerås. I'm not an owner of such a vehicle myself (although I plan to be - the future of my economy is looking good!), but I happen to love these cars and can't help but feeling somewhat proud, as a Swede, over my country hosting such an event (regardless of what Buford T Justice has to say about it). Greetings from Volvo Land to America/one nation of car lovers to another! (Links to clips below, enjoy!)
