A Queen’s University student theatre company has cancelled a production of Shakespeare’s Othello set to open this month following an outcry over the decision to cast a white woman in the title role of a black man. “For the safety and mental health of our entire team we unfortunately feel the need to suspend our production of Othello,” the artistic directors wrote on Facebook Wednesday. The University of Texas at Austin will ignore demands from student officials to “disband” a young conservative student group following a controversial “affirmative action bake sale” last week. The bake sale instantly drew large crowds of protesters, many claiming the bake sale was a “hate crime.” A petition demanding the removal of the group also circulated the campus and as of Thursday, it has 863 signatures. The University of Michigan’s new chief diversity officer will collect $385,000 a year under his various job titles, including a new one created by a recently revealed $85 million, five-year U-M diversity plan. Robert Sellers’ appointment to a new position called “vice provost for equity and inclusion and chief diversity officer” (VPEI-CDO) was approved Oct. 20 by the university’s governing board. Sellers previously served as “vice provost for equity and inclusion,” and is also listed as a professor of both psychology and education. This year's college news is about black student demands for segregated campus housing and other racially segregated campus spaces and programs. I totally disagree with these calls by black students. In 1938, Lloyd Lionel Gaines, a young black scholar from Mississippi, filed a suit against the University of Mississippi School of Law after being denied entry because he was “colored.” The Supreme Court eventually ruled that under the “separate but equal” clause Mississippi had the obligation to either admit him or establish a separate law school to accommodate people of color. Mississippi chose to do the latter. The NAACP planned to challenge the inadequacy of the school, as was their strategy against the tone-deaf “separate but equal” laws of the day. The for-profit college chain ITT Technical Institute is shutting down all 130 of its U.S. campuses, saying Tuesday it can't survive recent sanctions by the U.S. Department of Education. In a letter to more than 35,000 students, the Indiana-based parent company ITT Educational Services announced that campuses won't open for the fall term that was scheduled to begin Sept. 12 — leaving students scrambling for last-minute options since many U.S. colleges already have started fall classes. Six of California’s largest Christian colleges and an association of California private schools support a bill that is designed to essentially remove religious schools’ Title IX exemptions and force the LGBT agenda on them. Five Notre Dame football players were arrested with a misdemeanor possession of marijuana on Friday, according to the Indiana State Police. A North Carolina university became embroiled in controversy on Friday after a student group posted a 'privilege board' on campus which calls on white, male, able-bodied, Christian, or cisgender people to 'check their privilege.'
