The Biden administration is sending $100 million to colleges that primarily serve minority Americans A news release last week from the Department of Education announced Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions are eligible for a pot of almost $100 million in grants for infrastructure improvement and what the release calls “improved student outcomes for underserved students.” The release stated that $25 billion in funding has been poured into those colleges during the Biden administration.

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. — Georgia lawmakers say they were overwhelmed Saturday by multiple car crashes and a shooting on Highway 80 as thousands made their way to Orange Crush on Tybee Island. Orange Crush, the unofficial beach bash for HBCU students, returned to Tybee Island this weekend, bringing many visitors. City officials told WJCL that the event was unpermitted, however, they prepared law enforcement, firefighters, and more to keep everyone safe. While authorities prepared for the beach’s chaos, the road to the party was a different story.

A growing number of historically Black colleges and universities have had to lock down or postpone classes due to bomb threats on the first day of Black History Month. At least 14 HBCUs reported bomb threats Tuesday. At least one of them, Howard University, also received a bomb threat Monday. "We've had these challenges before," Howard University President Wayne Frederick said Tuesday. DURHAM, N.C. — Two people died in a shooting on the North Carolina Central University campus on Saturday night. The shooting did not involve NCCU students, according to a statement from university officials. Campus police sent an alert to the NC Central community after a report of shots fired around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night at the Latham Parking Deck on East Lawson Street. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam proposed a $1 million investment Monday to implement a program to train STEM teachers at the state’s two public historically black colleges and universities. It has been an open secret for several decades that the writing is on the wall for most historically black colleges and universities. Nearly 30% of payments toward a loan program for historically black colleges and universities were delinquent last year, and three of the 46 schools have outright defaulted, according to a government watchdog report being released Thursday.
