The City of Fort Worth says it was targeted by a group of hackers because of the state's stance on gender-affirming care. City officials say the hackers stole information from a website used to track city work orders, but no sensitive information has been released. On Friday, June 23 the City's Information Technology Solutions Department was told about a post that said the City's website had been hacked. Staff found that data posted online came from an internal information system used to track work orders, not the City's public website. "The City of Fort Worth has confirmed that the posted...

A key part of the Chinese government’s multi-pronged strategy to lie, to cheat and to steal their way to surpassing us as the global superpower is cyber. The director went on to explain...

Flights are grounded all across the USA… but why? Everybody knows the proximate cause, but is there a deeper rot at the FAA and our Department of Transportation? You bet! “How could the FAA leave all US domestic flights grounded for the first time since the 9/11 terror attacks?” is the obvious question, after Wednesday’s hot mess at the FAA. Under Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a better question might be, “Yes, but were flights grounded with diversity, equity, and inclusion?” Because DEI is exactly where Buttigieg’s priorities lie — not with the vital business of keeping our transportation infrastructure operating....

Payment-seeking software made by Russian hackers was used in three quarters of all the ransomware schemes reported to a US financial crime agency in the second half of 2021, a Treasury Department analysis released on Tuesday (Nov 1) showed. In analysis issued in response to the increase in number and severity of ransomware attacks against critical infrastructure in the United States since late 2020, the US Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) said it had received 1,489 ransomware-related filings worth nearly US$1.2 billion in 2021, a 188 per cent jump from the year before. "This release includes bug fixes, increased stability and performance improvements." The routine software update may be one of the most familiar and least understood parts of our digital lives. A pop-up window announces its arrival and all that is required of us is to plug everything in before bed. The next morning, rather like the shoemaker and the elves, our software is magically transformed. Last spring, a Texas-based company called SolarWinds made one such software update available to its customers. It was supposed to provide the regular fare — bug fixes, performance enhancements — to the company's popular network management...

The hackers had claimed to have stolen more than 500 gigabytes of data from the school district during last month’s hack, although authorities have not yet verified that claim. The crime group originally set Monday as the deadline for the school district to pay a ransom to keep the data off of the internet, but the data was published ahead of time late Saturday night. The motive for publishing two days ahead of the established deadline appears to be related to Superintendent Alberto Carvalho publicly announcing that the school district would not pay any ransom to the hackers. The attack...

The hackers who targeted the Los Angeles Unified School District have made a ransom demand, officials confirmed Tuesday, an indication that the attackers have extracted sensitive data or believe they can bluff the district into thinking that they have. “We can confirm that there was a demand made,” L.A. schools Supt. Alberto Carvalho said. “There has been no response to the demand.” Carvalho declined to disclose the amount of the ransom demand or any further information about what information, if any, the attackers may be holding. He said that there have been “no new security breaches” and that the school...

Congress's website was hacked for around an hour Thursday evening as a Russia-aligned hacktivist group took credit for turning the text of the site entirely into Russian. The pro-Russian hacker group Killnet claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on its Telegram channel. In its message announcing the action, translated by Polina Tyntareva, a Russian university student, the hacker group gave an encyclopedic definition of Congress before it said, "So they have money for weapons for the whole world, but not for their own defense." As seen in a video posted along with the message, Congress's homepage was changed...

Dozens of attacks on churches, pregnancy crisis centers, and pro-life groups around the nation have drawn an FBI investigation and questions from lawmakers about whether the Biden administration is doing enough to stop them. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) sent a letter to FBI Director Chris Wray this week calling for a briefing on the issue and urging Wray to ensure these “violent attacks are recognized by the FBI and are being properly investigated for what they are—cases of abortion-related violent extremism. “There have been at least 40 violent attacks on crisis pregnancy centers, religious institutions, and other pro-life entities since...
