Payment-seeking software made by Russian hackers was used in three quarters of all the ransomware schemes reported to a US financial crime agency in the second half of 2021, a Treasury Department analysis released on Tuesday (Nov 1) showed.
In analysis issued in response to the increase in number and severity of ransomware attacks against critical infrastructure in the United States since late 2020, the US Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) said it had received 1,489 ransomware-related filings worth nearly US$1.2 billion in 2021, a 188 per cent jump from the year before.
Out of 793 ransomware incidents reported to FinCEN in the second half of 2021, 75 per cent "had a nexus to Russia, its proxies, or persons acting on its behalf", the report said.

In 2008 i was lucky enough to get a gig on a white hat project to deal with increased targeting of healthcare organisations by criminal cyber gangs. First order of business was to figure out how they operate.
We tracked one group of social engineers to a small town in the Russuan Caucasus. They were using a variety of confidence tactics to isolate people in management positions or administration access. Some were susceptible to really generic spam, others needed layers of convincers. But the objective was “lateral movement” get someone to open the door onto the network and provide ways to sniff out useful targets.
Point is, 14 years ago the west wasn’t at war with Russia but Russia was actively attacking our hospitals on a daily basis.
