Hundreds of millions of U.S. tax dollars went to recipients in China and Russia in recent years without being properly tracked by the federal government, including a grant that enabled a state-run Russian lab to test cats on treadmills, according to Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa). Ernst and her staff investigators, working with auditors at the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the Congressional Research Service, as well as two nonprofit Washington watchdogs—Open The Books (OTB) and the White Coat Waste Project (WCWP)—discovered dozens of other grants that weren’t counted on the federal government’s USASpending.gov internet database. While the total value of the...

Right now Trump is sitting on a stack of Trump cards or maybe Uno Wild Draw 4 (more years) that he just waiting to lay down like a fricking royal flush. He has court cases still pending that will go to the Supreme Court & thanks to TX case he now know how to file it under article 3 not 2 that will force them to hear it. He has the DNI report on Friday. Barr steps down 23rd (can now be a witness—he did his job). Durham is a special counsel (can prosecute in any state). He’s letting civil,...

OSAKA (Kyodo) -- Ozeki Takayasu may have finished without a title, but he finished the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in style with a win over yokozuna Kakuryu on Sunday. Takayasu and Kakuryu were forced to refight the tournament's final bout on the 15th and final day at Edion Arena Osaka, where judges were unable to decide a winner in their first try. In the second try, Takayasu was too fast for the grand champion and easily forced him out. Takayasu has now won 12 bouts in consecutive tournaments. Kakuryu, who clinched his fourth career championship on Saturday, finished with a...

I have found that the site Replace smart quotes with regular straight quotes fixes the problem Free Republic recently has with quotes and dashes. For example, a New York Times article As Germany Welcomes Migrants, Sexual Attacks in Cologne Point to a New Reality that when originally pasted looks like this: COLOGNE, Germany — In early December, the Cologne police made their New Year’s Eve preparations. Drawing on the previous year’s experience, they identified their biggest worry as pickpocketing and fireworks among the crowds. So they increased their holiday deployment, to 142 from 88, concentrating on the banks of the...

Many thanks to JimRob and all the team at FreeRepublic.com! Great interface in so many ways. When I'm Freepin' out, I don't want heavy graphics and ads coving the page top to bottom. People are always looking. Restaurant managers are doing flybys (it's there job). FreeRepublic.com lets me get my patriot on privately in public without having to worry about folks looking over my shoulder - which is nice. I preach it, but when it's appropriate. The only thing though is that annoying freepathon bar at the top. People should give more faster to get rid of that thing ;)....

Opinionated talk is big business on cable news networks when the sun goes down. During the day, though, it's the opposite. MSNBC is shuffling its daytime lineup early next year because its strategy of spreading personality-driven programming throughout the schedule isn't working. The new approach will emphasize a fast-paced review of the day's big stories as they break.

Obama And That Other Ponzi Scheme President-elect's name may emerge in Norman Hsu fraud trial DECEMBER 31--As if being linked to one high-profile criminal case weren't enough, President-elect Barack Obama's name may soon pop up in another federal prosecution, this one involving a massive Ponzi scheme (no, the other massive Ponzi scheme). In addition to the Rod Blagojevich pay-for-play probe, Obama could figure in the upcoming fraud trial of Norman Hsu, the disgraced Democratic fundraiser who was charged last year with operating a $60 million pyramid scheme. According to investigators, Hsu, a major Hillary Clinton fundraiser, pressured investors to donate...

This week the font size of the articles & posts on Free Republic enlarged to the same size as the titles, making the readability for me much harder, particularly when I am scanning the posts. Is there a way to change it back to what it was? I previously viewed the titles in an Arial size 12 font and the body of the thread & posts in size 10. (It is just on the Free Republic website that I have this problem, so it is not my computer's Internet preference settings.)

I dislike the new FR format. The former one was simple to use. Why does one need to click on a current post to be able to submit a new post? I would prefer to see the post option returned to the upper right corner of the screen where it was previously. I'm getting so frustrated with the new format I don't enjoy FR any longer.

"In response to requests for even easier access to the Binary Formats, Microsoft has agreed to remove any intermediate steps necessary to get the documentation. They're going to just post it, making it directly available as a download on the Microsoft web site. Microsoft will also make the Binary Formats subject to its Open Specification Promise by February 15, 2008. They're even planning to include an Open Source converter implementation."

Have not found scientific studies yet . . . but this link has some interesting assertions from the profession: http://planetoftheweb.com/components/promos.php?id=182&channel=Quantum%20Tips Evidently . . . "Lowercase letters are much more legible than uppercase letters. There is no difference in legibility between headlines set in all lowercase and those set in Uppercase/Lowercase. Display lines set in all capital letters are difficult to read. Body copy set in all caps is totally illegible. [the scientist in me says that's not accurate--hyperbole or some such] Words set in all caps are read letter by letter. Reading is approximately 15% slower in words set in...

The growing problem of accessing old digital file formats is a "ticking time bomb", the chief executive of the UK National Archives has warned. Natalie Ceeney said society faced the possibility of "losing years of critical knowledge" because modern PCs could not always open old file formats. She was speaking at the launch of a partnership with Microsoft to ensure the Archives could read old formats. Microsoft's UK head Gordon Frazer warned of a looming "digital dark age".Costly dealHe added: "Unless more work is done to ensure legacy file formats can be read and edited in the future, we face...

THOSE WHO IGNORE HISTORY are doomed to repeat it. One of life's more satisfying ironies, however, is that the same fate often befalls those who fixate on history. Consider the coming train wreck of Sony's PlayStation 3.At this year's annual Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, Sony announced that its next-generation video-game console will begin retailing in November for $599 (or $499 for a stripped-down version). The news rippled through the gaming industry, the consensus being that Sony had doomed its new system with such a high price tag. Traditionally, home video-game consoles have sold for $199 to $299.This news...
