  • Tim Tebow joins Chip Kelly's quarterback crew

    ESPN ^ | April 19, 2015 | Phil Sheridan
[...] If Belichick, the best coach in the NFL over the past 15 years, doesn't see an NFL quarterback in Tebow, then that would seem to settle the issue. Except that Kelly, who worked Tebow out last month, sees the skills and the physical presence and he can't help himself. It's not just about ego. There's a challenge in finding ways to utilize a player's talents, and Kelly enjoys that challenge. [...] The point is, Bradford is the presumed starter with Sanchez as the very capable No. 2 quarterback. But if Tebow is able to click in Kelly's offense --...

He’s baaaaaaaaaack. At least, for some offseason workouts, and — who knows? — possibly much more. Tim Tebow, the decorated Florida quarterback whose first stint in the NFL was as brief as it was closely scrutinized, has reached an agreement to join the Eagles, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Philadelphia Coach Chip Kelly has spoken highly of Tebow in the past, and apparently he saw enough of the quarterback during a March workout to add him to a depth chart that currently includes Sam Bradford, Mark Sanchez, Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne. The Eagles had reportedly been trying to trade...

Morgantown, West Virginia's city council passed a law Tuesday to ban upholstered furniture outdoors, WV Public Broadcasting reports. Why? Because West Virginia University students won't stop burning couches outside. The new law prohibits people from keeping couches in their yards or unenclosed porches. According to WV Public, violators will receive a written warning, and then fines of up to $500.
  • NFL makes Sarah Thomas first full-time female official

Thomas comes backed with a strong resume, having been the first female official to work a major collegiate bowl game. She joins eight other referees granted first-time employment for league games. "Our incoming officials have all demonstrated that they are among the best in college football," NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said in a statement. "We are excited about having them join us." Thomas had been doing some sideline work for Browns, Saints and Colts minicamp practices in the past, but she truly made her name through a strong resume at the NCAA level.

Call me cra-cra . . . but I’m beginning to wonder if NFL Quarterback Cam Newton isn’t being deceived, duped, double-crossed, alas hoodwinked by Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson . . . . Might it be sportsfans the NFL owner’s round-table of fatcat aristocrats has determined the league doesn’t’ want this Black Superman as one of the premier faces of their gazillion dollar operation? Perhaps Jerry’s being “compensated” for more-or-less “tying” Cam’s hands . . . by giving him no legitimate hands to catch his strong-armed projectiles. Cam’s surrounded and protected by mediocrity and I wonder if that’s not by...

The Redskins nickname has been the forgotten NFL controversy of the past several months. With concussions and domestic violence dominating the off-field headlines, the nickname debate circling around the Washington NFL franchise has moved to the backburner recently. However, some interesting developments from The Associated Press could move it back front and center. The organization is considering whether to make a ruling against the polarizing nickname when it comes to the influential AP Stylebook.

Chuck Bednarik, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and one of the last great two-way NFL players, has died. He was 89. A star linebacker and center, Bednarik helped the Philadelphia Eagles win the 1960 NFL championship, tackling Green Bay’s Jim Taylor on the final play to seal the victory. The top overall pick in the 1949 draft out of Penn, he spent 14 seasons as one of the toughest and most feared players in the game.

  • Browns now positioned to possibly make move for Marcus Mariota

The signing of Dwayne Bowe may mean nothing in terms of the Cleveland Browns’ long, lost quarterback position. It may well be that the Browns intend to go into the 2015 season with Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel -- scary as that sounds. Then again, maybe the Browns are laying low for a major move -- a trade up to acquire Oregon’s Marcus Mariota. With Bowe on the roster, the trade makes more sense than it did without him. Without Bowe, the Browns were in dire need of a receiver. With him (and with Brian Hartline), they can get by...

Let's get this out of the way first: If Tim Tebow's workout-gone-viral had been a revelation to the Eagles on Monday, he'd likely now be arranging logistics to spend the spring in Philadelphia. Tebow remains, more than anything else, a curiosity in NFL circles. According to one team official in Philly, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner did "fine." Sometimes, these tire-kickings are favors to players, to get them back on the radar. And this one, at the very least, did that for Tebow. So ... what next?

A movement is afoot to destroy the career of a young black man whom a young white woman with overwhelming, well-documented credibility problems has accused of raping her. Three separate investigations, including a Florida State Code of Conduct hearing, have found former Florida State quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston not to be a rapist. But now The Hunting Ground, a much-touted documentary on previously anonymous accuser presenting her case publicly for the first time. A year ago the Oakland Raiders were willing to assume all of Darrelle Revis' existing contract with Tampa, and trade for him before he hit the open market, paying him $16M a season happily and not having to come up with a huge upfront payment or signing bonus or anything like that. It was exactly the kind of scenario the team -- far below the NFL's projected spending threshold from 2013-2016 required under this collective bargaining agreement -- needed, a veteran player who would never come to the perpetually rebuilding franchise in the first place, available via trade at a...
