Why the Raiders must spend but can't get anybody to take their money
CBS Sports ^ | March 11, 2015 | Jason La Canfora

A year ago the Oakland Raiders were willing to assume all of Darrelle Revis' existing contract with Tampa, and trade for him before he hit the open market, paying him $16M a season happily and not having to come up with a huge upfront payment or signing bonus or anything like that.

It was exactly the kind of scenario the team -- far below the NFL's projected spending threshold from 2013-2016 required under this collective bargaining agreement -- needed, a veteran player who would never come to the perpetually rebuilding franchise in the first place, available via trade at a high yearly salary. Only Revis's camp quickly persuaded Oakland GM Reggie McKenzie that the All Pro corner would not report to the team -- Revis's willingness to hold out and walk away from a deal should never be underestimated -- and thus things were quickly scuttled.

Who wants to play for maybe the worst franchise in the NFL? Since appearing in the Super Bowl in 2002 the Raiders have compiled a 56 - 136 record. On top of that paying the 12.30% marginal tax rate, playing in the worst stadium in the NFL, and a dysfunctional front office.

Wait a cotton-pickin' minute! Sure your Raiders are terrible ... but that isn't enough for you to claim all these honors.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the worst NFL team ... and the Tampons are proud of it! Watch your mouth, boy!

But but the Bucs won the SB when they went head to head against Da Raiders. So that makes the Bucs a slot ahead of Da Raiders. Let us not forget the Browns.

Ah yes, the joys of life at the bottom!

But wait one, don't the Buccaneers have more arrests per team than anyone else, including the Raiders, and Browns?

Worse in what manner? Can you think of any stadium where once you sit then stand up, an ice pick is sticking out of your stomach?

The Browns are SO BAD, none of their fans will even come here to claim their true prize.

Give Tebow a shot. Can’t be worse than what they have.

Yo, we're talkin' sports here, not lifestyle choices.

Actually they probably shouldn’t spend. Dumping big cash on free agents usually cripples a team. Just look at the Phins, they threw all that cash to Suh and immediately couldn’t afford Starks and their defensive line won’t have the 1-2 punch they wanted.

LOL. Being part of the Raider Nation. A lifestyle choice. Ouch. You see those spiked collars?

Da Raiders have a ton of cap room. After this fiasco, they might have the situation of not spending the league minimum.

They need a high-profile PR campaign to remind all potential recruits out there that “Al Davis is DEAD!!!”

The new season is young. There will be plenty of people to get and plenty of ways to spend money smartly. The successful teams rarely make splashy free agency moves, almost everybody that signs in the first week is over priced.

Norm, we really don't have a dog in this fight.

However, I assure you I am working night and day to bring an NFL team to Livermore Falls. Soon we will no longer have to drive Foxboro and contend with those Massholes!

Naturally, we don't have a large budget. My plan is that we create an NFL team entirely with players just getting paroled or having served their whole sentence. They should be meaner than a hungry bobcat with piles!

Let us not forget the Browns.

But the Browns have Kevin Costner as their GM and pulled off that monster series of draft day trades that landed them...oh wait.

I left out Cleveland because I didn’t want to tip off my plan to recruit Browns players for Livermore Falls who were disabled, or just gettin’ outa the joint!
