"It frustrates me that so many of my peers and professors have reacted so negatively. "I did not grow up around guns. "In fact, I was raised by a single mother who despised guns, in Carrollton, Texas, a relatively peaceful suburb of Dallas. "In grad school, my views evolved. I began to learn more about the prevalence of campus sexual assault in America, and I would sometimes leave class at 10 p.m., only to later hear about an assault on campus that night. I was sick of feeling like a potential victim. I had always been an advocate for providing...

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas will allow concealed handgun license holders to carry their weapons into public university buildings, classrooms and dorms starting Monday, which is also the 50th anniversary of the mass shooting at the University of Texas' landmark clock tower. The campus-carry law pushed by Gov. Greg Abbott and the Republican legislative majority will make Texas one of a handful of states that guarantee the right to carry concealed handguns on campus. Here's a Q &A on how the law will work:

The University of Houston's Student Government Vice President has been sanctioned following a social media controversy. Vice President Rohini Sethi's five sanctions include a 50-day suspension beginning Aug. 1, mandatory attendance of the Libra Project diversity workshop, mandatory attendance of three cultural events per month, a reflection letter and a public presentation in the Senate Meeting on Sep. 28. The Student Government President Shane Smith was given a one-time power to determine Sethi's suspension by the Student Senate. It was passed with 13 votes of approval, two against and one abstaining. He released the letter below. Between the Senate Meeting...

Despite the group's distinct demon-themed materials, including a promotional video for its school program that rivals The Blair Witch Project in creepiness, the group says it is not about worshiping Satan but spreading 'a scientific, rationalist, non-superstitious worldview' and doing away with the Christian 'preoccupation with sin, fear of Hell, and aversion to critical thinking.' The group does not believe in supernatural beings of any kind. According to the temple, Satan is merely a construct meant to overturn superstition and tyranny of the human mind. Video at link 1:06

The class was part of a Temple University program called Fighting Chance, which takes a practical - if startling- approach to helping save lives in crime-addled areas by training residents how to triage the victims of shootings and other violent crimes before an ambulance arrives. Before Fighting Chance even launched, the Obama administration announced a similar effort, Stop the Bleed, in the fall.

It’s a hot summer night, and leaders of the Satanic Temple have gathered in the crimson-walled living room of a Victorian manse in this city renowned for its witch trials in the 17th century. They’re watching a sepia-toned video, in which children dance around a maypole, a spider crawls across a clown’s face and eerie, ambient chanting gives way to a backward, demonic voice-over. The group chuckles with approval. They’re here plotting to bring their wisdom to the nation’s public elementary school children. They point out that Christian evangelical groups already have infiltrated the lives of America’s children through after-school...

The conflict between religious freedom and gay rights has a new battleground — California's religious colleges and universities. A bill moving through the Legislare would remove a longstanding exemption from anti-discrimination laws for religious institutions, potentially exposing the schools to civil rights lawsuits from students and employees.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M has suspended two assistant football coaches for two weeks for what they described as a "failed attempt at humor" this week at a football clinic for women. Coach Kevin Sumlin announced Friday night that offensive line coach Jim Turner and special teams coordinator Jeff Banks have been suspended without pay and will have to serve 20 hours of community service.

Schools in St. Paul, Minnesota, are out for the summer, and kids are basking in the rare Minnesota sun. As families head to the lake, there’s an overwhelming sense of relief that school is over. But this is not the usual end-of-school rejoicing, for it hasn’t been an ordinary year in St. Paul. Just days after the last school bell rang, a dramatic uprising of teachers, parents, and school board members ousted Superintendent Valeria Silva.

The battle over Michigan State University’s women-only lounge began with a rival school’s male professor. Mark Perry, who teaches economics at the University of Michigan’s Flint campus, had stumbled upon a news story about the 91-year-old room in MSU’s sprawling student union. “They’d written about what a great space this is for women,” Perry said. “They can go in and take a nap and not be worried about being bothered.” He figured it couldn’t be legal. Banning men from a taxpayer-funded study area, Perry thought, could violate Title IX, a federal law meant to protect gender equality on college campuses....

“Sesame Street” is brought to you today by the letters F-I-R-E-D. Three beloved human characters from the 45-year-old children’s show have been given the Sesame Sweep. Bob the music teacher, Gordon the science teacher and Luis the “Mr. Fix-It,” played by Bob McGrath, Roscoe Orman and Emilio Delgado respectively, have all been axed. “They let all of the original cast members go, with the exception of Alan Muraoka — who is probably 20 years younger than the rest of us — and Chris Knowings, who is also young,” McGrath, 84, said at a Florida Supercon Q&A on July 2.

How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have a thankless union boss. Mayor Bill de Blasio probably would agree, after United Federation of Teachers honcho Mike Mulgrew brutalized the administration’s latest effort to replace sound classroom practices with race-baiting political correctness. Last week, de Blasio declared an outright ban on classroom suspensions in kindergarten through second grade. Mulgrew might have been more supportive of de Blasio’s plan to punt on classroom discipline. After all, didn’t the mayor gift the UFT a $9-billion-plus contract settlement right after he took office? But that would miss the whole point of unions:...

"If there are any little girls out there who stayed up late to watch, let me just say: I may become the first woman president, but one of you is next," Hillary Clinton told the Democratic National Convention audience via satellite Tuesday night. This remark, said in a tone one might use to talk to babies, was the cherry on top of a slate of speakers who lauded Clinton’s landmark accomplishment as the country’s first female presidential nominee of a major party. The word “historic” was on everyone’s lips as Democrats claimed moral superiority for their support of a woman...

Mainstream now means teaching LGBT to second-graders. On July 14 the California board of education added LGBT mandates to the state’s new K-12 social studies program, revised for the first time in ten years. This ended a long struggle over school-based Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender studies, playing out for decades inside and outside the state. The San Francisco Chronicle called the event “a landmark move that puts the ongoing LGBT civil rights fight into the mainstream of public education.” The newly adopted state curriculum is “not only acknowledging diversity,” commented state superintendent of public instruction Tom Torlakson with customary...

A new video series is aimed at indoctrinating preschoolers with the LGBT message — a strategy that one pro-family activist says is far from new. The series, titled "Queer Kids Stuff" teaches preschoolers what the terms "gay," "bisexual" and "transgender" mean in an attempt to normalize the LGBT lifestyle with youth at an early age — a tactic that has repeatedly been used over the years to influence impressionable children. Advocates of homosexual behavior admit that they are trying to get to the youngsters before they hear anything negative about homosexuality. MassResistance founder and director Brian Camenker expresses concern that...

Leaked emails in the recent Democratic National Committee (DNC) Wikileaks hack reveal that DNC officials view Common Core as a political “third rail” and want party members to avoid talking about it. Well, sometimes, at least. The remarks were made by DNC deputy communications director Eric Walker while discussing a planned video that would denounced the GOP as hostile to teachers. Walker was highly critical of a part of the video that would mention Common Core, and said it had to go at all costs. “Common Core is a political third rail that we should not be touching at all....

One of the frontlines in the jihadi campaign to destroy America is on our college campuses, where jihadi front groups find a congenial home protected by left-wing academics, and with a vulnerable population of young Jews to attack. Antisemitic incidents on campus doubled in 2015 – including 56 violent assaults - and doubled again in 2016.

(Editors’ note: This column is co-authored by Chris MacFarland)New, robust partnerships between the public and private sectors are needed today to attract and educate the young scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians for tomorrow.A stem is the main trunk of a plant, and STEM — short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics — is the main trunk of our economy.A plant that gets too little water will fail to grow. Unfortunately, that’s also what’s happening to STEM education in our country today. We’re simply failing to attract and educate a sufficient number of young scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. Demand for these...

The date is 1900. Professor John Dewey and his cadre of "Progressives" launch an ambitious scheme to transform the country. They want a more collectivist society. For convenience, let's call their goal European Socialism. However, the United States is hostile to Socialism and Communism for another hundred years. Beatrice Webb, founder of the Fabian Society in London, decrees that the word "Socialism" shouldn't be used in America. The recommended euphemism is "Progressivism" and, later on, Liberalism. Socialism, as that term is generally understood, is what Dewey plans for us, but he can't say it. He and his gang must dissemble...

Professors are at it again, demonstrating in public how little they understand the responsibilities and limits of their profession. On Monday a group calling itself Historians Against Trump published an “Open Letter to the American People.” The purpose of the letter, the historians tell us, is to warn against “Donald J. Trump’s candidacy and the exceptional challenges it poses to civil society.” They suggest that they are uniquely qualified to issue this warning because they “have a professional obligation as historians to share an understanding of the past upon which a better future may be built.” Or in other words:...
