Travelers may have to take a trip to the DMV if they’re looking to fly, even domestically, after October 1, 2020. Thousands of individuals registered to vote in New Hampshire on Election Day Nov. 8 using out-of-state driver’s licenses and since then, the vast majority have neither obtained an in-state license nor registered a motor vehicle.

As the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) slowly implements the REAL ID Act of 2005, ID standards will change at airports around the country. This month, the government will expand its outreach program to spread information to travelers about the change. Effective Jan. 22, 2018, the DHS will no longer accept state-issued IDs from half the country. Travelers from “noncompliant” states will need to show an alternative form of ID, such as a passport, when boarding a plane.

Currently, Texas residents must opt in to be placed on the donor registry during their driver’s license process. HB 1938 would instead automatically place all adults on the driver’s license process on the registry, unless they opt out. Under this bill, each applicant will have to answer the question, “Would you like to refuse to join the organ donor registry?” Applicants who answer no or simply don’t answer will automatically be enrolled.

On the day that California officials implemented a controversial law that allows undocumented residents to obtain driver’s licenses, DMV offices throughout the state were packed with immigrants looking to take advantage of the opportunity. A recent Oregon law that automatically registers residents to vote when they get or renew a driver’s license has fueled a surge in newly minted voters. The information on your driver’s license is a gold mine and Pennsylvania is cashing in. The NBC10 Investigators found the state has earned more than $157 million since 2010 selling driver records. An NBC10 analysis of the more than 32,000 private companies and government agencies to which PennDOT sold driver information, traced it to every state in the country. The companies include credit agencies, insurance companies and car dealerships. The information PennDOT sold includes names, addresses, and driving histories.
