The States Where a Driver's License Won't Work for Air Travel Next Year

As the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) slowly implements the REAL ID Act of 2005, ID standards will change at airports around the country. This month, the government will expand its outreach program to spread information to travelers about the change.

Effective Jan. 22, 2018, the DHS will no longer accept state-issued IDs from half the country. Travelers from “noncompliant” states will need to show an alternative form of ID, such as a passport, when boarding a plane.

Many states allow illegals to get a drivers’ license.

This is to crack-down on states that issue DLs to illegals.

States should capture the applicant’s image at the beginning of the licensing process when the applicant submits a completed application to a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) representative for processing. If at any time during the application process fraud is suspected, the DMV should make every attempt to capture the applicant’s image whether or not a completed application is submitted for processing.

Before anyone asks, California will have fully compliant licenses available on January 2, 2018 for purchase at your DMV and the extension on using your current license runs until October of 2020.
You will need to provide proof of date of birth and two pieces of proof of California residency.

In Montana the legislature, and the majority of voters, just didn’t want to climb on the national I.D. bandwagon.

The legislature wanted to adapt the state license in such a way as to provide info and safety assurances, but the feds didn’t approve and I think it just died.

No sympathy. Too bad for residents of these states. They’ve had how many years, plus federal funds made available, to get these done? The lagging states have screwed their citizens, not the federal government.

I understand, but from my understanding, the state issued DL was in no way a national ID, but a document issued by the states, and each state set their own standards for the DL. . .this ensured each state that issued their own DL must have safeguards in place to protect the integrity of the DL. The DL was acceptable to all places in the state, but for federal standards, not.

Passports and such are, in a way, a national ID, whereas, a DL is a state issued ID.

Cheers, early morning tomorrow so signing off for now.

What is missing from the article is that the missing states were simply asked to verify each person--passport, birth certificate, or something to verify they are US citizens and so forth. Too bad they opted to not do so.

Here is what Nevada, as on example required:

See more specific details here: http://www.dmvnv.com/realid.htm

Again, not a big deal.

I can recall participating in threads on Free Republic from around 10 years ago where the REAL ID stuff (I think Congress passed it in 2006) was about the move towards a national/federal ID to replace all state IDs, and that it was about fighting the eternal enemy - terrorism.

Funny how it went from an ominous federal-only ID combatting terrorism to a way to deal with illegals.

I somehow don't think the underlying reasons/causes for REAL ID's goals have been replaced. I think they are just trying to make it more palatable to more people. And to be frank, it's worked, simply by forcing states to adopt it into their own IDs. I give it another 15 years before we lose state IDs altogether..

But voting without ID is okay - Chicago come to mind? Fourteen thousand more votes than voters.

The federal government forcing the supposed sovereign states to issue driver’s licenses acceptable to the feds yet allows many cities to be “sanctuary cities” which ignore federal immigration laws. Sick.

We’ve lost the battle.

I quit caring when I realized that both parties want the same thing. Complete and utter knowledge of everything we do....to then be used to control us further.

I have a passport and I very rarely fly, so it doesn’t affect me if KY doesn’t come around (it will).

The next step down the slippery slope will be ID to pass from state to state. Which has already been suggested by the jackboots at “Homeland Security”. Why don’t they just call it The Motherland and be done with it

It is when you're trying to get a copy of a divorce decree from 50 years ago when there was a flood in the town and the officials lost everything. Women have to prove name changes with all marriage licenses and divorce decrees.
