Wildlife experts say the number of dogs attacked by wolves is up TOWN OF BREED, Wis. - Wildlife experts say wolves have killed or seriously injured six dogs in Wisconsin this month. That's double the highest number for January in recent years. Two dogs have been killed in Oconto County. Department of Natural Resources wildlife supervisor Jeff Pritzl says the spike in incidents doesn't necessarily reflect any changes wolf population or behavior. Pritzl told WLUK-TV that more people are out hunting coyotes, bobcats, and rabbits with their dogs because of the milder winter. Pritzl said the peak time for wolf-related...

So why are Labrador retrievers, Jack Russell terriers, and Staffordshire bull terriers the leading breeds? The popularity of these dogs is down to the fact they are "wonderfully loyal, easily-trained breeds, suitable for single owners, couples or families", said Kennel Club secretary Caroline Kisko. But the dog map shows while Labradors are more popular in rural areas, it is Staffies that are favoured in big cities. "Labradors are very popular working dogs and are equally as happy spending a day out in the field or in the woods as they are curled up on the sofa with their family," said...

Hi all! I have a 5 month old puppy. He is (I was told) 1/2 German Shepard + 1/2 Rottweiler. He is also astonishingly intelligent, very easy to train, great memory. Anyway, he already knows sit, stay, come, lay, play dead, and fetch. On his 5 month birthday he weighed exactly 40 pounds. Here are my questions:If he is 40 pounds at exactly five months, what will likely be his weight when fully grown?I would like recommendations on what other commands would be useful? I am already planning to teach him to heel. He learns so quickly that I think...

A Native American man found dead in a New Mexico field last week near the Navajo Nation reservation may have been mauled by a pack of as many as 10 dogs, police said on Monday. Gallup Police Department spokesman Rick White said the man, who did not have identification on him but appeared to be in his mid-40s, was found by a passer-by. “We do not have a definitive cause of death yet but it appears he was attacked by dogs,” White said, although he could not give a precise cause of death. “There definitely were defense wounds from dog...

Yesterday, Governor Palin shared a seemingly benign "happy new year" Facebook post that included photos of her son Trig using their dog, Jill Hadassa, as a footstool of sorts. True to form, the media and the Left (pardon the redundancy) jumped at the opportunity to express their outrage. Animal rights groups also made their disapproval of the photos known as well, per POLITICO: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals called the post inappropriate.“It’s odd that anyone — let alone a mother — would find it appropriate to post such a thing, with no apparent sympathy for the dog in the photo,” PETA President Ingrid...

Last weekend in Saanich, B.C., a 16-day old baby was mauled by her family’s pit bull-Rottweiler mix on the same day as an elderly man was attacked by two pit bull dogs outside a Langley, B.C. dollar store ... there are about three million pit bull type dogs in North America today, representing 6% of all breeds. But about 26 people die from pit bull type dogs in the U.S. every year (out of about 40 from all 400 breeds combined). Pit bull type dogs maul, maim, disfigure or dismember hundreds more. By no coincidence, when pit bulls were few...

Man walks into a Catholic church and asks the priest if he will do a funeral for his dog. Looking dazed the priest says "sir absolutely not, this is a Catholic church, we don't do funerals for animals. Go down to the protestant church, I'm sure they do a lovely funeral for your dog". two-year-old Gabrielle Looney was bitten on the face by her mother’s boyfriend’s pit bull. The couple took the injured little girl to the hospital, where her mother did the unthinkable. She lied to doctors and police about what happened to protect the dog. “She tried to say that this injury to her child occurred from a stray,” Des Moines Police Sergeant Jim Butler to WHO-TV. “And that’s not something that sits too well for me. First and foremost we all love our pets but we have to take care of our children first before the family pet.” The dog, a...

Oregon police dog ‘Cash’ fired for poor performance A Belgian Malinois trained to be the ninth member of a Cannon Beach, Oregon, police force has been given the boot, evidently unfit for the field of law enforcement. Two-year-old “Cash” was dismissed before he even got to see action, The Associated Press reported. Among his many faults: He was afraid of heights. He had barking difficulties. And he startled at the slightest of noises, AP reported. On top of that, he couldn’t perform one of his key roles — jumping into high spots, like counters, to sniff out drugs. Instead, he’d...
