So why are Labrador retrievers, Jack Russell terriers, and Staffordshire bull terriers the leading breeds?

The popularity of these dogs is down to the fact they are "wonderfully loyal, easily-trained breeds, suitable for single owners, couples or families", said Kennel Club secretary Caroline Kisko.

But the dog map shows while Labradors are more popular in rural areas, it is Staffies that are favoured in big cities.

"Labradors are very popular working dogs and are equally as happy spending a day out in the field or in the woods as they are curled up on the sofa with their family," said Ms Kisko.

I bet they have done it as well in the States.

Of interest from the UK is that Staffies are a hit in urban areas whilst in the country, Labradors are favored.

I live in a US rural area and I'm a proud owner of a German Shepherd.

Our neighbors have the cutest little light brown and white miniature bulldog. She’s a sweetheart, always wants to come over and say hi.

We have 3 JRT’s and have had 10 or 12 in the last 20 years, half of them rescues. We love these little guys.

Two of ours are rough coated and one is the typical short haired Jack. One of the rough coated Jacks has really long hair and is a throw back to long haired terriers that were bred into the line who knows how long ago. He is a therapy dog and we go to hospitals and convalescent homes on a regular basis. he is the sweetest dog I have ever had.

Bowser is super friendly too. The vet says she would love to see more of his temperament in the breed.

Mine don’t but I suspect they would be fine if they started out with cats from a young age.

Get them as a puppy and you’ll have no problem. While rescuing Jack’s is a noble thing bring an adult in could be a problem. I’ve got a Jack Russell a Lab and cats.
