The divisions within the Bay Area’s Catholic community over gay rights hit Marin Catholic High School full force the other day, when a group of nuns walked out of their classes to protest the sponsors of a program intended to protect gay and lesbian teens from bullying. The five members of the Dominican Sisters of Mary order exited their classrooms Friday as students began handing out flyers at the Kentfield school promoting a nationwide Day of Silence.

There's an understandable tendency not to take Donny Deutsch too seriously. He can come across not as a credible political analyst but as a guy more interested in his abs and biceps and the next lady at the next Hamptons cocktail party. But let's give Donny his due: as an ad man, he at times offers interesting insights on politics seen in terms of brands and marketing. He also serves as a credible bellwether for a certain segment of the East Coast Dem donor class. And so it was noteworthy that on today's Morning Joe, Deutsch declared that the string...

Though Wal-Mart remains fixed in the American conscience as Sam Walton's business, it is less and less that. Walton was folksy and relatable to the Americans who shopped at Wal-Mart. Everyone could imagine Sam Walton shopping there, too. But over the years, Wal-Mart's management has passed out of the direct hands of Walton's family. A few of the Walton clan remain on the Wal-Mart board of directors, but now its board also includes Marissa Mayer, the CEO of Yahoo!, and Kevin Systrom, the CEO of Instagram. One would be hard pressed to imagine either as regular shoppers at Wal-Mart. For...

House Speaker John Boehner called for the Obama administration to provide "all the facts" in the U.S. drone strike that accidentally killed an American and Italian hostage held at an al Qaeda compound. Boehner, R-Ohio, said he also expects House committees to look into the incident. "As President Obama indicated, this is not a time for excuses," Boehner said after offering condolences to the families of American Warren Weinstein and Giovanni Lo Porto, an Italian citizen. "The president announced an independent review is under way and that is entirely proper," Boehner said. "We need all the facts for the families,...

Today, April 24, we remember how exactly 100 years ago the last historic Muslim caliphate, the Ottoman Empire, tried to cleanse its empire of Christian minorities — Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks — even as we stand by watching as the new caliphate, the Islamic State, resumes the genocide. And in both cases, the atrocities were and are being committed in the name of Islam. In November, 1914, during WWI, the Ottoman caliphate issued a fatwa, or Islamic decree, proclaiming it a “sacred duty” for all Muslims to “massacre” infidels — specifically naming the “Christian men” of the Triple Entente, “the enemies of...

A Texas police officer was following protocol Tuesday when he was caught on video throwing a drunk woman to the ground, knocking her unconscious, his police chief said. On cell phone video, a witness captured Round Rock Officer Ben Johnson slamming the woman to the ground in front of her 6-year-old daughter in a strip mall parking lot. Viviana Keith, who was allegedly resisting arrest, hit her head on the pavement and was knocked out, KVUE reported Thursday. Keith's mother and some witnesses to the incident have accused Johnson of using excessive force. But according to KVUE, Round Rock Police...

A series of pro-life banners of images of 11-week-old fetuses in the womb saw mere hours of daylight at the University of Southern California on Tuesday prior to being removed by the same university organization that had initially approved them. The light poles instead featured hand-written signs posted on them reading, “Women deserve the right to choose.” “It is unbelievable that USC removed all the posters that were put up around the school,” USC College Republicans member Jacob Ellenhorn told The College Fix. He noted that the banners went through the proper channels to obtain approval.  -snip Monique Allard, USC’s assistant provost for student engagement, responded to...

Twice did Bruce Jenner win gold medals for the decathlon. In 1975 at the Pan Am Games in Mexico City, then again in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Jenner bested the world and broke some world records in the process. After the Olympics, Jenner found himself on the Wheaties box. He appeared in film and television. He took up car racing. His name and image made him money. Married and divorced three times, his last marriage was to Kris Jenner, which put him back on television keeping up with a bunch of overexposed Kardashians. He also fathered six children along the...

MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) — The president of the Muncie chapter of the NAACP sold cocaine to a confidential informant on several occasions, according to investigators. On one occasion, he is accused of trying to solicit sex for drugs. Documents stated that Miles gave a full confession when he was arrested. This NYT story, an obvious attempt at a gotcha that’ll damage Cruz among his base, will do more damage to the two businessmen within their own circle of allies, I suspect. It’s one thing for Ted Cruz, social conservative, to socialize with gay friends. It’s another for gays to socialize with — gasp — Ted Cruz, social conservative. During the gathering, according to two attendees, Mr. Cruz said he would have no problem if one of his daughters was gay. He did not mention his opposition to same-sex marriage, saying only that marriage is an issue that should be...

A response to Rod Dreher’s “Benedict Option”An atmosphere of gloom and despair pervades some cultural-conservative circles, and, at first glance, it’s easy to understand why. There’s no question that hysterical public assaults on Christians or others who dissent from leftist sexual orthodoxy are increasing in volume and frequency. It seems as if every day there’s a new story of an attempt to silence, intimidate, or publicly shame social conservatives. It’s not enough to express disagreement with cultural conservatives — they must lose their jobs, lose their businesses, and close their schools, unless they bend the knee to the sexual revolution....

Animal Services' officials received a call on Thursday morning that Nahla had been found in the San Ysidro area; the residents there said they found the dog as a stray in the area. Hernando Quandt and his wife, Vivian, were reunited with Nahla at Thursday afternoon at the San Diego County Animal Shelter in Bonita. Nahla appeared overjoyed to be reunited...
  • Jury In Etan Patz Murder Asks For Computer With Excel To Organize Thoughts

The jury in the Etan Patz murder trial went through a seventh day of deliberations Thursday. Pedro Hernandez, 54, confessed to killing the 6-year-old boy in May 1979. He said he lured Patz into a bodega basement and strangled him. The defense, however, says Hernandez is mentally ill and made up the story. The jury asked for a computer with Excel Thursday to create a spreadsheet to organize its thoughts, WCBS 880’s Irene Cornell reported. The judge granted the request joked he’ll say no if they ask for a coffee maker. Jurors were dismissed for the day around 4:45 p.m.,...

The book isn’t even out yet, and Clinton’s team is already sheltering in place like Churchill’s cabinet during the Blitz. That’s in part because Schweizer, a conservative author and dogged investigative journalist, has teamed up with notorious right-wing rags The New York Times and The Washington Post to essentially re-report and expand on allegations made in the book. Because it would be absurd to claim these papers are part of the “vast right-wing conspiracy” — which won’t stop flacks from saying it — they’re better equipped to drop the payload over the target. Even Lawrence O’Donnell, a Democratic water-carrier of...
